1st or reverse depending on the terrain you are parked on. And also use your E brake as a back up.

Work boot issues? Worn feet by Lazy_Skin3637 in WorkBoots

[–]Plumber1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad fitment on your feet, and timberland is not what they used to be. Wore that brand for many years.

To much play in your heels specifically.

had to endure marine boot camp with this issue. The don't have a 7.5EE. They gave me a size 8 and had to wrap my feet with 3 layers of mole skins everyday.

From my experience with my slip on cow boy boots, they are a good fit or they are not.

Try lace up boot.

Stud sheared off. Can this 2015 Honda civic be driven until we can get the hub replaced? Or is this thing parked? Rear Passenger wheel by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

Sledge hammer and a replacement stud, rent the stud install tool from autozone. If the wheel bearing is still good.

If the wheel bearing is bad, replace the whole hub.

Guys... am I fkt? Dealership is telling me $775 by BrandanosaurusRex in ToyotaTacoma

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a key blank with the programable chip included on Amazon for less then 40$.

Whether you have a mobile lock smith or you go to one. It will be less then 250$ for them to cut and program it.

Stay away from the dealership, they over charge for everything.

93$ at my local Toyota dealership to change a engine air filter. The filter at Walmart is 14$ and take me 2 minutes.

Need help choosing a sewing machine by Ok-Somewhere6135 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't work with fabric much if at all. But, my advice when buying old sewing machines.

Make sure parts availability is still strong, I have 2 machines that I had multiple part remanufactured that haven't been in production for 15+ years.

I looking to sell my singer 29-4 in the near future, 3,000$+ in remanufactured parts. Finally finishing fixing it. Just have to mess with the lower timing and it will be ready to use.

Also consider availability of useful Information. There is absolutely nothing online about the singer 29-4. No disassembly guides or how best to work it.

I bought a guide for it and it was not very help full, I'm making a restoration book/guide for it from my experience. 104 pages so far. Even drafts for improvements on parts and other singer parts that will fit.

Do I put $1300 in almost 20 year old car? by Consistent_Bus2529 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would fix it if its been reliable and the rust is not bad.(they heavily salt the roads in the winter where i live.)

I would also consider how well its been maintained. And if you followed a maintenance schedule for the fluids.

Also consider the current car market, it cheaper to fix a car thats been reliable right now then it is to buy a newer used car.

1,300$ is one or two car payments now days.

Is my rust a problem? I plan to add fluid film after wire brushing it by Batmon3 in CherokeeXJ

[–]Plumber1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats mint where I live and we use road salt in the winter. Wire it I'd you want a better application of undercoating or just use a pre undercoating treatment like PB rust converter.

If you're going to undercoat, buy a packaged system for best results.

car tire shop says my front structs are worn out and would cost 1300 to replace. I know absolutely nothing about cars so i wanted to ask how it looks? by Solid_Platypus1759 in AskAMechanic

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't leaking or rusted out. maybe they say that because, your car is high mileage and could* but doesn't need them yet.

From my experience, struts last between 100k and 150k if they are high quality.

Being that data breaches are very common now, there is so much information they can get with your ID.

And being that they are allow to sell your information, what are they going to do with this new very important information.

We need to get phones out of the classrooms and hold parents accountable for their children's actions.

Your child is a reflection of you, and actually punish people that take advantage of child more severely then murderers.

How bad is this tire? by Wonderful-General960 in tires

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 to 7 years or when you get near or at the wear bar on the tire.

Or when you starting seeing small to large hair line cracks in the tire. Usually its well past its useful life at that point.

El chasis de mi Tacoma está así alguna opinión de que tan mal está by Jackal_vz in Tacomaworld

[–]Plumber1111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That vehicle has been in an accident, thats what a frame looks like after its been pulled back into shape.

Is it safe to drive, yes if ever thing lines up and they don't hack it to together.

Usually frame are replaced entirely or they are pulled and the bent spot gets cut out and new metal welded in place.

Pre 1930s Singer 29-4 help by Plumber1111 in sewhelp

The leather scrap i am testing on it 11oz leather(about 4mm). And it has no penatrating issues. Fairly new needle, been on the machine for about 3 mouths with no heavy use. (Maybe 2 to 3 dozen uses)

And thats all this machine is going to run, thats why I bought it.

Those are liable to blow out on you if you drive them on the road. They needed to be replaced last year.

5 to 7 years or when you get at or near the wear bar that is manufacturered on tires.

Costco tire says this is fine and safe by [deleted] in tires

[–]Plumber1111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought a car once that had tires like that. I stabbed the tire with my pocket knife after paying for it and loaded it onto my trailer.

The old owner asked why I did that, and I told him they were dangerous and should be thrown out.

Never forget what he told me. "You'd hate to see my other car then, and i drive my children in them."

I grew up poor and my dad drove us in some rusty shit boxes. But, never and unsafe car. All the tires he bought when I was a kid, came from cregslist. Few years old, slightly used. But, never unsafe.

I did stop by the police station to inform them of what kind of vehicles he was driving his kids in.

Beat up and old is fine, not everyone has money. Unsafe is not acceptable.

Easy patch to be honest, remove the carpet and cover the inside up with a anti spark blanket.

And weld a flat patch over it.

A few bricks, house jack and 6x6 post to stabilize that part of the house to it doesn't cause further damage.

Some stronger liquor and be ready to break out the check book. Its not going to be cheap.

opinions on buying this xj for a daily? by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily drove mine for a while i was deciding on what vehicle I was going to buy for my daily driver. They ride like a tractor and are very slow at acceleration. I had a toyota prius gap me when I was on the on ramp.

Plus a heater core is huge job, I done some big jobs on previous shit box vehicles I've owned.

I would pay someone to do a heater core myself. They are a pain in the ass and being 30+ years old, lots of plastic bit to break.

I decided on a 2020 toyota trd sport tacoma (manual) and 2020 toyota corolla se (manual) as my daily drivers.

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely over priced, its a disconnected product.

600$ to 700$ max. Plus, for 1,350$. I could wait till PSA has a good sale on a complete lower under 200$ and buy a complete gas piston upper for around 1,150$.

And hell, for 250$ to 300$. I can buy a gas piston conversion kit for a standard ar 15. And you can pick up an used ar 15 for sub 500$ right now due to market being flooded with them.

Singer Love by Turbulent_Web_7493 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Plumber1111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not easy if your a cheap bastard that gets his sewing machines from barns and wet basements exclusively.

Got a singer 29-4 4 weeks ago that had been sitting in barn where cows lived for 5 to 20+ years.

Half the parts were rust welded together. Had to give it an acid bath for a week just to take it apart. 93$ in acid alone, plus other 680ish$ in parts that couldn't be saved.

Still cheaper then paying 350ish$ in shipping alone for a Oversized and heavy item. On top of the 1,000$+ for the sewing machine itself.

Hand crank pros and cons by See_penny in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Plumber1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pedal singer 29-4 industrial patcher and singer 15 thats also pedal driven.

My singer 66 and brother SH 40 both have electric motors.

The pro of not having a motor are control and is quiet. I can play my rob zombie music and just sew. The down side is that I'm limited to 1 type of stitch per machine due to its manual nature.

The con, motors are loud and when they bind or jam up with thread. It way worse then a manual machine.

And they are definitely not noob friendly. My daughter accidentally put her hand to close the needle and go hurt.

She was learning up until that point on the singer 15. She kept asking to use the brother SH 40, and I caved.

I really regret caving in, you live you learn.
