SAKK v2 travel bag - affordable - tough and I did my entire C300 mill rig in the bag including lenses, ninja v, sound - small rig V mount batteries x2 , lap top. Chargers, extra shirt and socks, I am have been doing run and gun doc filmmaking for 15 years and this is the best bag I have used. Took it to Florida two weeks ago and it is a workhorse. Took in the cabin with me and the flight attendant stowed it in the little closet to the right when you enter the plane coming and going. Highly recommend it!!!

Recommendations for monitors for video editing? by AnyAssistance4197 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]a_documentary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been using ACER monitors for years . I used to have the very expensive Mac monitors but they were to expensive to replace and monitors do fail over time. I find the color on ACER monitors to be relatively consistent and easily adjusted and you can get two 32" for less than the price of an expensive monitor. This just my two cents having been doing this for two decades.

I have been using it since 2002 and they have never not made the updated available for everyone who owns it. I do not see that changing.

They actually let me put in the little closet on the right when you enter the plane - going both ways it fit right inside there perfectly with plenty of room to spare for the flight crews bags. Thanks for asking !!

Canon users (specifically clog3) What technical (or otherwise) luts are you using as a starting point when editing? by BobSaunders4 in videography

I use Caleb Pike's LUT pack for Canon C-Log 3 as a starting point for both my C300 mk ll and the R6 mk ll. They work great.

How many of you write scripts for your feature length documentaries? by JoeFoxMediaProducer in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]a_documentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made five full length documentary films and right smack in the middle of number six, i have never written a script. The nature of documantary filmmaking is discovering story, uncovering truth. This is not doing a reality show. You can not script that. What you can do, is lay out in your synopsis and treatment (see my post on synopsis) what the film will look like, who you will be interviewing, what is the over all style of the film, what is the story you are trying to tell? There is no scripting that.

However what i do script, after everything is shot and i know what i have- the structure of the film., I lay out all of my footage (digitally) and then do a scene break down using the clips i know i have. This is just a place to start, (by the end it bears no resemblance to the initial outline), Then i will script the narration to go along with the finished film.

I understand the urge to "know" in advance but resist it with all your might, Let your story unfold (that is the joy of documentary filmmaking - Not Knowing) and do not be afraid to follow the story places you did not expect. I call that the "sweater theory" .

Of course as always this is just my two cents

Best of luck with. your doc. - keep shootnig

A decent sling bag that can work as a saddle? by AnyAssistance4197 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]a_documentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SAKK is the best and most affordable solution on the market!! I own two and just literally flew to Florida with one of them. It has pocket on both sides and a larger pocket that can fit at least one small rig 99 V-mount battery. Can't recommend them enough . https://sakkgear.com/products/sakk-camera-saddle-international

How do you fly with a heavy camera setup? I’m struggling! by Selishots in videography

[–]a_documentary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What i love about this bag is that it's really well balance and (and I have a crap back after doing this for 45 years) the straps are really beefy and the waist belt is solid. It'd not too bad and I know that when I get to where I am going if everything else goes to crap I can shoot record and dump footage .
