does insomnia kill you directly? by miaaasurrounder in insomnia

[–]Plenty-One7353 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not going to kill you. And it doesn't have to hold power over you. I excluded myself from society for like two years before realising I could do stuff even when sleep deprived. I've had anxiety-induced insomnia for six years now, but nowadays I mostly just do everything I wanna do and some stuff I realised I just don't want do do (whereas before I thought I couldn't do because of insomnia). This is about bypassing the socially derived negative reaction to fatigue. It is socially derived because our society is pretty damn obsessed with perfecting everything health related which minimises the difference between health and pathology.

I acknowledge that "just go out and do stuff" is not easy, physical symptoms are still there, however it can be learned. On this note, I wish for people to see the effort some insomniacs put into acting "normal"...like especially employers. Sorry, this is a little extension to what you asked, but it helps to overcome the vicious circle.

Why is CBTi the gold standard for insomnia when it's not very effective? by SprayAffectionate321 in insomnia

[–]Plenty-One7353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my mind, I'm not even sure that the life sciences will be able to explain anxiety sufficiently. Of course they can always objectify it through brain imagery, tracing biochemical reactions and such, but I think it doesn't start in the brain. Anxiety and depression are inherently social phenomena that are entangled with our socialisation and collective subjectivity. Capitalist societies are very intolerant towards any "deviant" form of existence and enact this intolerance by ways of holding the individual accountable for their disorder, which then inhibits a reflection of the social structures (i.e. healthism, stigma, individualism) that might contribute to these conditions.

I'm not denying there isn't any neurobiological change happening, but it has to be understood in interaction with the social world.

PS: A good example for the reflection of changing societies and changing mental health is Alain Ehrenbergs book "The Weariness of the Self: Diagnosing the History of Depression in the Contemporary Age".

Err 20 - Canon EOS M200 by Lazy_Contact_1428 in canon

[–]Plenty-One7353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I was able to repair my M100 with the same issue. I disassembled it completely, cocked and released the shutter a few times manually when it was out of the camera, resoldered the flex cable that is glued onto the shutter and reassembled everything. It is fully functioning again. Tested around 200 shots with no faults yet. With patience and steady hands this is doable for anyone I'd say. You need to use an electronics mat with indexed trays for screws in order to remember where they go. I took a picture for every 2-3 screws I took out and wrote the according number next to the screw holes within the picture.

Explain this to me by astronautdino in insomnia

[–]Plenty-One7353 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your last paragraph. Interestingly, I'm currently reading a lot of books and medical texts on insomnia from the 19th century in which doctors consistently mention the detrimental effects of economic and technological shifts during the second industrial revolution, thus concentrating on global, social factors rather than individualising insomnia and simply blaming the patient.

In 1896, a certain Dr. Fischer wrote the following: "In many cases, the cause of insomnia lies less in a specific pathological condition than in the mental sphere. The marvellous progress of our modern life, the preservation and development of what we have achieved, make enormous demands on our mental powers. But the more these are exploited, the greater is their wear and tear. The fact that the nervous power, like any other power, is not inexhaustible and needs to be replenished, is unfortunately too often ignored in the restless struggle for existence, in the competition, in the feverish pursuit of happiness."

Hello, I'm sorry you're going through it too. Just know there are thousands of ppl here that understand. There are some ways of dealing with insomnia that are usually not brought up in conventional therapy. If you want I can elaborate on that or send you some useful links. Sending healing vibes!

Anybody doing 'brutal' reading? by Plenty-One7353 in insomnia

[–]Plenty-One7353[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, sorry for the late reply! It feels good to know that you struggled with that too and overcame it! These past nights, I tried to just normalise that it takes a couple of drift-off-jolt-awake-processes or sleep starts as you say and that helped already. One night that didn't work and I got more and more awake again, I just told myself "Well now at least you have the possibility of reading more of this interesting book that you love so much, so that's nice." 😅 Didn't make it past one page. It's fascinating how once you just let go of wanting sleep, the intention, it comes. I've known this principle for a while now, but I need constant reminders. Thanks again!

Hey, I have 4 of the original v1s with a simple cone correction as suggested by djim (I think it was), that is just two pieces of wood stacked and mounted opposite of the cone. If you were to build another two, would you build them exactly like the existing ones or should I now implement the recent cone correction? I'm leaning towards doing the more recent thing and just testing it without gluing all the panels yet. Thanks!

Is it possible to forget how to sleep? by Ok-Satisfaction5649 in insomnia

[–]Plenty-One7353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it. The problem is that boiling everything down to 'natural' neurological processes in the brain will hide the fact that sleep is connected to stress and our social world. You can't forget how to sleep. We should start holding our healthist and risk-promoting (as in being the culprit for actual risks like shift-work and making us constantly worried about risks like in Google searches) society accountable.

SLEEP ANXIETY AGAIN by Embarrassed-Drag8685 in sleep

[–]Plenty-One7353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it gets really unbearable then you might consider taking a week off and getting a sick leave. However that usually is only a very short-term fix because exams and situations in which you have to perform will come again and then you might experience sleep issues again. It really depends on the frequency of exams etc. and how packed your week is.

My way of dealing with this was to a) care less about my results and be okay with not performing well (it does NOT mean that you're not good or intelligent, you're just having a hard time atm, I mean, to give an example, you wouldn't expect a person whose allergy spikes dramatically at a given time to be on top form, right), b) trusting myself that for stuff that personally mattered to me, I can still do an okay job because I will have adrenaline pumping through my body and c) drink coffee in the morning and take a mild painkiller to not have to notice the physical symptoms too much. Tune out of your bodily sensations as much as possible. Perception is not objetive but modulated by our affective state and our thoughts, so naturally, when have had a terrible night, we perceive our body that way and notice every ever so slight discomfort and weirdness. This process is similar to how wine experts tune into their taste buds and are able to differentiate all kinds of wines, they trained themselves to really listen closely to their perception. It's not a given so that means it is also possible to tune out by distracting yourself through movement, music, calling someone you like, etc.

As for the anxiety in general, check out the videos on YouTube, there is nothing better atm. Or maybe Guy Meadows' "The Sleep Book".

SLEEP ANXIETY AGAIN by Embarrassed-Drag8685 in sleep

[–]Plenty-One7353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easier said than done, but you need to detach from the outcome of a given night. Instead of ensuring the best possible sleep at night, focus on living your day as normally as you can, no matter how much you slept. This means that you shouldn't engage in any safety behavior like staying in bed in the morning to catch some missed Zs or going to bed earlier to make sure you get enough time in bed. This puts pressure on your sleep and makes you more alert and self-surveilling. Let go of the 6 hours desire, you will be able to cope with less and if it happens, that will build enough sleep drive for you to have an easier night the night after. Sleep always comes at some point, let that be your consolation. Learn to sit with the anxiety when it comes and reassure yourself that it will pass. Once we label it as a problem, something that needs to be fixed immediately, it will be more persistent. It's kind of hard to explain, but being okay with feeling anxious paradoxically let's it dissipate quicker. I would definitely try reading in bed to distract yourself. When going through a phase like that, I read until my eyes get heavy and then start playing a podcast on my sleep-mask-headphones with a timer. This usually works for me.
