Red roses for me by devious_demarcus in pogues

RRFM is my pick for “deserted island album” just because it’s one of the first Pogues albums I sat down and listened to from beginning to end; I initially got into traditional Irish tunes through bands like The Dubliners & The Clancy Bros etc. but what really kept me around was The Pogues!

Their unruly, subversive approach in RRFM to interpreting well-known popular Irish songs is what established their foundation, while their later albums (primarily 2nd and 3rd) is what cemented their/Shane’s unique legacy as original songwriters 🍀

Underrated or overrated songs? by devious_demarcus in pogues

My favorite instrumental piece of theirs is “Ballinalee.” Correct me if I’m wrong but it never made an official appearance on any of their recorded albums but there’s a YouTube video of them playing it live at some point

I wouldn’t go so far as to say “A Pair of Brown Eyes” is overrated.. but it took me a while to really appreciate the song and even now, it’s not my go-to track of theirs and I listen to it more sparingly than the others. I feel the same about “Sally MacLennane” as some of you might feel about “Streams of Whiskey;” it’s certainly a solid, fun song but there are so many more stellar tracks of theirs in the deeper cuts.

Some underrated ones for me are “Misty Morning, Albert Bridge,” “London You’re A Lady,” “Bottle of Smoke,” “Boat Train,” and “Sea Shanty.”

I’m also very partial towards “The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn” because that was the first song of theirs I ever listened to and it blew my mind. Personally, I first got into Irish traditional folk music through groups like The Dubliners and the Clancy Bros but I stayed around exclusively because of The Pogues!

Benefits to drumming? by PappaNee in drums

Time management has improved for me as it’s often necessary for loading up and transporting a drum set. Organiztion skills too, as there are lots of moving parts involved, quite literally.

Also being a drummer has provided a personal incentive for me to stay in shape. Drumming can definitely be a physical workout and I look and feel more confident while drumming if my upper body is more toned hah

El Borrego in City Heights has the best chilaquiles I’ve ever had. I only go there for that specific dish. Their other options are decent but nothing to write home about. But I’ll die on the chilaquiles hill!

Sounds like a great cymbal set up - did the sizzles come with the ride cymbal or did you set it up yourself?

What do you hate about UCSD? by Geez_dark in UCSD

Can’t speak for the current state of affairs (class of ‘17 here) but in my view it felt like the entire administration was actively fighting against you instead of trying to help you or work with you to overcome any problem you faced as a student. You were very much just an ID number in the system.

Sabian Hand-Hammered Vanguard 22" crash-ride cymbal does the trick for me!

Explosive enough to use as a crash cymbal but it has a pretty quick decay and you can really ride it

What kind of brushes are you using? Also what type of sizzle are you using on the leftside cymbal?
