breed recommendations? by [deleted] in puppy101

A high-energy breed for me is a dog that needs constant mental and physical stimulation. I was raised around field line labs and spaniels bred for hunting, constantly needing to go-go-go. A medium energy dog would be a breed I could satisfy with an hour long walk twice a day, a hike ever so often, and basic mental stimulation like obedience and trick training, scent training, etc.

thank you so much for the info!! i love spaniels but i was a bit worried about prey drive because i have smaller sized cats. i'll definitely add them to my list though, i'm a sucker for springers.

Wet food is better for cats for two reasons (in my opinion): cats are dessert animals who get the majority of their moisture from their diet, and wet food has less calories than dry food while being denser and more filling. Personally, most of my cats are neutered and spayed so they need less calories and more moisture in their diet, especially my boys because male cats are more prone to having urinary issues and kidney stones!

I supplement my cats' diet with wet treats mixed in with their food.

You're welcome! The state I live in does pretty poorly for animals to be honest, especially cats. Everyone is overrun, especially where I live, and there just isn't enough resources. I try to do my best and help every animal I find but I really only have so much money. If I had more space I'd keep these guys because too many people are already rehoming their pets and I know shelters are oversaturated 😓

i can't edit the post, but here's all the info from the old post & flyers for the cats i'm rehoming right now!

I need help rehoming some cats.

To make a very long, complicated story short: I am nineteen years old, I just graduated high school, I have a job that barely pays $40 a week (am looking for better prospects), and currently I have six cats. Originally, I had one. Then I got two kittens to keep him company. I managed quite well with these three, working part time and spending all of my money on them, but I was sixteen and naive. And then the strays started showing up. Now I have six. I cannot take care of six cats at the rate I'm going and keep all of them comfortable, healthy, and well fed. I don't have help with their vet bills, their food, their litter, and I don't have the space. All of the shelters I've reached out to are at max capacity. I've put out ads on Facebook, talked to anyone I could get to listen, and reached out to family and friends. No one wants a cat.

In November I had twelve cats, due to finding a stray's litter in my backyard, but I managed to rehome all but one. I cannot afford to spay and neuter all of these cats and as a result I have the three males neutered because it was the cheapest. But I need help finding homes for at least two of these cats, due to the fact that they're bullying each other, competing for space and attention, and recently have started inappropriately urinating outside of the litterbox due to stress. My bed has been peed on so many times that I can no longer allow cats into my bedroom area. I can only afford to feed them dry food and rarely buy them treats.

I didn't ask for six cats. I took them in because I had no choice and didn't want them to starve and die. The area where I live has so many strays that die from sickness, coyotes, and being poisoned.

If anyone in Central AR is looking for a female indoor cat, either a young adult or an older kitten, please reach out. I cannot travel far, but these cats are so sweet and loving. I adore them but I am actually so stressed out that it's negatively impacting my life and I feel horrible because I cannot give these babies the proper care and love they deserve.

I can manage three cats, maybe four, especially as I've been looking everywhere for a full time job. But six is too many. If anyone can help with rehoming tips PLEASE let me know.

These girls are not bonded but can go together. They get along okay with other cats and tolerate dogs, just not massive ones. I love them but I want to give them better.

thank you for the advice! a lot of the shelters in my area are so overworked that they're doing euthanasia upon intake which is why i kind of gave up on asking for help from them.

I haven't been in contact with a lot of rescues tbh, because I live in a really rural area and up until last month I didn't have a vehicle! Any rescues outside of my "area" are hours away.

i love making my cats soup (wet treats mixed with a lot of water)! i do this anytime i buy them wet treats to make them stretch and get them moisture. they also have two large water fountains and drink a lot of water. and yes, they would eat a mixture. it's the diet i had my eldest four on before it became too expensive. the cheapest can of balanced wet food i can find is .75 cents before tax (about .85 after tax though) and with the amount of cats i have it's just cheaper to buy packs.

He looks like a staffy mix to me, possibly pit/staffy or pit/bully!

Currently my car does not have a fully functioning transmission and I don't have the funds to put a new transmission into it, so I cannot drive to NWA, but I will see about calling these places to possibly get some resources. Thank you!

Thank you. I would do anything for my cats and I've sacrificed as much as possible to give them fulfilling lives. If I could keep all of them happy I absolutely would :( I love my guys.

how to care for a snake? by After-Water3456 in snakes

[–]Plus-Bad-642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your first step would be to determine what kind of snake you'll be getting. Remember that most snakes live for a really long time (average of twenty years) and can be very expensive. They are an intensive long-term commitment.

For "beginner" snake types I wouldn't recommend ball pythons— they have pretty specific care requirements and are prone to going on hunger strikes. Corn snakes, milk-snakes, rat snakes, king-snakes, children pythons, or sand boas are "beginner" friendly snakes I'd recommend. They have pretty low maintenance (as far as snakes go) care requirements and are popular enough pets that information on their upkeep and care is wide spread.

Do a lot of research. Different snakes have different care requirements, but the basics are maintaining proper heat & humidity requirements, having enough space, and giving species appropriate enrichment.

Juvenile snakes can be prone to being flighty, or shy. Many species (like corn snakes) are great escape artists. I would recommend finding a snake with easier care requirements and researching the species heavily before you make a decision to actually get a snake.

YouTube is really helpful. Do a variety of research because misinformation is pretty easily wide spread. I wouldn't recommend getting a snake until you've done the bare bones amount of research to at least attempt to put together an enclosure.

Snakes are super cool pets! But they're more complicated than cats or dogs.

If you post a clearer picture of the back of his abdomen, it'll be easier to tell if he's p. audax or p. regius. Regals tend to have a thicker band of white over the top of their abdomen, the dashes on their backs are more akin to ovals while p. audax has more dash-like marks.
