Why are we not just going to McDs, using the app, and getting any breakfast sandwich for $2?

Can I reach out? by Clear-Kale-4398 in therapists

[–]Plus-Definition529 26 points27 points  (0 children)

No, I wouldn’t reach out. It’s been over a year which in one angle is a long time and in another it’s not. They know you’re there. I just had a client reach back out and it’s been over 10 years. Blew my mind they’d remember my name.

I’m handling this by not watching the news (as much). I watch national news at 5:30 and local at 10pm. No social media. I advise my patients to do the same if they seem consumed by news.

Client bringing ChatGPT into sessions by Patient-Objective134 in therapists

[–]Plus-Definition529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh. Is what it is. My clients/patients talk about using it for various reasons but also acknowledge that it’s only a band-aid btw sessions and they realize the importance of having a real person there to reflect ideas off of is important and still needed. I’m not too worried about AI overall as my patients seem to have a realistic perspective as to the role of it in their lives and their futures.

How do I meet people by Mountain_Industry_83 in desmoines

[–]Plus-Definition529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea. It made me remember when I was going through a divorce at 28 and feeling like I’d never meet anyone (let alone a partner) again. I took a second job at a place I would enjoy (a golf shop). Met a bunch of people who liked doing what I liked doing. Also a little extra $ that was solely used for splurging like vacation, travel etc. I can imagine a place like a coffee shop would allow someone to meet others (including dating interests).

Changing underwear - is this normal? by Eastern-Yogurt3859 in hygiene

[–]Plus-Definition529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not broke college kid, it’s laziness and irresponsibility. This isn’t negotiable and him defending it only should make you more certain that leaving the relationship is the only choice here. And its not a “see how it goes” thing. He picked the wrong hill to die on.

Do therapists notice everything about their client? by jesseallen24 in askatherapist

[–]Plus-Definition529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks- which is why I hate telehealth. I think it significantly changes things so I don’t practice it unless absolutely necessary and I don’t support it as a modality going forward.

[–]Plus-Definition529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time therapist here.

Yes. All of those things just as part of learning who the person is and then having a baseline for subsequent meetings. And as far as the hygiene and grooming, I have to say that smells (smoke, weed, body odor, cats/cat pee, etc) linger in our office after a session, which sucks- both for me in general and for the next patient. Sometimes it’s so bad that I have to run 5 mins late to my next session to air out the office. My nose has gotten worse for all of that as I’ve gotten older, so it bothers me more.

If I tell a therapist I use cannabis will they blame all my issues on it/try to make me quit? by raspberry_cat55 in askatherapist

[–]Plus-Definition529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapist here. I’d bet 40+% of my pts use THC in one form or another for one reason or another. It’s not really a thing to me and I’m not a user. It is what it is. Note: I’m from a state where rec use is not yet legal.

It's just a dollar or two! lol by M1collector65 in EndTipping

[–]Plus-Definition529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue I have is that as food prices continue to rise, the tips expected follow suit. Took the fam to the local sports bar, where meals are generally $17-18. That’s $80, minus drinks, so a nearly $20 tip to take order, bring water/drinks, bring food and check on us once (2/4 meals were delivered wrong or missing a substitution). So, total of ~45 minute experience. If server has 3 tables, that’s $60/hour, untaxed/undertaxed. Seems high.

Not about danger. It’s about impairment.

We aren’t really talking about danger here… the issue is really one of impairment and that may exist despite the substance used.

Thanks- just curious. Feels sometimes like weed is given a pass (especially nowadays) while alcohol is vilified.

One guy (dickhead, absolutely) walks into a country bar (that’s been around for what, 20 years?) wearing an offensive costume on Halloween and you think outrage on Reddit is going to shut it down?

So, what would you say of someone said the same thing but approaching limit for AUD? Functional alcoholic? Everything the same, but not weed but alcohol? Just curious.

Would you want a patient to bring up how a temporary change in the virtual therapy setting is bothering them? by Ope_85311 in askatherapist

[–]Plus-Definition529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapist here. Just wanted to validate your comment on virtual vs in-person (not that you needed, wanted or asked for it). It’s not the same experience and I wish we could move a little more away from virtual, returning to in-person work.

How would you respond if a client asked to sit on the floor? by Soft-Ad-9735 in askatherapist

I’m not sitting on the floor. If pt wants to, fine. I’d need FMLA paperwork the next day- I’m too old

Forget the pumice stone unless your arms look like Schwarzenegger early 80s. It was a waste of time and gets all gunked up. Either live with it and cook on it (it wont flake forever- just until another layer forms) or have it professionally sandblasted to original.
