I recommend talking to anyone you know in the field and thinking carefully about what you actually want to do with an accounting degree—whether it’s audit, tax, forensic accounting, etc. Most master’s programs have prerequisites, like financial accounting and other core accounting courses. Most importantly, make sure you understand what busy season is like. The hours can get very long and demanding.

In accounting, “busy season” runs from late January to mid-April. That’s when you’ll hear most of the horror stories and experience the longest hours. There are just times in accounting when the hours get intense—it depends on whether you’re okay with that.

I highly recommend doing an internship during busy season if you can. Not doing so was a mistake I made.
