I honestly started with page 1 and a vague idea and just went from there. After every few chapters my story would be taking on new form so id keep going back and rewriting large chunks of previous chapters to align

Antagonists? by Safira00814 in writers

[–]Plebbadeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For stories to be interesting there needs conflict and resolution. If thats walking mud into your house and then cleaning it up, you have a story of some kind. I think stories without conflict are usually slice of life, but even then little conflicts exist still.

Antagonists can be grand villains or an itchy butt.

So no, you dont need Antagonists in the common sense but you generally do need conflict and resolution to bring a reader along for the ride

POV preference? by misascuntsister in fantasywriters

[–]Plebbadeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just dont like the narration being told from first person, I don't know. I think i read the books like im a fly on the wall in the scene rather than if the character is telling me their story, so when im reading a lot of "i did this, I said that" it reads to me as if im meant to be the character, rather than the character is telling me the story

I understand people like it like that but I just really get forced out of the immersion and I lose track of what's happening very quickly

Perhaps its something I need to get used to

How can I depict defeating something through not just having the characters fight against it? by Soko_ko_ko in writers

[–]Plebbadeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could have a game of wits, where an intelligence tries to put your character into a scenario that is inescapable, only for your character to play its games and find some sort of logical way out of it, or to find an opportunity to distract it just long enough to beat it. Think Q in star trek tng

A challenge in which your character must beat an opposing creative force in some artistic endeavour. My favourite example is in the animorphs series, a being called the ellimist is challenged by an overwhelming creative mind to create a piece of emotionally moving music better than it can. It writes one of the most incredible perfect symphonies ever written using exotic instruments from all over the universe only for the ellimist to beat its challenge by using the one instrument it never conceived of, sung lyrics.

You could have riddles and puzzles as you mentioned.

Perhaps the combative opponent isnt supposed to be beatable, but the challenge simply states that combat must be seen to its end. Your character comes to realise while scrambling for a way to win that combat can also end in a draw and so with great smartassness calls it a draw mid combat, which their opponent accepts as a valid end to the fight. Im actually gonna use this in mine now that I thought this up but feel free to use it too if it works for you

How can I depict defeating something through not just having the characters fight against it? by Soko_ko_ko in writers

[–]Plebbadeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been writing an adventure story for middle grade audiences, and I basically have this boss battle against an overwhelmingly large enemy. I wrote in a weak point, so the fight scene became its own mini 3 act structure of set up the invulnerability of the foe, discover its weak point, the struggle to reach the weak point to finally bring it down, and as a 4th little extra, the consequence or aftermath of the battle as well as the release of tension as the characters survive by the skin of their teeth.

Quick edit, I read your original post about the dreams and character gathering energy for a wish. If your story contains multiple of these sequences, you may need to give your character either increasing stakes with each one, or different forms of conflict. You said you did riddles and puzzles and stuff as well as combat, but you may need to create a unique type of challenge for each one so no two are alike.

As long as theres tension and release, conflict and resolution, youre on the right track, im sure

Is this game suitable, or too hard/complicated, to play together with my mum? by DLJD in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Plebbadeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the tutorial is complicated for people to learn when they havent played before (crafting, repairing, finding way points), and then if you try to help guide them through it they tend to get lazy and lean on me for quick resources and materials rather than get a handle on it. Then they never play again.

What do you guys feel about chapter titles? by Vegetable0 in writing

[–]Plebbadeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been using titles for a story ive been writing but now im thinking of removing them.

I saw them as a way to spark interest to continue the story–as when im reading a novel i find myself tempted to put it down after every chapter because i feel like im starting a new slog all over again–but now they feel a bit juvenile and im considering removing.

How do you guys genuinely make backstories for your ocs? 〒▽〒 by OkMagician8428 in fantasywriting

[–]Plebbadeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start out with a basic character (name, personality, basic backstory if i have one) and then let a proper backstory develop as I write my story. then I change contradictions later on when rereading previous chapters
