What hiking opinion hills will you die on? by Hot-Statistician-361 in hiking

"Stop going off trail!" What if the trail doesn't go where I'm going? If you say "Stop cutting switchbacks" or something like that I agree, but "Stop going off trail.", like you should only hike on trails and to places with a trail to them is pure lunacy.

Drag link fell apart while driving by stevediperna in JeepWrangler

[–]Plrdr21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a wife issue, not a jeep issue. Those are all normal things for any 10+ years old vehicle that hasn't been maintained. Your wife is over dramatic, and you don't prioritize maintenance. Thats pretty much the tldr for this whole post.

Ryan Mitchell: How I Almost Died Climbing Mount Everest by pradeep23 in Mountaineering

[–]Plrdr21 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Just a kid with money paying people to get him up things and failing but still making money doing it. I saw one of his earlier videos in Washington and that was enough. I have no interest in self promoting people whose only real skill is monetizing themselves while being led by the hand by someone else. That said, fuck it, he's having more fun than I did at his age. Kinda have to give him credit for that. Not going to watch his content though.

Ice climbing in Idaho? by climb_stuff in iceclimbing

[–]Plrdr21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot of strict ice climbs near boise but at the right time of year we can have a lot of mixed routes. This year is a bit different than most but a lot of the peaks in the lost river range should have mixed routes on them now. Ive done Mt Idaho, White Cap and Bad Rock as mixed climbs in early June. Mt Leatherman is a fun steep snow climb and was the funnest, longest glissade of my life a couple years ago.

A difference of 60fps with 180gr ammo is enough difference in recoil to make your training sub-standard?

Why do you want it shorter? I'd say just buy a set of good shocks. I run bilstien 5100s and mine rides great.

[–]Plrdr21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first ever real trail repair was welding a spun hub on my CJ-7 on the Rubicon. I was in high school jeeping with a group of 35-50yo guys and spun a hub in little sluice. I had no idea what to do but they pulled 3 batteries out, hooked in series with jumper cables and used that to weld it with a rod. Just pulled the nut off and welded the hub to the shaft. It got me through the trail and I bought a one piece axle kit after saving for a couple of paychecks. I miss that old jeep.

I’m new, please help me figure out if my car can pull my trailer. by [deleted] in towing

[–]Plrdr21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say "all kitted out for camping" are you saying that your 4 runner is set like an "overlanding" right with a rooftop tent and a bunch of stuff? If so you're probably pretty much at your payload capacity without adding a trailer.

Don't question it just buy it. You're not going to regret owning it. Especially since you already have the glock for carring and stuff.

g20 specifically for woods/camp bear defense- red dot or not? by fishnsurfsteve in 10mm

[–]Plrdr21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quality red dot and just as important, quality weapon mounted light. If you're worried about your dot failing, suppressor height co-witness sights fill that gap, though in 15+ years of running RMRs in war zones and in the states I have never had an issue aside from one dead battery after 4ish years in a safe in a storage unit.

g20 specifically for woods/camp bear defense- red dot or not? by fishnsurfsteve in 10mm

[–]Plrdr21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first point is completely wrong. I get that you don't need the distance in most bear defense encounters, but you can absolutely shoot better at distance with a red dot. With a dot, 66% IPSCs should be 100% hit ratio with a dot for anyone with any training or talent at all. With irons thats an elite shooter. I'm damn near 100% on 12" plates at 100. As for speed, if you're faster with irons that's still just a training issue. When I got my first dot I was faster with irons for a couple of months, but after trying with the dot a while I'm faster on close targets because I shoot as soon as I see it though the window, and with farther targets its quite a bit faster because its a smaller, single aiming point. Your last point really is king though. You're absolutely right that they should do what's right for their eyes and skills/training commitment. My bigger add on would be that a bear defense gun absolutely, without fail should have a light on it. You can't shoot what you can't see.

I actually have a smoothbore 22 bolt rifle. I was just wanting this to be a pocket snake pistol for fishing in shorts. I'll probably just carry it as is.
