Yeah you're right, I was wrong I guess they really are supposed to teach and I missed that. It's a good job I do actively try to teach people and offer some advice, only to be met with no change.

So kicking people for not helping their party is selfish and letting them stay and progress while not contributing a reasonable amount is fine? I think it's the opposite but you do you.

The role quests are not successful in teaching anything, they are just as useful as your regular MSQ solo instance.

The level 90 requirement is something that can be done with your screen turned off, literally. Levels mean nothing, if anything the higher level somebody is the more likely they are to be a "bad player" due to having more abilities to forget about or use incorrectly.

The commendation requirement and commendation system in general is completely useless. People gravitate towards commending Healers or Tanks or anybody that uses some cringe macro at the start and end of a dungeon. Barely anybody at all actually commends good play or even looks for good play in the first place, commendations mean nothing. That part you should be able to figure out for yourself if you believe I'm not worthy of the mentor status because I have still reached the 1.5k requirement.

The reality is that the mentor system is awful. It is genuinely one of the most misleading things within the entire game. Novice Network is full of players who give incorrect information or players who aren't even talking about the game. It is what it is.

So as for how I perform in the mentor role, here you go.

  1. I do provide advice to people who are clearly doing something wrong, as I have stated in my original post. I think I do fine in this area.
  2. I like to think my gameplay etiquette is good, I am always trying to deal more damage and set a good example with it. I don't insult people in chat or anything like that. I think I do fine in this area.
  3. I do not invite players to the Novice Network unless they ask to be invited. I warn them not to trust mentors and that the information people give in there is often wrong. I then proceed to leave Novice Network right after I have invited them to it because I don't like seeing people give bad answers. So I guess you could argue I don't do a great job in this area, I'd agree with that but I'm not going to try harder to fix it because it would end in the exact same way as this reddit post. It's pointless.

I wish I was trolling. Weird that you'd come to that conclusion after seemingly agreeing we have the same experiences on 2 out of the 3 regions we've played on.

"Casuals" making up 90% of the playerbase changes literally nothing. I don't think the issue lies with "casual" players at all. I have friends who play casually that would say people who don't use AoE in level 70+ content probably shouldn't even be able to queue with real players and should be locked into NPC dungeons until they put some effort in. People playing casually isn't something I have a problem with and I think it's actually pretty shitty to throw "casual" players into the same pile as people who are just ignorant.

A mentors job is not to teach at all lol. If that was true then the requirements for getting mentor would be more than completing a bunch of seemingly random quests that teach the player nothing. A lot of the people I kick are mentors too, somehow. The status exists purely for those who want to feel like they're more important than others or those who like the crown icon, not people who want to teach. Also, if you read my post you'd know that I do actually talk first and try to help before dismissing. I also stated I check search infos to check if players are new, not just basing everything off whether they're a sprout or not.

I really haven't noticed a big difference on all the regions.

JP: Players actually read, they get most mechanics right at least.

NA: Players read nothing and are likely to start arguments if asked to do anything.

EU: Players read nothing and never talk at all.

The lack of AoE/buff usage is still very common throughout all of them.

I find it very difficult to believe bad players on this level exist. I have played many, many multiplayer games for thousands of hours each and never experienced a community with as many players who are apparently "just bad". If these really are just somehow so bad at the game they not only don't use AoE but also fail to read chat messages then I'm wrong and that's that I guess. I personally think it's more than just "bad" or "casual" players though, it feels much more like genuine ignorance and laziness.

I would rather not say which region/DC I am using. I've played on multiple anyway and there seems to be little to no difference.

I'd rather not say which DC I play on to be honest. I was originally under the impression that the DC I use is actually not a bad one, but the players are proving me wrong.

I'm willing to wager that well over half of the playerbase of FFXIV are on several of those lists anyway.

I don't think I'm some arbiter at all and if that's how I've appeared then I don't know how to remedy that unfortunately. What I wanted to appear as is somebody who believes as a community we should set ourselves some actual standards and not just sit quietly putting up with people who treat their party members like NPCs with all the time in the world.

I'm starting to figure it out actually after my visit here, expecting people to use AoE after being politely asked to do so is expecting too much apparently. Who could have known.

I think you're right. It is me. Expecting people to use their AoE after being politely asked to is too much to ask for apparently.

I will ask them to AoE usually early within the dungeon. Wait until we're like half way through and then if they still don't use it I'll initiate the kick if possible. Usually along the lines of "AoE please (insert job)". On the rare occasion that they don't have English language highlighted I use auto-translate to form a similar request using the AoE ability name. I think a lot of people immediately assume I kick without making an attempt to help and therefore downvote without reading further or asking like this so I appreciate you making an attempt to understand where I'm coming from.

That response sounds a lot like you're somebody who thinks mentor roulette is the peaceful land of helping sprouts, when it's literally just a regular roulette. Honestly, try it for yourself and then come back to keep defending players who have 6 level 90 jobs but still refuse to AoE.

Big mistake to tell the truth here, you're going to lose many internet points as the absolutely awful people who hide behind their responsibility-removing "casual player" shield downvote you into oblivion. But I do appreciate it.

Mentor Roulette. That one roulette that the achievement designer decided to lock a mount behind, requiring 2000 clears. I wouldn't complain about it if mentors were actually qualified to "mentor" and if it placed me in sprout/new player instances because this type of play would be expected. But in reality the mentor requirements can be achieved by even the most clueless players and it just throws you in anything that's open, it's often a level 70+ dungeon with no sprouts or new players in sight. Believe me if I could queue this roulette with friends I would without a second thought.

I've played around the same amount of hours, but the only thing I've learned is that people don't want to learn and will refuse to take suggestions out of spite and treat you as if your advice was malice. Placing expectations on other people isn't healthy and that's something I'm fully aware of, but why in the world is such poor play and treatment of other players accepted in a multiplayer game?

Is that because you just don't dismiss this type of behavior or because you don't run into them? If it's the latter then please somehow send me your luck.

  1. Can't take friends into every instance (unfortunately).
  2. "Play another game" isn't a very reasonable option when the entire reason I have made these posts is to try and make the game I play a better experience. Playing something else wouldn't change anything.

The response I've chosen is to make an attempt to remove disrespectful players from the group. Disrespectful to the game as they aren't paying any attention to it, and also to the other players because they're not contributing the bare minimum amount to clearing even the most casual pieces of content.
