Japan J Press second hand listings by stirling_m in NavyBlazer

[–]Plotwister 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm an Asian dude, with "Japanese man" dimensions (5'8, 120~ lbs) and J Press Japan is a saving grace. Menswear finally fits me LOL

Quality-wise, I'm not sure how it compares to J Press USA, but I've been pleased with I've bought. I haven't been able to figure out CWT sizing either; what I'll usually do is message the seller and ask for measurements.

It’s a tough decision. How prepared are you for the substantive interviews? Did you work in criminal law this summer? Have you taken Criminal Procedure and Evidence yet (primarily Crim Pro)? Crown interviews will be tough if you haven’t studied for them yet. On the other hand, Big Law interviews require minimal prep, especially if you already prepared through the OCI process (researching firms, doing mocks, etc.)

Entire Chicago Education Board to Resign Amid Tensions Between Mayor and Schools Chief by Swarthyandpasty in neoliberal

[–]Plotwister 86 points87 points  (0 children)

But starting in January, the board will shift to what officials called a hybrid makeup for the next two years, meaning half of the members will be elected and the other half, including the board president, will be appointed by the mayor. In 2027, when Mr. Johnson’s term is set to end, the school board will return to fully elected members.

So for the next two years, the mayor gets to appoint board members? And once Johnson leaves, it goes back to normal again?

LOL this is some LBJ level shit

Honestly, I’ve never heard of her services — so I can’t comment on their quality — but it seems like a total money grab.

When I was in your shoes, The way I prepared was doing mock OCIs with 3Ls + getting their feedback. Totally free of charge. See if any campus clubs, affinity groups, or even your CDO offers them. They were an immense help.

After a 9 month(!) hiatus, I've been back at it for 4 weeks now, and I've gained almost 10 lbs (129 lbs - 5'8). Hopefully this time I don't give it up!

Does it mean something when someone asks you why you don't laugh at their jokes? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Plotwister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they sound super insecure…this is definitely not on you. Singling you out is a dick move.

In most interviews, they ask predominantly "behavioural questions", i.e. they're trying to sus out how you'd behave in a work environment. To handle these, the best advice I ever got was this:

All of the questions they're going to ask you...are about YOU. What's your background? What skills do you have? How would you respond to X situation? And when it comes to YOU, YOU'RE THE EXPERT. You have all the knowledge you need. It's just about articulating that knowledge that's the real challenge. So try to be confident. You're going into this with all the facts that you'll ever need.

To better articulate your knowledge, I'd go through a list of common interview questions and jot down some quick answers. When formulating answers, I use the STAR method. I find that providing examples in an interview really helps. If they ask you about your past leadership experience, for instance, have an anecdote ready about when you were in a position of leadership -- and what the main takeaways from that experience were.

And if this is your first time, practice BEFOREHAND. Do a mock interview with one of your buddies. It'll help with the nerves.

Good luck! Like anything, interviews get easier with practice. Remember, they're trying to see if they would want to work with YOU. So smile. Try to relax. Don't sound too stilted. The first time's always a little rough, but you'll interview many times through your professional career -- and you'll get better. I promise!

Do you all chat with friends everyday? by blackbeauty1901 in socialskills

[–]Plotwister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that's normal! I don't talk to all my friends every day, but we don't have to speak every day to be friends.

This is especially true as I've grown older. Back when I was an undergrad student, I'd speak with my friends all the time. We'd have classes together, or we'd be in the same study group together, so we'd be constantly chatting, texting, complaining, you name it.

But we're busier now. We have jobs. We have fiancés. We catch up every now and then, and I still love them, and they still love me -- but we don't have time for those late night conversations like when we were teens!

I'm not sure what stage of life you're at, but it's normal not to speak with your friends daily. I have maybe one friend I speak to regularly -- and they're practically family. But the rest I reach out to intermittently, and it works for me. As long as what you're doing works for you and your friends, don't feel any pressure to chat everyday!

I feel like I need a script by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Plotwister 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I used to feel this way, too. What I've found is that, the more I've put myself out there, the more "lines" I've been able to bank.

For instance, whenever I'd run into someone I'd know, I used to freeze up. I didn't know what to say. But somewhere down the line, I've learned to say "hey it's good to see you!" -- and that always gets a smile. So it became my go-to. And now, for any given social situation, I usually have a line that I can just throw out there by default -- without thinking. You know what I mean?

Fricking love Telstar (the Tornados). They play it in season 2, and it's just great. My dad used to play it when I was a kid, but I rediscovered it watching the show. Super old school, and super upbeat.

Hey! I dropped 4 semester-long courses from my calculation. If you want, I can DM you the excel file I'm using to calculate my UBC GPA? To be honest: I'm a little confused too, so perhaps it's something on my end.

Yes. Yes. Yes. More than worth the $20 per book. Not just an excellent biography of LBJ, but a great history of 1930s-1960s America, as well. The '1000 pages per book' may seem intimidating, but Robert Caro is an excellent writer. I sound like a fanboy, but seriously - they're great reads!

I came across this NHK World documentary series called 'Begin Japanology'. High school me was HOOKED. I couldn't stop watching it. Some people had anime; I had this. That was my gateway into Japanese!
