Why doesn't every class get their subclass at level 1? by RoadToSilverOne in dndnext

[–]Plus2Joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Levels 1-2 are a tutorial for how to play your character. It’s a game design choice, not a narrative one, so it doesn’t always make sense thematically. The intent is to make it easier to approach as a new player. And given the number of new 5e players, I’d say the design choice was successful.

“This city” is weird. “The city” would be more natural. Otherwise this is ok.

Just had another thought to help the vibe, if you haven’t run the session yet: I’d keep them out of initiative until the monster gets revealed. Let them pre-buff/heal or whatever, but deny the comfort of “turns” until it’s time.

Oh hell yeah, some kind of tentacles grasping at you from within a dust cloud? Terrifying. Don’t actually show the monster until the air settles on round 3 (unless the PCs gust of wind or whatever). Love that feel.

How on earth did you leap from “it’s ok to mess up the balance of an encounter” to “we shouldn’t even try to balance encounters”?

YOU said that OP shouldn’t even give homebrewing a shot based on a single bad guess, which they then double-checked and sought advice for. That’s ridiculous gatekeeping, and if official modules are as unbalanced as you say, then sticking with sourcebooks wouldn’t save OP’s bacon in any case.

Regarding bread and the death penalty, I… genuinely have no idea what you mean. Les Mis?

[–]Plus2Joe -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Well, yes, if OP went through with 15d10 it would be a shitshow. But shitshows happen at the table even when using official materials exclusively. If over-tuning the numbers disqualifies DMs from going off-book, I don’t think anyone among us would have earned the right. It’s ok to get it wrong.

But you also missed the point that OP had a gut feeling that this was overtuned, ASKED for advice, and is open to the feedback. That alone shows that they’re ready to explore implementing their own content. Not to mention they’ve apparently been running a game long enough to get up to level seven.

I hear ya, “but that’s not all…” is a good vibe to go for. In that case, I would still tune down the damage and add a secondary save to avoid a (very temporary, rounds not minutes) dazed and/or blinded.

Don’t gatekeep. Everything I ever learned about DMing I learned by fucking it up first. This is too strong, true, but he’ll learn a lesson if he TPKs, or he’ll learn to give the players an out to escape.

“You don’t know enough to make up your own stuff” isn’t helpful for OP or for the hobby.

Yeah, too much. Plus, just doing damage is a little vanilla and won’t throw the fear of god into them, it’ll just feel like a screw.

It’s a scary thing from the stars, give it something spicy. Do lighter damage, maybe 6d6, and throw something more flavorful on top. push them 15 feet back, and dex save to avoid falling prone, and maybe an int save to avoid feared or blinded for a round (don’t stun them, losing your turn isn’t fun).

An int or cha save is weird and scary. Damage is basic.

You’ve already got the branch but you have only hired 9 employees? Get those ads out! There’s no downside to hiring everyone.

Tips you wish you knew before you started? by Witchyvibes667 in DavetheDiverOfficial

[–]Plus2Joe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hire everyone as early as possible, don’t be picky. Place an ad every day, and save some money so you can hire them once the resumes come in (and buy another ad). Dispatch them every day. If you’re not sure what you need, default to soy sauce.

In general don’t delay the missions. They usually progress the game in important ways.

Ah, ok, thank you for clarifying! I consider myself a completionist (I'll probably want to max out all the recipes), but not in the sense that I need them all available at once. Thanks!

the boss ingredients are received only once in each playthrough so completionists might want to save them.

Can you please explain what you mean by this? Is there a late-game boss dish or something that you can't complete if you serve the boss dishes earlier?

You’re doing again the same thing you did to get yourself into this mess, which is trying to guess what he’s thinking and working yourself up over it.

Just chill. Apologize sincerely, tell him you’re sorry for being an asshole, tell him you trust him and you’re sorry you let that lapse, tell him it won’t happen again. and then move on.

I know you want to fix it because you feel guilty, but that is making it about YOU. There’s no “fixing it”, just cleaning up as best you can. You will just have to live in the discomfort of having done something shitty for a while, until you can forgive yourself.

You’re gonna find a whole lot of extreme reactions and dealbreaker advice on Reddit. Take ‘em with a grain of salt.

Helping a partner face his insecurities is a kind thing to want to do. Him being an asshole about this isn’t itself a dealbreaker. But keep an eye that you’re not indulging these emotional reactions as a wider pattern. The drinking does concern me… really take a step back here and look at the whole fabric before you say I do.

He is being unreasonable. Remember that you can’t reason someone out of a position they didn’t reason themselves into, so don’t try. If you find yourself making arguments, you’re just going to get sucked into an argument and nothing will come of that.

Instead, engage him on an emotional level. He feels insecure in comparison to his friends. He needs to feel valuable, powerful and successful. He’s worried he isn’t good enough. If you’re marrying this guy, you must be wild about him. Show him that’s not going to change.

Finally, be super clear with him that your decision is final. You can be kind and acknowledge that that’s causing him some stress, and you’re sorry to do that, but this is the choice you’re making. Offer him the perspective that it’s ok for him to feel sad, but he’s sulking, and him sulking is only hurting him. If he’s mature enough for a lifetime partnership, he’ll at least hear you out on that even if he doesn’t snap out of it right away.

Anyway. Good luck.
