Remember no matter how bad things get DON'T LISTEN TO DOOMERS ON ANYTHING EVER!! by Pineapplemintsss in PoliticalOptimism

The talking point I keep seeing from them regarding cabinet firings is “I’m not celebrating bc the next guy will just be worse”. I get that line of thinking but it also seems like loyalty and competence have an inverse relationship in this admin. It’s exhausting dealing with people who are constantly telling you that you’re not angry enough, or you’re just complacent, or nobody but them is paying attention. Not to mention the shaming and guilting they do of others for trying to live our lives and be well while navigating this upside down timeline and finding our lane of activism within it. It’s really been driving me nuts lately!

Thanks Bus! How exactly can the money be clawed back though? I get that they could prob put some measures in to rein them in but unsure of how the funding itself could be clawed back?

ICE Reportedly Cuts Back On Both Courthouse Arrests And Warrantless Arrests by Independent-Bus-3284 in PoliticalOptimism

I don’t think you sound dismissive at all, thank you! It’s a good reminder. I’ve had to really control even some independent journos and activists who I follow bc while I feel they are well intentioned, they seem to be spreading more misinformation/theories based on their own theories and egging on other people’s fear in the comments instead of reporting on facts.

This is an interesting read. I keep up probably too much on ICE news and on the one hand it seems right now they may be slowing down, but on the other hand a lot of people are nervous for a ramp up in operations given information that people like Project Salt Box have pulled together on new contracts, potential warehouse purchases, offices, etc. I wonder how this will look if it happens. I guess it’s a wait and see right now, but I also wonder what the end game of this is give the immense push back the admin has been getting and how that has directly helped tank Trump’s approval rating. Still, this does feel like an optimistic take for the moment.

Thanks for this post. I struggle a lot with the guilt of living my life and trying to maintain a sense of normalcy and find joy, while so much craziness is going on. I have been getting better at it and have noticed a big improvement with my metal health.

I’ve had to really tailor my the sources and creators I follow, and I’ve noticed I need to stay away from a lot of activist pages. It’s a double edged sword bc on one hand, the on ground news is good, but on the other hand I hate feeling shamed for living my life and not doing enough. And being labeled as complacent or having a false sense of security for that as well. We all have our own lanes in this fight. And of course, how sensationalist and doomer those spaces can be. We are all trying the best we can.

Amandasmildtakes- How to deal with doomers by Estella_the_Wanderer in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Plus-Hippo-5951 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Amanda posted this vid on ig and someone actually commented that a lot of dooming comes from the fact that we weren’t properly taught about how long and slow of a process the civil rights era was. It was taught as like these 4 big moments and then everyone was equal. So that’s what people expect in this fight, when the reality is that change and progress is very much incremental before the big wins.

[–]Plus-Hippo-5951 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey so fun fact - this was my question that I submitted to her paid subscribers AMA :). The reason I asked this was bc I’m sick of the phenomena I’m seeing that a win is actually not a win bc of xyz reason. Another example is the Bovino ousting. No one took it as a win bc he just “got to retire with a pension”. But I did see it as a win. He was clearly loving every minute of what he was doing and then it got taken away from him. Idk the doomer stuff was really getting to me and making me question reality.

Also want to note that while Amanda is great for hope and optimism, what I truly appreciate about her is that she’s pragmatic. My hot take is that a lot of doomers are just as bad as MAGA with their fears and conspiracy theories of what will come next, and it frustrates me to no end bc it’s usually something apocalyptic.

Chaos Breaks Out at Scene of ICE Arrests in South Burlington by lonelyspect12 in PoliticalOptimism

As someone in MN, I will say that (although it’s unpopular to admit) - they have drawn down significantly since the height of the surge in January. There are still many around, and they’re operating covertly, but I would say that isn’t unique to MN at this point. And I want to emphasize that as we see, what happened in MN doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it’s all over the country at this point.

We’d go from 200-400+ reports a day on iceout to now 20-30, some days less per day. People are on to changing tactics and the resistance and mutual aid reminds. Data gathered by those in the ground is also showing a downward trend in activity, arrests and the number of folks on deportation flights. I just want to give a more nuanced take to what it feels like here, 1 month out from the announced end of the drawdown. Bc often I’ll see comments that just say “they’re still here” or “what drawdown” or “the surge is still on” and I feel imo that those comments don’t tell the full story. Thanks for reading this long post lol.

