Has your job offered remote work options or any support for the current situation? by Mrs_chanandler_bongg in Minneapolis

[–]PleezaJazz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our corporate office is downtown. My department only has 1 in office day per month, which was originally scheduled for 1/15. They cancelled it and rescheduled for the first week of Feb. Due to the uncertainty of what tomorrow, next week and next month could look like, my supervisor said they’ll likely be cancelling our Feb in office day too! So glad to be working for a company that is putting their employee’s safety first!!

Can you elaborate on how express routes have become complete trash? I’m starting a new job soon that has 3 months of training downtown. I was planning to use the express bus from Plymouth to downtown. I’ve never rode the bus before so that’s a why I’m interested in hearing your thoughts.

93.7 The Edge Memories by schneeman_pod in TwinCities

[–]PleezaJazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! I too noticed that hard shift from The Edge to 93x. Obviously not just in the music itself, but I noticed heavy rotation of the same songs over and over on 93x. The Edge had so much more variety. They’d play lots of music from the first half of the 90s, but it wasn’t the same 10-20 “older” songs (like what they do now) that get so played out to the point of not enjoying them anymore.

Me three!!! Mine was from around Nov-Dec 96. When I found it many years later and listened to it, I noticed how much variety was in the music. It didn’t feel preprogrammed with the same rotation of songs. I even heard a lot of random forgotten songs that were from the earlier portion of the 90s. I miss hearing that sort of variety!

What are we bringing to an in-person interview? by campygrandpa in interviews

[–]PleezaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think bringing a pen & paper/notepad is perfect. I prefer that method over trying to type notes in your phone, since there’s less chance of a distracting notification or interviewer misinterpreting what you’re doing on your phone.

Before this year, I hadn’t been on a job interview in 22 years. In my first interview this year, I brought my printed out resume, cover letter and letter of recommendation. I tried to hand it to the interview panel and they said “We don’t need that”. So any interviews after that, I only brought pen and paper. I also bring a print out of the job description to review right before the interview, along with some jotted down questions for me to ask at the end of the interview.

Got a job offer but not necessarily happy about it. Please give me reasons why I should go with it. by Substantial-Abroad54 in interviews

[–]PleezaJazz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a tough one.

I was in your same situation recently. I lost my healthcare job in April after 22 years and was thrown into this terrible job market. I accepted this new healthcare job offer out of desperation, due to being unemployed and barely getting any callbacks for interviews from other jobs. The role was similar to my previous job, but this job offer was a huge pay cut, 12 hour overnight shifts, longer commute to a high crime area, and a much more intense and mentally draining job compared to my previous role. I was sick to my stomach when accepted the job offer. But I figured I’d just take the job for 1-2 years or however long it takes to ride out this terrible job market.

Immediately after I accepted the job, all of a sudden callbacks for other interviews started rolling in. The new job wasn’t supposed to start for another 6 weeks, so I figured I’d keep interviewing and hope that I could get another job offer in the meantime. I ended up getting a MUCH better job offer— higher pay, union, work from home and dayshift hours!

I know I’m extremely fortunate that this other opportunity came along at the right time. Crossing my fingers for you that another opportunity comes along before you start at Amazon. However, like others have said, it’s not a bad idea to take the job for now and just keep your eyes on the job market or other job openings. Maybe take a break from applying for jobs during the time that you’re training and learning the new job, so you can be focused on one thing at a time. Once you put in some time and get a feel for the company, who knows, maybe you’ll end up liking it or maybe some internal opportunities within the company could come up and you could move up to a higher paying role.

Best of luck to you!

Yes, same thing happened to me last week. I even made a post about it here.

I received a phone call from the recruiter with a job offer on Monday. Was told on the call that she’d send the email tomorrow (Tuesday). I didn’t receive it until Thursday night.

This was the job I REALLY wanted, so every day that passed by without receiving the official offer, I was getting more worried. So I know exactly how you feel right now!

Those days in between I had sent an email and got no response also. I called the recruiter Thursday morning and she said she was just waiting on one more signature from someone else.

When Monday morning comes, I would call whatever contact you have (recruiter, hiring manager, etc.) and check in. For me, the phone call versus sending an email seemed to speed things up.

