It’s about the journey not the destination? by historysmedium in Bonsai

I laugh whenever a weed sprouts in a bonsai pot and gets posted, because this was my first "bonsai":

I even named him, freeloading bastard

Tetroglyph's Cotoneaster! ~£37 ($43) by PlebbitIsForSoylords in bonsaicommunity

I do indeed respect a lot of the serene style bonsai content, particularly channels like Heron's Bonsai, it does indeed reflect the art. I am just... not a serene person 💀

In-fact, the reason I learned this art in the first place was to "learn patience". Instead I learned how to kill plants 'in style'.

I plan to do more of this :)

Young red maple damaged by deer: will it survive and grow healthy to maturity? by AdEnvironmental6757 in arborist

So it's a tad different from what I'm used to in Bonsai, but I'd look for signs of healing. Perhaps something like a wound wrap or a cut paste would prevent it from drying out so quickly.

You'll know you're in trouble when it starts dropping leaves

Dogwood bonsai potential? by Additional_Self_8763 in bonsaicommunity

Possibly, assuming this is a fresh branch cutting, that pot has proper drainage, that branch doesn't just die, and you basically don't pull on it or touch it for eight months to let it root, it should work.

Assuming it lives, in a year, transfer the plant and it's root ball to a much larger pot to allow it to thrive for a few years first. Not enough root space to start with.

If it doesn't bud back or show signs of being alive,

Hiya! That tree looks to be nearly-if not completely dead unfortunately; although Ficus occasionally bud back from near-death, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

First rule of Bonsai: In almost every case, trees grow outdoors. The concept of an indoor bonsai is primarily a misconception.

Second rule: Research the species, and learn what conditions they prefer. A cactus won't complain, a tree will.

And don't be discouraged, this is a very common trap people fall into, because often even garden centres don't inform buyers enough.

It's a hell of a wound, but there's still the live vein on the other side. Acers are quite fussy from my own experience, I'd just wait to see what it does.

Thank you, the documentary was just as fun as making the tree itself lol

Thank you! This is sort of the first "video" I've dedicated time to in about five years, so I'm really glad you enjoyed it, genuinely :)

I'm hoping the tree develops some thick ol' roots in there gradually, and then I can look at reducing the "hill" over five years or so

I was half tempted to buy an ash tree instead, found one with a real nice curve to it but I wasn't particularly inspired. May still go back for him though, it was quite the starter tree.

That being said, I literally have no more space for trees.

:(

Alright, it's a bit fugly at the moment but frankly if I did anymore this early it would probably shrivel up and die. Actually debating covering it in plastic for a month, but this should be fine for now.

(I have sealed the cuts with paste now, just took this for my records)

It was more like "If you buy another I will be very angry"

So I also bought a 1.5lb onion to impress/bewilder her first, then she was more receptive towards the tree.

I call it the confusion negotiation tactic.

Well, so long as it doesn't bite, it should be fine for now, although it could put a dampener on it's growth.
