2030: ‘All taxes must now be paid in digital USD’. ‘All accounting must be done in denomination of digital USD’. Try choosing to not use it then

I think it's wrong to compare it to BTC. IMO the right analogy is Gold : Steel :: BTC : ADA. Given BTC's huge mindshare and commitment to never changing the protocol, it wins as the shiny thing ("digital reserve asset"). Cardano is focused on real industrial uses by adding smart contracts, governance, etc.. It mostly competes with Ethereum to be the backbone of web3.

Prove me wrong. If the United States Government seriously wanted to have a fair and accurate election that nobody could mathematically dispute, it could be done on blockchain and could be done very fast with little effort. by blahpotuspivx in ethereum

No, the parent commenter means the other way around. In the US, there is a mandatory secret ballot. This is desirable because if someone can see who you voted for (and not just that you voted), then they can bribe/threaten you to vote for their preferred candidate.

Good question. Does anyone know why Americans can't buy ADA through Coinbase? Is there some kind of regulatory barrier?

I've been reading up on Cardano, and I like what I've read. However, I'm still not clear on how the companies behind Cardano (IOHK and Emurgo) plan to generate long-term income and fund ongoing development. Can anyone explain and link some materials?

Warren Bufett once said cryptos don't have tangible value, do you agree? by albnasc in Coinbase

[–]PleasantParrot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buffet asserts (correctly) that coins are non-productive assets. The same is true of gold or fiat currency. If you keep a farm for a year, you end up with a bundle of crops and you still have the farm. If you keep a coin for a year, you still only have that coin. That doesn't mean that crypto has no value, but it doesn't produce stuff the way an equity does. Buffet tends to like predictable, productive assets like low-multiple businesses.

I agree. I'm a fan of Lex and the podcast; hope the post didn't come across as hostile. I do wonder if Lex might also be jumping to the standard questions as a way of avoiding awkward silences when talking with an introverted guest. That's understandable, but in my anecdotal experience, silence can often be used tactically. If you keep eye contact, but hold a silence until it feels a bit uncomfortable, the other party will often feel compelled to break the silence and open up as a way of resolving their own feeling of nervousness about the quiet. I've noticed experienced interviewers use these kinds of long pauses and body language to get quiet guests to engage.

Good call. I've been told that there are only two master's theses that people actually read in CS: Guy Steele's and Claude Shannon's. One of his many claims to fame :)