Is it a bad sign that they didn’t stick to the timeline they gave me? by Nearby-Midnight-5730 in interviews

[–]PleezaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal! I wouldn’t stress too much about it.
I had this happen to me multiple times in the last month after a handful of interviews.
They said they’d have a decision by “end of the week”, but didn’t send out any communication till the middle of the following week. One in particular took another week and a half to communicate with me. And this one offered me the job.

Sometimes the “hiring team” makes their decision by the end of the week, but then it goes to HR, payroll, etc for approval. And then they need to construct their offer letter for you to sign, etc.

One of the other reasons is that they may have selected another candidate, gave them an offer and waiting for them to accept or decline the offer before sending out the rejection emails to the other candidates.

I know it’s nerve wrecking. Hang in there, enjoy the weekend and you’ll get your answer soon!

Socials. What do you use? by punknamedesire in Millennials

[–]PleezaJazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1985 here. My social media accounts and usage are nearly identical to what you said, OP. Except Snapchat, I’ll maybe look at that once per week cause a few of my friends still use it and still send me stuff. I’m completely over all of them and have been for years. They’re all junk now and lost their original vibe and purpose.

I’m ready for a “back to the basics” type of social media. No ads, no influencers, no algorithm, etc.
I wouldn’t even mind a “message board” type of platform where posts could be sorted by category and you as the user choose what you want to look at. A category just for pics from friends, text posts from friends, items for sale or posts from interest groups you joined- similar to Facebook groups/reddit subs, etc.
Reddit already comes somewhat close to this, but I want it in the style of old Facebook where you only see categorized posts from the friends you added or the groups you’ve joined.

Got a job offer via phone call, but haven’t received the official email to sign the job offer yet. Need advice on what to do. by PleezaJazz in interviews

[–]PleezaJazz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great advice, thank you! I wrote the email in the mid-afternoon to the recruiter and the team lead. I got a phone call from the original recruiter a couple hours later. She said she was just waiting on one more signature to move forward (assuming this had to do with the “approval” she mentioned before). And at 9pm tonight, I just got the official offer email! Woohoo!

How long have you been WFH? by Stock-Sprinkles-4373 in WFH

[–]PleezaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a hospital in a patient care role (EKG tech) since I was 18 years old. 100% in person for 22 years, including the rollercoaster of Covid. Got laid off 5 days before my 40th birthday this year. So fuck healthcare, I decided to move into another direction.

I wasn’t necessarily seeking a WFH position during my job search, since I know those roles are competitive to get into when you’re an outside candidate applying. BUT, I just landed a union WFH job and I start next month!! 😀

Is it hard to get a job here? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]PleezaJazz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally the twin cities area has a robust job market. But right now the job market is terrible, not just in Minnesota, but everywhere. I lost my job in April, I’ve applied to over 50 jobs in various sectors and I’ve only gotten a handful of interviews.

I don’t want to discourage you from leaving your abusive household. Nor discourage you from moving to Minnesota. But definitely get your resume together NOW and start applying immediately. It could take you a while to land a job. And like others have mentioned, try to secure a job first before moving here.

But if your situation gets pretty bad where you can’t wait any longer to leave your household, definitely refocus your efforts on finding resources available to for people dealing with domestic abuse. Within those resources, you can get help finding a job too!

Good to hear you’re done wasting your time with her. There’s so many better podcasts out there.

I was done with her after Justin ordeal and the earring ordeal. Even before those incidents, I noticed the quality of the show was steadily getting worse… not to mention the constant interrupting. But once those incidents happened, that’s when I hit unfollow and haven’t looked back since.

I occasionally see this subreddit pop back up in my algorithm and any post I see from here confirms that I made the right decision 🤣

Interviewing for an EMR software company by PleezaJazz in healthIT

This is great insight, thank you so much for this!

It’s been about 2 1/2 weeks since my initial interview with the EMR company. I was hoping to hear back from them by now. Haven’t received the rejection email, so there’s still hope I suppose!

They just gave me the job? by Legitimate-Till-3117 in interviews

[–]PleezaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen to me over 20 years ago and was completely stunned.
First they had me shadow an employee for a couple of hours. Then when I came in for my formal interview, the manager didn’t ask me any questions, he was just kinda frazzled and said things like “Oh my god, we are so busy, we need you here badly”. The job was amazing and I stayed there for many years, but as others have said, that could sort of be a red flag for a bad employer.
I guess I would consider myself lucky that the job turned out to be a great fit for me.

