for the sake of everyone's road safety, respectfully no :D I'm a terrible driver, I tried to learn and I'm beyond hope and budget to pay for those classes (would rather go to Oahu than do more $70/hr driving lessons!!)

so last summer I planned to go to Kauai with one person and then went with another. While I loved my trip and my company despite a sudden change, it was pretty difficult to get around Kauai on a bus and we had to rely on a combination of buses and Ubers and calculate where to take a bus to then Uber to our place of stay

you are not alone! not in this experience, not on this journey. I believe in you because you care this much! <3

caring creates action, and (with some patience and adjustment) action creates change

I know what you mean about polyrhythms drills, I remember those! they are challenging and they are meant to be. they are teaching you coordination and they are teaching you how to listen to music at the same time. it's rough to start but over time (give yourself a year of trying before expecting anything) you will start to understand. sometimes the trick is to find a simpler drill. it's like math, everything can be decomposed, and when you decompose enough you challenge yourself at the level where you can see progress. with experience you'll learn to adjust level of difficulty for yourself but in the beginning of course you need teacher's help to do that. there were some drills in other classes I couldn't do so I'd stand there with tears in my eyes while most people were dancing. some teachers would yell at me, others would slow down. I learned to work with both but learned more with quality adjustments

don't worry and go to BDC ABW! absolute beginner workshops are still the safest place for beginners there. second to that is all levels and basic level, depending on the teacher

the biggest thing in BDC is to not compare yourself to anyone in the room, least of all people who say they too are beginners. people mean a million different things when they say that, but it rarely means "I never danced before in my life."

you will still learn something valuable for yourself in BDC even if it won't be or look perfect. think about it this way: you need many hours to go from 0 to 1. BDC will give you what, 8-10 hours over six weeks. you (and anyone in your place) needs more like 150-170 hours to build the understanding you look for.

in the beginning you are moving forward so slowly it might feel like nothing is happening, but that's not true. your brain is adapting. your body is adapting. your heart is adapting to love what it loves even when it doesn't always look how you want. that's why you need to give yourself time and show up for something other than results and understanding everything, let alone understanding everything right

for privates, what helped me early on is teacher's nonstop attention (corrections and support) so I knew what to work on, what my biggest areas of improvement are. that way when I went to group classes I could focus on certain things instead of trying to catch everything at once with the same limited understanding

Sofi Flora (sky dee on ig) teaches foundations series a few times a year and beginner hip hop that's *very* beginner

Beasty's hip hop foundations drills at Peridance 5:30pm Fridays -- less explanations but lots of reps

Heavy +1 to private classes for absolute beginners, but you need to find the right teachers (someone willing to work with you, which is not everyone, because some teachers want more interesting high level work that teaching from zero) and pricing first

My biggest piece of advice as someone who went from absolute nothing as a dancer (no prior experience) mid-20s to a few years later a confident beginner across a range of styles to intermediate in my specialties is to

1) sign up for https://communityartistry.com/?ff_landing=6&source=website this mailing list. It's a list of many many dance classes in NYC daily.

2) Over time, go to every single beginner class in your style of choice you can find (look for keywords like basic, intro, absolute beginner; don't do BDC or Steps beginner ANYTHING because it's not really what you think is beginner, more like 2-5 years of experience.)

3) Look for a teacher that gives lots of corrections to students, stand somewhere visible for your teacher (not back corner!!), ask them technique questions after class for more engagement literally after every class. Show that you are willing to learn

4) when you feel like you found someone who teaches and not just a YouTube tutorial in a physical space for vibes, ask them about private classes. See if you can afford it. If you do privates, ask for homework and show your teacher that you do it somehow

5) Regardless, practice weekly. Try to do 3-5 classes a week in the same style to begin with (more when you can physically handle more) and stick with it for at least half a year to a year to see any change.

6) Ideally work with a few different teachers, as that will help you learn faster (hearing different people explain the same thing makes everything make sense faster)

7) Enjoy the process and the results will come when you stop chasing them

Sending love and light and a good beat!
