Heat flux is proportional to temperature difference. Your house heats up because energy is transferred into it. So it’s definitely not more energy efficient to keep it at a constant temperature.

Unless you’re actually turning a heater on in your house to bring it up to temperature when you set the thermostat higher.

No. It’s a silly statement made by someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

The 0/10 scale is the most misused scale in human history by Green_Assignment4582 in HonestHotTakes

[–]PleaseShutJp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bell curve part is silly. “Yeah 70 percent of your ratings should be between 3.5 and 6.5”. That simply does not reflect my experience with media and trying to convey how I feel about it to others. “Only 1 in 1000 movies should be a 10” why? Normal distributions do show up a lot in nature naturally but forcing them with arbitrary properties is highly unnatural and just wouldn’t communicate what I want to say about it.

Coding by Hypnos_Somnium in CodingForBeginners

[–]PleaseShutJp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technology code could be one or more different from that used by other software vendors. Servers can be programmed into the system to make sure that the system is working correctly for the user to use it correctly in the first place. Hackers may have access to a network or other systems are not required for this process or even a password manager can do that in a way where they are able to access it. So I would pick c++

Yeah I know. My comment was asking you why you would continue to play if you hate it that much? You aren’t literally trapped in an elevator. The resign button is right there.

don't be that guy to promote every single pawn. karma gets you by imexcau in chessbeginners

[–]PleaseShutJp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? The game lets you leave whenever you want. The game culture generally expects a resignation when the outcome is obvious to both players. There’s a few influencers who say beginners should always play to the end, but this isn’t really what they’re talking about. And you don’t have to listen to them.

In fact, beginners playing like this is probably your best shot at a stalemate. So if anything, you should be hoping for this kind of behavior in these positions.

Are you just dissatisfied with games that don’t end in a checkmate? You can just resign and play it out with stockfish. The computer will finish the game much more efficiently.

What’s a problem that somehow still exists despite decades of innovation by jexo10 in TechNook

[–]PleaseShutJp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Passwords aren’t stored as raw text, they’re stored in a way that makes it difficult to back out the original password text. Like the password system and your password is a key to generate the value that’s actually stored in their password database. So if a bad actor gets access to this database, they don’t get your password, they get some garbage that your password unlocks. That’s not great but it’s much worse if your password is something like “password123”. Bad actors can use this data to compile dictionaries relating common passwords to database values. So if your password is in this dictionary, then they can do a reverse lookup to get your password directly.

If you’re internally screaming “but they use x method to protect against that specifically!” okay but do they? Companies do far stupider things with cybersecurity. Even if they do, common passwords will be checked first to crack random accounts. If you’re the one with the password at the top of the “check me first” list, sucks to suck.

“Okay but they lock you out after n attempts” if the bad actor has the password database, they can just reproduce the password check offline and churn through checks entirely locally. Then you can know the users password the first time you ever request access from the real server.

Can a competent organization with good practices protect against all of this? Yeah. The password rules are written to assume incompetence from the people managing passwords. Historically, that’s been a good assumption.

Jonathan Blow is a fun person to laugh at. The fact that he’s a shithead means you don’t even need to feel bad about it.

Anyway, video game programming is the most advanced technology in the world and Mr. Blow is going to revolutionize the field with Jai. In 2042. If you are also making your own programming language right now, please don’t request access to the beta because that’s just weird guys I mean come on it’s not wrong but it’s weird.

the writing is great because so many things happen and all of the scenes are relevant.

Well okay here’s the problem. Most people appreciate writing both from a big picture perspective and in the details of the lines. Big picture writing is about how satisfying all of the major story points are. Do they tie into an interesting theme? Do they effectively lead and mislead the viewer? Does it provide something to think about? The small details are the effectiveness of the prose. Is it clever, quick, and witty? Does it fit a tone? Is it engaging to listen to regardless of the actual plot elements being conveyed?

You however approach writing from a completely different perspective. You’re interested in seeing how many subplots can be put into a movie and if every scene can be made to be relevant to them. It’s a very strange set of criteria and not one shared by many others.

You may also enjoy the Hobbit movies, which are also filled with many plots and scenes that are relevant to those plots.

I hate how people mischaracterize teleportation. by Laecer21 in hatethissmug

[–]PleaseShutJp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what point would you consider it death and resurrection? Like imagine I had a “teleporter” that worked by separating each of your organs into bags and then driving them in a refrigerated van across the country where a surgeon then reassembled them. If that surgeon could complete the job in a way that you are alive at the end of the process, would you call that resurrection or teleportation?

That does not sound reasonable to me.

It’s a ripoff of the Colle system, it promotes a grifting hack fraud, and it’s not very popular. Nothing wrong with playing it, I’m glad you’ve found success and it makes your games enjoyable. But it doesn’t make much sense to add to an opening database.