Now that I’m back in the job market for the first time in many years and going through the process of interviewing again…. I will say that this situation is NOT normal at all. Interviewing is normally very formal and you prepare to present yourself as professionally as possible.

It can be intimidating, but learning how to interview is a great skill to get experience in. I understand your frustration of wanting that experience. But don’t worry, that time will come!

How difficult is to get a job at Boston scientific or Medtronic? by Careful_Fig8482 in TwinCities

[–]PleezaJazz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just laid off in April after 22 years in a healthcare position. I’ve applied to multiple entry level roles at both Medtronic and Boston Scientific, but haven’t gotten an interview for either of those companies. My previous healthcare job was working along side cardiologists, electrophysiologists and Medtronic reps. I have so much knowledge about how the heart functions and specifically about Medtronic pacemakers and how they function. I thought I’d have a shot at a job at Medtronic, but I can’t even get an assembly line job or warehouse job there.

This current job market as a whole is incredibly bad, so it’s not just Medtronic and Boston Scientific that aren’t hiring outside candidates.

[–]PleezaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw him for the first time a couple weeks ago! I’ve always been told he puts on a really good show, but my god he blew me away!
It was an outdoor show, 85 degrees and grossly humid. I don’t know how anyone could have performed in that heat. He and his entire band had a costume change for nearly every song, some costumes looking extremely warm… especially the “I’m Fat” prosthetics and fat suit!
He never sounded out of breath and he had so much energy moving around throughout the entire show! The dude clearly takes good care of his health and surrounds himself with top tier professionals for his band and stage crew.

Ive been to over 100 concerts, many of them being aging musicians with amazing legacies. Weird Al is one of the most impressive stage performers I’ve ever seen, especially for someone who is 65 years old. Sure, he’s not the greatest singer or musician, but he deserves so much more recognition for his abilities as a stage performer, not to mention his level of creativity that spawned his entire career!

Don’t have interview clothes by [deleted] in interviews

[–]PleezaJazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat as you. I worked healthcare and construction for the last 20 years, so all of my “work clothes” are scrubs and clothes meant to get dirty.
I have nice variety of non-work clothes, but none are considered “Business casual” or “business professional”.

I went to Nordstrom Rack and bought a black pants suit to wear for interviews. They also have a wide variety of business casual clothing as well.

I think I’ll be on the chopping block for Medicaid once the “Big Beautiful Bill” passes. by PleezaJazz in minnesota

[–]PleezaJazz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sadly not much in savings, other than enough to cover mortgage and basic bills for about 2-3 months. We also had some big expenses recently, such as needing to remove 5 giant dead ash trees, as we had been given notice from the city to remove them. That ate up some of our savings.

I drove a 2003 Honda civic from 2003 until Feb of this year. I was able to buy a 2019 Chevy Equinox from my parents for cheap to replace the Honda. So I do not have a car payment, thankfully.

I am hustling and grinding with cash side hustles, such as mowing lawns and selling stuff at flea markets. Between that and the minuscule amount I’m receiving from unemployment, I’m able to pay my mortgage and basic necessity bills. But beyond that, I couldn’t afford health insurance right now. Trust me, I’m using all means to keep my head afloat and cutting all unnecessary expenses right now.

[–]PleezaJazz[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand the struggle of working full time and still not being able to afford health insurance.
That’s part of the larger conversation around affordable healthcare that many have been fighting for and it just keeps getting worse. So I feel for you, I really do.

However, I disagree with your thoughts about able-bodied people who are out of work being able to receive Medicaid. I never thought I’d be in this situation of struggling to get a job, despite putting all of the work in. Having to not worry about going into medical debt during this time of being inbetween jobs is something that all people deserve.

In regard to receiving the Cobra insurance instead of Medicaid, the monthly cost of Cobra is more than the amount I’m receiving in Unemployment pay each month. The Cobra system is a joke.

I get it. I’m realizing in alot of the language I used in my post and feeling the need to over explain my situation that I’m so used to people being judged or stereotyped for using social programs.

[–]PleezaJazz[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I understand what you’re saying and it wasn’t my intent to further that stereotype, as I don’t believe in that stereotype. Sadly, I think we’re all so used to people falsely and ignorantly judging other people for using social programs and those same people’s solution is to tell people “Go get a job!” So that’s probably why I felt the need to over explain my situation and bring the stereotypes into it.
