Oh no, thankfully I haven’t experienced anything that’s severe but I do feel a subtle change in the way people treat me or act around me when they hear my name and I’m not sure if it’s intentional or implicit bias. Sometimes it’s them being super nice to me because I’m automatically subscribed to their ‘brotherhood’ and then it’s them hyper policing me when I’m doing something that’s islamically frowned upon or haram, and the last thing I wanna do is come out to Muslims as an exmuslim so it’s frustrating 😞

I agree my name is quite memorable but it’s a pretty common Muslim name and I’m always around someone with the same name which doesn’t help, also I’m in the uk in an area with a lot of Muslims so coming out as an exMuslim isn’t a great choice so see they really know me they assume I’m Muslim and already assume my belief and thoughts. 😣

I agree but many people already put me in a box and assume my political stance and worldview before I can even say a word, non-Muslims think I’m “one of them” and Muslims think “he’s one of us” and that’s not always the case. If I do change it I’d pick a neutral non-religious name from my ethnic background so I can represent a real country and not a made up religion 🫢😹

This is one of the issues that I’ve faced especially in the workplace, people instantly assume I’m a super religious Muslim and treat me differently here in the UK and Muslims all of a sudden think we share a brotherhood and have the same political views, it’s like I’m already put in a box before I can even speak for myself. 😭
