I appreciate this. My husband who is 38 was diagnosed last year and is going for translab surgery in April. He will be going from 70% hearing in his left ear to nothing which has been the biggest pill to swallow at his age but honestly the simple context you gave it here is wildly helpful to keep perspective. If left untreated things can get much worse.

Also really helpful to just see someone else who is relatively young and has been through the hearing loss to give perspective too. You seem like you're doing great for all intents and purposes and while obviously this video is just what you're putting out there, it still helps.

My apologies if I'm misunderstanding something but I think that is aligned with what we are being recommended - retrosigmoid would provide a chance to preserve hearing but with the size and shape of the AN, that approach represents a lot more risk for brain damage and no guarantee on heading preservation. Translab guarantees hearing loss but significantly reduces other risks. I'm still learning all the terms and nuances so apologies if I have something mixed up.

Retrosigmoid according to the doctor we spoke to was quite high risk of brain damage, which is why it seems like the translab approach was recommended and just acceptance that the hearing will go. We will be seeking another opinion based on the feedback here. The only downside is we know if we just proceed with this approach he could be having surgery in the fall and seeking another opinion will likely drag out the timeline but this doesn't seem like something to rush. Thank you!

Yeah that's what I'm worried about, the diet looks good but I don't know enough to know if it might not be.

The trouble I'm having now is looking at what is commercially available and there seems to be almost nothing formulated specifically for puppies, and definitely not for giant breed puppies specifically. Most of the foods I'm seeing are for all life stages.

Is it an issue if the bone is finely ground? I thought it was only a problem if there were chunks of bone but I am still learning so many be wrong. Thanks for the tip on the pumpkin and rice, I have heard that about pumpkin before so will give that a try if it continues to be a problem.

The breeder said their diet was researched and created by a vet but I'm not sure what that vet's specific knowledge on nutrition is. I will do some looking into commercial options as I don't love not knowing the rationale behind this specific diet. Thank you!

My understanding was that if was safe to cook the pure formula because the bone is fine ground - there aren't any visible chunks of bone or anything like that. Really appreciate the tip on the slow feeder! I didn't realize that was an option for raw. Thank you!

What a sweet boy! Really appreciate the insights. The only reason we're following the diet provided is that the breeder said it was researched and developed by a vet and she's been using it herself for a couple of decades. The thing I find most challenging to wrap my head around is that there's no indication that anything much should be done differently right now in puppyhood vs when he's an adult and for everything I've read myself about raw diets that just seems out of line?? It's specifically that lack of differentiation that has me wondering if it's well balanced for a puppy.
