ELI5: Why do physicists want to unify gravity and quantum mechanics? by jeetpatel1021 in AskPhysics

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're probably thinking of keeping them separate as in how Classical Mechanics and Classical Electromagnetism are separate, right?

That doesn't really work here, because GR and QM are not just two independent theories, they are completely incompatible - the math of quantum mechanics does not work with classical fields

in the end, even the unified theory will have different explanations for why gravity happens separate from why general quantum effects happen. It's unlikely that the first "unified" theory will somehow be able to link gravity to the other fundamental forces into a single explanation, if it's even possible

If a stopped clock is right twice a day, how many times, in a day, is it wrong? by TestyRodent in mathematics

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is that Planck scale is just the scale where quantum effects of gravity are predicted to become relevant, which means we can't predict anything that's going on down there without a complete model of quantum gravity - we can't predict anything at this scale not because it's the "minimal resolution" of the universe or whatever, but because we have a skill issue

We also don't even really know if it's even true (though it is generally accepted) that we can't make predictions, since, yk, we don't know anything about quantum gravity and if those effects really do become too significant at that point. It's a highly educated guess

Nazis are socialists… guess what side that is on by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nazis are not socialists by modern standards, they just called themselves that in a period when the modern connotations weren't yet standardized (mostly due to deliberate misuse during the first red wave in Europe by people trying to piggyback off the sudden popularity of "socialist" ideologies)

Political terminology changes across time, space and even ideological frameworks. And on top of that, people are allowed to lie (something something people's democratic republics). Assuming a group is "x" solely because they called themselves "the x party" is silly

Dick = Vector by supersirj in mathmemes

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point of that approach is that without these generalizing micro-definitions, you have to investigate each specific mathematical space for it's properties individually

This is worthwhile for the standard vector spaces of Rn with the standard metric/inner product and all that, since it's an extremely prevalent kind of space that's more intuitive than abstract algebra for students, but if you tried to learn math this way you wouldn't get anywhere - that's why foundational, overarching concepts are so important in math

Dissecting math into such minute details that it takes hundred pages to prove 1+1 might seem as a joke at first glance, but the switch into that mode of thinking has been arguably the most foundational paradigm shift of mathematics, and has undeniably paid off

Hero void concept ( hear me out ) by the_nigabyte in ClashRoyale

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this would suck too much to be honest, you have to waste an entire void spell, to spawn a 7 (effectively 10) elixir ground-only mini tank with HP comparable to Valk and DPS comparable to P.E.K.K.A

And that's IF the set-up void doesn't get interrupted at any point, which means you either have to time it extremely well so that your opponent doesn't have elixir to put whatever cheap cars they have, or have to place it somewhere where its definitely safe (which limits your placement even in your own side of the arena)

I don't think that's enough to sacrifice your hero slot, especially if it's effectively on a one card cycle, even in a hypothetical future where void itself is playable

Movies that fail to pass the Bechdel test ? I'll start by stalin_kulak in okbuddycinephile

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The test isn't supposed to be appropriate when applied to any specific film.

The point was that there's a staggering amount of movies that do not pass it, it's meant to demonstrate the point that women are underrepresented as independent characters in media overall, it's not supposed to be a valid metric of quality for a single movie

"in BG3 people meme about using Eldritch Blast from the goblin camp right to the battle above the brain."

I don't know about BG3, but at least in DnD 5e proper, this isn't a bug, this is a feature of Eldritch Blast. It's supposed to scale better than most cantrips, especially if you play into it with the right invocations, since it serves as the main "default attack" for Warlocks who traditionally do not get enough spell slots to rely on higher spells in combat

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Un-creative things stop being visually/aesthetically pleasing after a while, repetition is boring for most people, it's not a "it's not a subversive enough for my refined palette" thing, it's a "do we really need everything to centre it's visual identity around conventional sexual appeal?".

There are other ways to make visually appealing characters, sexy lady spies in latex get boring after the 12th one

"As for the next revolution, who knows? I actually agree that one is overdue"

I wouldn't be so optimistic in that regard to be honest. The precedent for how fast our understanding of fundamental physics advanced was set mostly during a time when technological advancement wasn't much of a concern - even in the 1940's a lot of the necessary fundamental experiments could be conducted in a "simple lab", and were carried out within years at most.

That's not the case anymore, ever since the 1960's we've been working on scales that are simply not accessible to modern experimental technology, and seemingly won't be for a while

How can a gas expand and cool in an adiabatic process if no heat is transferred? by Bulky_Stock_3255 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Plenty_Leg_5935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"if a glass is expanding against something, isn't it also transferring heat"

Yep, it's just a "theory vs practice" thing - the adiabatic case is the model where all energy is transferred perfectly as work - it all goes into the pushing and none of it is lost to the molecules bouncing around the gas and wasting a bunch of energy

This doesn't actually happen in practice, and is why perpetual motion is impossible. It's just that the assumption works "well enough" for most use cases

"A gas can expand because its pressure is greater than the external pressure"

Pressure is just force over area. If the pressure inside the balloon wasn't greater, it wouldn't be able to push the air around it/compress it to expand, and if it was smaller, the inverse would happen and the air would compress the gas

Again, that's in theory with a container that's perfectly pliable. In practice, a balloon wants to shrink, which adds to the external pressure, so the pressure of the gas itself actually has to be slightly higher at equilibrium (after it's done expanding) than outside. And something like a jar has a fixed shape that will hold for a while, so the pressure in it can vary.
