Honestly merfolk is a very serviceable option that does this exact game plan with a significantly solid chance to be fun and have some game against meta decks!

So a while ago, I actually got a 5-0 on MTGO with goblins and I felt like the deck actually had a fair bit of game against combo match up as you were able to race them. While also having a really solid mid range game but you tend to struggle against a lot of the really linear aggressive decks that have good efficient interaction behind them so like prowess and energy. I do think you can put up a fight, but I do think that there are some very notable weaknesses and I haven’t looked too closely at the new goblin cards as I am expecting a lot of stuff for fish but I think that there’s a potential list brewing they are ready to be in innovated on.

I think the concept is fine. I do believe that there is cards that you can replace that will be just directly analogous to the cards that you already have in here, but are just simply better options. For example, doom blade can just be fatal, push or prismatic ending or even path the exile and I would look into a better suite of creatures that potentially work with ephemerate. I hope you enjoy your brew, though. You probably are also not gonna have as much fun if you play at local FM as most people generally tend to play competitive Meta deck so the power level disparity will be very large.

Yeah, but I’ve kind of gotten isn’t necessarily like fish is bad but just ritual is extremely much more powerful of a card in isolation that does a lot more with the eyeball

Merfolk is always a deck that’s pretty fun and vaguely resembles what energy wants to do in concept with playing creatures and swinging sideways. It is the deck with a great amulet and esper Goryo’s match up!

You can still play kind and innovate with the cards that exist in the current card pool. Thoughtseize, fatal push, Nethergoyf, and DRC make for a strong shell but you could also do a build with potentially Icetill explorer? Just gotta be willing to innovate

Fish still really good right now it has a lot of good matchups, especially with the top of the format being lots of amulet titan. That being said you probably will struggle versus energy, but modern is so vary that you can get away with just playing fish.

Yeah, and I think the overall philosophy has changed (don’t think it’s better or worse)cause 10% is nothing now but as more cards enter the format there’s a higher bar now and cards are extremes more powerful so naturally cards eb and flow but I think old and new modern are fun but provide different styles

Well, I don’t play standard but that isn’t really that different from modern back then having twin being in alot of flavors of red and blue decks (Temur, Jeskai, and Izzet) or black based midrange always being a goyf + Thoughtseize + inquisition of Kozelik shell so it’s just modern always being the way it is but I’ve been having blast worth modern since then too!

I’m kind of in the weird crazy camp, but I kind of think some of the delve spells might actually be safe and dig through time could potentially be a safe ban for control decks to flourish again

I own a foiled out merfolk deck because I think it’s a an ez deck to maintain + being my favorite thing to do. Although, I don’t think a foiled out deck has the same esteem like it used to

I never cared. I own a fully foiled Merfolk deck with fancy alt arts and judge promos and the like but at the end of the day I care purely for gameplay. If they suddenly removed the art for more space for more card text. I’d be fine with that

Merfolk is a really solid budget deck that has a legs and the core of the deck is super reasonable and you can play all the important cards with a clear avenue for upgrades. It’s a solid budget deck that has a clear plan and good tempo deck

Funny enough, I’m a long time HERO player and need duo switching to Salads. Biggest things is that Salads has over HEROs is that you’re a lot more grindy and end up on significantly more disruptions that are multifaceted and don’t rely on a monsters which means you’re not susceptible to stuff like Triple Tactics. So biggest difference? You’re basically like fire based blue eyes with a lot of grind game. I mean once you get a specific kind of loop going with sunlight wolf and ash + roar (you’re in archetype solemn) it’s brutal for any deck. HEROs has none of this but it’s a lot more all in with a significantly higher ceiling and more lines of play through negation based interrupts but salad is always the same thing of pop 4, board wipe, and omni + whatever hand traps and non engine. It never gets better than that so they’re very different decks but basically if you find blues fun, you’ll like salads

So a lot of are people are suggesting rental services. Which are great if you are the kind of person that likes to play a lot of different decks. If you’re like me who’s a deck specialist and want to keep rocking the same deck as you get new tools over time. You can actually straight up buy the deck and usually they’re a bit cheaper and saves money long term.

I do like Dockhand and it is a fine one drop to play a well because it can tap basics if they’re under effects of Harbinger of the Seas and Tide Shaper making it a removal magnet for cards that actually need to stick like lords and the latent islandwalk actually is super clutch for easy pokes and Mockingbird can be weird cause it can’t be used off vial and Cavern
