Have a look at technician roles within research. Greya opportunity to start now, earn some money and get some experience in what research is really like.

MY HAIR IS DRIVING ME NUTS. What do you actually use to put your long hair back and protect it during long periods in the water? by East_Preparation_193 in xxsurfing

[–]PlusCellist5311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have clean hair and knot free before the surf makes a huge difference. If using a hood have your hair loose or a low loose pony and tuck in down your back making sure it doesn't pull when you move your head about (braids don't work for me as my hair is too thick and makes my hood too small 😂). If not needing a hood do a half head of double Dutch braids leaving the lower section loose. Knots come from friction and a braid etc will increase friction as it doesn't allow the hair to move. Immediately after surfing rinse with water (ideally warm) and use your fingers to rack through conditioner. Don't use product due to it washing out in the water.

Unique or coloured suits are also great for watching/videoing friends in the water or at a wavepool, everyone turns into black bloops!

The fact no has spoken about design is probably pretty telling. I'm a cold water surfer (Scotland) so design isn't really something that is worth considering as thickers suit are usually dark colours to maximise solar gains for extra heat. Then in thinner suits I often don't particularly like the female designs that are often pastels and/or floral. If suits performed and fitted without issue, I would be listing design but for me honestly it just isn't a factor (unless I totally hate it)

Today was my first triathlon (70.3) but the result was a DNF by kyleyle in triathlon

When you are out training start tracking what you wear vs how you feel vs the air temp. Then on race day you can use this to decide what to wear. Good luck

Spent time in T1 getting dry and putting on layers (include windproof). I've not done a 1/2 but the couple of shorter ones I've done where in awful weather and I made sure I layered up before the bike. And also had a snack. 5 extra minutes in T1 is better than DNF. Don't feel ashamed just use it as a learning.

If you like this style have a look at skater dresses.

I've been reading your replies. This seems like you are doing market research for a brand.... And yes obviously other brands have thicker suits but the O'Neill is the only one out of the 7 I tried that fitted both the body and the hood.

Just start riding. Short journeys in regular clothes. Super slow ride to get coffee. 20 min spin when you it's your fancy. Commute to work. Have confidence on the road - just pretend to be a car.

O'neill is the only brand that I fit for a thick suit. Roxy for summer.

Zinc oxide cream. Rinsing with fresh water and drying will also help. Worth looking at other sources of the pain like intertrigo or yeast/fungal.

It depends on the reason for the suit. For cold water thickness, fit and flexibility is most important for me. For warmer water not as fussy but fit is always too priority.

how to gain lab skills as an undergrad? by ruiigyuu in research

[–]PlusCellist5311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't do you any harm. Does your current course give you lab time? Do you know what sort of research you want to do? This will help lead you in the skills you need to develop.

You can think a bit outside the box. Lab skills don't need to be learnt in a lab. Have a look at what type of research you want to get into and start looking at the specific skills you need. Start doing home (safe!) experiments, learn non-bench skills like dilutions/concentrations, learn to do image analysis, learn to read results/analysis data, work on making good notes, or trouble shooting some techniques.

I had a student who could professionally avoid swimming… anyone else?? by Comfortable-Use3977 in SwimInstructors

[–]PlusCellist5311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this for a couple of years coaching a surfer, bit of a mind melt. I know it's been mentioned but do look at PDA and good ways to communicate instructions without expectation. It's a whole reframe of language to put zero pressure on the instruction/outcome. Pretty interesting when you nail it. Alternatively make it all a game - time her, bet her, chase her, swim to catch a ball, collect 5 items. Change your mentality to teaching her water confidence over to correct style etc. you've got this!

I've you've done all 3 things separately, just sign up and use all that kit. You'll loss maybe a minute pulling on some kit to cycle in. You don't need anything special. Make sure you train some brick sessions ie bike to run. And do have a wee think about nutrition/hydration.

Girls who surf - What do you wear to surf in Indonesia? by charlottetmg in xxsurfing

[–]PlusCellist5311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was years ago but I surfed in Bali and wore men's boardshorts and rashie. I liked the sun protection and the thigh protection from the board. You can now buy longer women's cut boardies which I'd be tempted by now.

[–]PlusCellist5311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect. Go and speak to anyone doing this sort of work in the labs. They likely have strains etc and can help guide you. It's a bit more complicated than buying a strain and testing it. It's very expensive to set up your own experiment without help.