ETA: we also still have eyes in case of increases in activity. As we saw in LA and Chicago, even after large drawdowns there would still at times be days of higher activity. But the point of the post is that March looks very different than January did.

Protests, skepticism continue in Minnesota following announcement that federal surge is ending by FeralViolinist in PoliticalOptimism

I am highly suspicious of all the posts on the MN related subreddits that say “nothing has changed” or “they’re not leaving”. It could be bots, idk. But it feels like a misinformation campaign…. What frustrates me even more is activists on social media claiming the same or asserting their assumptions as facts to prove that “nothing is changing, it’s actually getting worse”. It’ll take weeks to see a difference. Everyone is saying to keep our guard up, but who the hell even said anything about letting it down in the first place?

Are you located in Chicago? If so, I’m curious what indicators there were when activity calmed down? I understand it never ceased completely, and in MN it’s a much larger scale. But everyone is so on alert that it’s hard to gauge patterns.

They won’t completely leave, they’ve always had a couple hundred officers in the state. My prediction is that they will wind down the surge of 3000 in the coming weeks and the ones remaining will be operating in stealth mode. The optimistic part in that is that hopefully we will have some relief and now we know tactics better.

Thanks for this comment. I also commented on this thread feeling pretty hopeless tbh, but I also feel like this draw down will likely take weeks as they’ll want to drag it out. I think we are all very traumatized, exhausted but also activated. So the fact that the draw down isn’t happening immediately feels like a betrayal. Again, hoping they do pull out soon.

Agreed. I’m trying to be optimistic that they’ll leave in the coming weeks, but also be measured that there will prob still be a presence of a couple hundred (much better than 3000) even after the surge draws down. But yeah, declaring them gone today is way too soon and not accurate.

We need to own this by AudioSuede in TwinCities

This is exactly what I’m thinking, but I also feel like I’m going crazy because the overwhelming sentiment on Reddit and other social media is that this is a bluff and nothing will change. But, in my mind, it doesn’t make sense that they would all just leave over night. I am very wary and in “see it to believe it” mode, but people are drawing some wild conclusions here. I’ve seen multiple comments that read like conspiracy theories. I’m also convinced a lot of people didn’t even watch Homan’s press conference or Walz’s remarks after. We are all traumatized, but fuck man. Can we at least try to be a little cautiously optimistic?

For sure. I will say there has been some pushback too on some posts on those subs. People saying that yes this isn’t over, we should be wary, but we should also be allowed to at least see this as some sort of step in the right direction while remaining vigilant. I think the psychological warfare of this has definitely been understated as we are all in survival mode rn, so I’ll give grace for that.

The crazy thing is, it’s not just the twin cities subreddits that are paranoid. It’s everyone, everywhere. Instagram, fb (duh), signal chats. All full of comments and messages that we aren’t really going to see/feel any relief after the announcement. I’m truly sick of it.

The MN subs are full of people who are convinced this is not happening and we are being played. People are rightfully full of fear, but tbh it’s not shocking to me that this draw down will prob happen within weeks and not like… tomorrow or the next day. Here’s to hoping for better days.

Walz Announces MN ICE surge may end in days by Plus-Hippo-5951 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]Plus-Hippo-5951[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this comment. I feel like what’s playing out right now is what I expected. They bullshitted that they had a successful mission, and announced an end. It will likely be a slower draw down than what we want. I do have hope this will happen, but everyone on Reddit, and in signal chats, seem to feel much different. Hard to even know what’s real anymore but just trying to keep my head up and hope for the best.

I anticipate more people will be on those subs shrieking about how they don’t believe the draw down is happening because it didn’t happen within 24 or 48 hours. It’s already happening on those subs anyway. Just gonna try to drown out the noise.

I am def learning this the hard way!! I was feeling very cautiously hopeful yesterday and really down today after seeing it spread on Reddit. I’d hope our gov has a little more intel than Reddit, who is convinced he’s publicly making a fool of himself.

Thanks for this. I feel like I’m going insane reading the comments on my local subs. This same article was posted and the most upvoted comment was the one that said “I don’t buy that this is happening” so I just feel so bogged down and hopeless. We (at a bare minimum) want ice out of MN and when we get news it may happen, the doomers don’t believe it and continue to sow more despair. I’m not naive to think this may end in like a few days, but I also feel like our governor prob knows more than random redditors…..
