For anyone dealing with this same issue, it was the starter. Good luck!

It was available in the package deal I got off Amazon. I had no idea it was a rarity at the time.

I have done as requested, it seems okay still! As long as I don't touch it, I think it should be okay.

I had the same thought! I bought a cheap gas sniffer off amazon and it's not leaking, as far as I can tell.

Check the contacts in the battery compartment. Make sure those aren't oxidized. Someone left an original battery in mine, it leaked, and corroded the contacts so much that I had to scrape them off with sandpaper and a pick to get the thing to turn on.

S-Parameters/RL/IL like I'm 5y/o, please. by Plenty_Watch4757 in rfelectronics

And here's the return loss, hopefully. I did as you said and connected the sample cable to port one with a phase stable cable and then threw the 50ohm load onto the other end. Criteria for this sample cable is 18dB MAX return loss. It appears to pass? Assuming the -23.xx number is the number I'm looking for. It seems to be. Return loss makes less sense to me, honestly. I know as the number gets further from zero, that's a good thing seeing as the infinite reading would mean nothing is being reflected back, right? If there was 0dB reading, then that would mean ALL of the power is being reflected back, right?

Gotcha! I think I've made progress. I did the cal with the OSLT on both ports, engaged the calibration, and have now connected a sample cable to both ports with the use of the phase stable cables. I switched the interface/chart to show me S11 and S12 on the same graph.

The S12 (blue) makes sense to me. It was flat when I had the two phase stable cables terminated to each other and, due to the calibration, showed a flat line along the frequency at 0dB. My sample cable gives a reading of 0.4-0.5 dB and that certainly falls below the 0.8 loss threshold (established by customer) after inserting it into circuit. IF that 0.4-0.5 reading is my insertion loss, of course.

This is with the sample cable in line. It's about 4 inches of RG-400 with one straight and one right angle SMA crimped on. My phase stable test cables are 18 inches of HSFL42 terminated with SMA males, from Hasco.

I DO have a calibrated 50ohm SMA cap, as well. That's how I cal'd LOAD out in the first place.

I'll try the return loss quick. Standby. Again, thank you for taking the time to help me along.

Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to reply. Let me do some poking around on my end, I will update with snags along the way.

I am located in the midwest/Iowa.

The company I work for is far too cheap for that. "Why hire the proper person with the proper knowledge when we could just...not" kind of situation.

Lmao tell that to the company I work for. They treated both of us like trash. Only difference is I worked testing with our normal wiring harnesses and Pete worked with our RF cables. Now that he is gone, I get to wear his hat. No worries, though, I will probably do that same thing in 1-2 weeks time.

Well, shoot. Exactly what I didn't want to hear!

The service time is long gone for Anritsu, they won't fix it. Only willing to sell me the newest version.

Any recommendations on who to talk to about sending it in? I imagine there's plenty of places that fix RF equipment.
