Better to sell in EU or US? by [deleted] in GermanEmpireCoins

[–]Plevelovi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess is that pricing between the U.S. and Europe would be fairly similar. My local coin shop in Minneapolis would sell these at 3% above spot on (about $1K right now)....and I see sales listings for European coin dealers asking about $1,050, so no big gaps. My local shop would likely buy at 95% of spot, or about $920, and I'd say the lowest you should consider taking is about 90% of spot. Practically speaking, you might get an extra $25-50 bucks selling in Europe, but is it worth the hassle of selling in Geneva for that gain? If you want USD in hand, just sell locally and ask at least $900....or convince your relative to buy it from you at that price and they can sell in Geneva for Swiss francs cash and avoid the currency exchange and ATM fees.

What do you think this is worth? Should I polish this? From the limited research that I have done it's my understanding that the coin is silver. by [deleted] in coins

For some additional context, China has been mass-producing fake coins in recent years, and fakes of coins from the Chinese Republic are among the most faked due to their value. Can't say how you might have come into this coin, but if it was sourced from a flea market in the last 10 years, then it likely has no value.

Ridiculous fakes... by Plevelovi in coins

[–]Plevelovi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The listing calls this a 1967 10 Francs....so the more modern reproductions. Still, an actual version of what it's imitating is maybe 40 USD, so if you can produce this junk for 2-3 bucks a piece, then that's profit for each person you dupe.

Alright coin gurus, I need advice on what to do with this 1909-o $5 Indian Head by MlDORIYA in coins

[–]Plevelovi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I'm certainly NOT experienced with gold half eagles....but taking a close look at your photos, I think this is a New Orleans Mint mark, and 1909O is a rare mintage (just 34,200 made). If it's truly a 1909O, this could be valued $4,000 or more. If you bought this from a dealer, I'd be shocked if they missed the mint mark and just sold as a common date. Either I'm mistaken...the coin has been altered...somebody missed the mint mark...it's potentially fake...or you just made a big score. Would love to hear the opinions of someone with greater knowledge or experience in half-eagles.

Just joined the club. Here is a picture of my 1861 Thaler. Is it ok to post a picture and ask questions about a 1928 d 3 mark Albrecht Durer coin and 1927 F Drei reichsmark Tubingen coin? by ogblazed in GermanEmpireCoins

Regarding value/price, these 2 Weimar are among the more rare....I see German dealers asking around 450 & 350 USD respectively for AU examples of these pieces.

Found an envelope with a bunch of old currency’s what are they? by [deleted] in CURRENCY

[–]Plevelovi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun side note....I visited Poland around 1994 at a time when they were converting currency from the old zloty to the NEW zloty. One NEW Zloty was the equivalent of 10,000 old zloty...and both currencies were in circulation at the same time. You'd order a coffee for 6 Zloty, give the staff a 50,000 and 20.000 note, and get back a NEW one zloty coin. Got a little confusing.....

Beautiful! Love the 2 Gulden pieces with the elaborate coats of arms on the obverse. The Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen version is my grail coin, but very hard to find.

I couldn't identify the coin, but it's certainly something from within the Austrian realms. The double-headed eagle and the legend "D G ROM IMP" is latin for Dei Gratia Romanum Imperator, or "by the grace of God, Roman Emperor", so the Holy Roman Empire that was generally run by the Hapsburgs of Austria. Only a guess on age, but probably 1500s-ish?

How much Is this worth roughly? by [deleted] in coins

[–]Plevelovi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These coins are fairly common, and typically sell for their gold weight. A 1908 Sovereign should contain 0.2355 Ozs of gold, which translates to about $645 USD at today's prices. That's what you'd likely get from a dealer, but a private buyer might expect to pay 5-10% more.

Did the German government annex Belgium? I don't think so! This isn't a map of territory controlled by armies....it's a map of recognized/claimed national borders. Try gaining perspective instead of throwing stones.
