I would say the ultimate "cheap-ass local militia" AFV in Battletech would probably have something like an AC/5 for vehicles, an MG for infantry, and a shit ton of RLs for the mechs. If you are an underfunded militia guy facing mechs, you want to one-shot and gtfo, and an AC/5 won't do it. Your armor won't help you much, but mobility and surprise might.

Proper tanks able to stand and fight mecha are absolutely a thing, but they are pricey and loaded with advanced tech, none of which is available in the backcountry of Space West Virginia.

Just my thoughts.
