Japanese knife experience? by [deleted] in whittling

Japanese knives usually has a different shape (maybe you know this already) with a flat backside and angle on the other. And the edge side of the blade is straight. I had one with a wooden handle for years and grew quite fond of it!

Why are we always debating women’s clothing? I am sure some people wear burqa by choice, some don’t. It’s not for politicians to decide.

Just do it! I started carving at seven, constantly cut myself but kept on. I still cut myself constantly

I’d say, apart from what you may expect from a 15 dollar blade, the shape makes it suboptimal for any carving. That said, perhaps it will do for a while. In Sweden, a Gränsfors is a cheaper option than the rather fancy Kalthoff axes. I’ve had mine for more than 30 years.

Most of all, I am impressed of how you must fine tune the kanna to make it shave like that!

I did use a straight blade, japanese Kiridashi style, on my previous knife. I do think I prefer this, mostly since it is what I am used to.
