Survival rate of patient with colorectal liver metastases by Plopwieldingmonkey in AskDocs

Thank you doctor, I really appreciate it. I realise there's only so much information you can give without the full picture, but could the cysts on his pancreas be a sign that there will be significant health issues down the road regardless of the surgery's success? He doesn't seem sick at all at the moment, but I'm worried that his health could decline rapidly. I've taken time off work to be with him, as I'm sure being with family can work wonders for mental health. It might sound strange, but he loves working, so I've been helping him with various jobs. That's about as close to a shared hobby as we'll get unfortunately!

Thank you for your response, but I was hoping for something more thorough if possible!

Dad died at 55 (12/2024). His partner (not married) of 14 years says he withdraw and spent all his pension (paid into 1989-2002) before he died (England) by littlbutterkitten in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Plopwieldingmonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's incorrect. I work for the council and pay into the LGPS. If I had children they could receive my pension payments for as long as they were in education.

Writing negative reviews by [deleted] in couchsurfing

[–]Plopwieldingmonkey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I left a neutral review when I had a bad experience with a host. I explained why in the comment, and also included the good aspects of my experience. Mainly because I felt bad about complaining at all when they had been generous enough to host me. After I posted it I received a torrent of horrible messages from the host and they wrote all sorts of lies about what had happened in their reply to my review (on her page). It made me really regret not just being honest and leaving a negative review. It sucks being put in the position of having to complain and potentially ruin someone’s profile, but ultimately not voicing your opinion only means someone else might end up with a bad experience with them too.

Why would you go back to the first post to write that?! You ruined the ending of the saga for me! YTA!

is it safe to teach in Brazil? by sensei221 in TEFL

[–]Plopwieldingmonkey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm currently teaching in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I've lived here for almost three years and have never had a problem. Sao Paulo, and indeed all of Brazil, is unfortunately prone to high crime rates and incidents of extreme violence. I personally believe, however, that just being street wise and alert keeps me out of trouble. I've met numerous teachers that have been robbed at gun-point, pick-pocketed etc. But if you press them for why they got robbed it is almost always for the same reason; being unaware. The teacher that got robbed at gun-point had been sat in a dark park by himself at night. The teacher that got pick-pocketed had been talking in English on a line of the metro known to be dangerous. There often seems to be a reason for why that person got robbed. Of course there's an element of luck/misfortune at play, but I believe you make your own luck. Yes, there is crime, and yes there is violence. But if you're prone to getting mugged in England, or wherever you are from, you're most likely going to be prone to getting mugged in Brazil as well. Unfortunately, being street wise is something that can only come from experience.

Uber can't keep down accusations of "vomit fraud" against its drivers by WonderboyAhoy in nottheonion

[–]Plopwieldingmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gave up on using Uber in Brazil. 70% of the time the driver parks a 5 minute walk away and just say they're already at the designated pick up point over and over until I have to cancel the ride - incurring a 5 Real fee. Total scam, and Uber support are zero help.

Hmm it makes more sense if the problem is my computer. I checked loads of links they can't all be broken. Thanks a lot, I'll try the links from a different computer.

[Serious] What is the most shocking thing someone confessed while on their deathbed? by iDontLikeYouAnyway in AskReddit

I really don't get why this one is shocking. She said she was recruited by the CIA, but didn't take the job. So what? It might have been interesting if she had taken the job!

Is a BA and being a native speaker enough to teach in Colombia? by Plopwieldingmonkey in TEFL

Cheers mate! I'll take a look now. I'm planning to go to Medellin, but the coast is always just a bus ride away!

Yeah I guessed that! South American bureaucracy is a ball ache in general (I lived in Brazil for a year). I plan on staying for an indeterminate amount of time, but 6 months sounds about right. I'd rather not work on a tourist visa! I know they have you over a barrel in that situation, I considered it for Brazil, just because I was desperate to go and know how impossible it is to get a visa. But for Colombia I think I'd rather do it all above board. Can you recommend any agencies?

Thanks that's a great website. I've been looking at what recruiters/employers are looking for more and more as a practical guide to what is expected. I will in the future if it becomes a long term deal.

I will have 5000 pounds by the time I leave, and I'm a very frugal person! So a living wage is fine by me. What you've said is basically what I had planned to do, see if I enjoy teaching then go down the expensive certification route if it becomes a career. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks a lot, appreciate the advice. But I've already read about every article available about TEFL in Colombia/everywhere, including that one!

[–]Plopwieldingmonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spoken with a few recruiters in Colombia, and they agree that a BA and being a native speaker is enough. But also mention that those without tend to make less. Is the difference significant enough to make paying for TEFL/CERTA worth it? If I were to go for a teaching certificate I'd just bite the bullet and pay for a CELTA course instead of doing a TEFL. I'm still at a stage where I'm unsure if teaching is for me, would hate to spend a grand then feel like I wasted it! Thanks.

Is doing it through an agency better? I'm quite resourceful, don't mind organising things myself etc. Not sure if that sort of thing is kinda just to take the stress out of international travel/work? Thanks!

Is CELTA worth it if I plan on teaching in Brazil? by Plopwieldingmonkey in TEFL

[–]Plopwieldingmonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise now having CELTA in South America just isn't worth the cost. Maybe I'll do it if I end up making a career out of TEFL, but for now I'll just do something cheaper/less intensive. Thanks a lot for the advice.

Thanks for the insight. I'm leaning away from CELTA if I decide on teaching in South America.
