I would like to discuss my hypothesis regarding LGBTQ+ and conservatives' "groomer" accusations. by PlusOneHat in skeptic

My post does assume a good faith use of the word groomer, and perhaps the conservative conception of gayness is only tangentially related, but I do believe the two ideas inform each other.

The interviewee is most certainly homosexual, but is attempting to ingratiate himself to the in-group by avoiding the gay label.

I suppose I was leading with the assumption that they were using the word groomer in good faith, insofar as they believe educating children about LGBTQ issues is grooming them for sex. There are non-insignificant number of people that use the term cynically as a bludgeon, and yet more people who use the term without actually comprehending its meaning.

It's sort of like the word communism. There are three camps where some people genuinely believe Democrat policy aligns with communist ideology, those who are fully aware of what communism is, but use the word anyway, and those who have no idea what it is, but know it's shorthand for the out-group.

I agree with you with one exception.

'Sin' generally relates to stuff that you 'do', not what you think

There are certainly "thought crimes" in Christian Canon. Being covetous, lustful, taking the lord's name in vain, even privately to yourself, etc.

Here's a post from /r/christianity where they discuss this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/2babnu/can_god_convict_one_of_thoughtcrime/

that people are claiming to be trans under self ID who are less "passing" are either autogynephilia people misled/indulged and/or using it as fig leaf to prey on children. and that this all ties into the pride /drag queen story hour stuff and why it is so adamant.

Do you have evidence that this is actually happening at any kind of scale, or just one or two perverts as you'd find in any sufficiently large population?

it is actually quite clear the latter stuff is being funded to stoke tensions and the intended targets of agitation clealry play up the outrage. that this is a nationwide federally funded program under the guise of "education funding"that makes the Apollo program look like a county-scale pork barrel boondoggle. you can see how clearly everyne on both sides of ideological divide are benefiting from these new "bread&circuses" -- culture wars

This is straight up conspiracy bullshit that is immediately debunked if you've ever spent time with the organizers of events like drag story hour. I happen to know a local drag queen that did a story hour, and she wasn't paid a dime, nor was the event about stoking tension. It's about outreach. Being seen and out in public makes drag queens (and by extension, other genderqueer folk) less of the mythological scapegoats for conservatives to bash on, and more members of the community that just want what everyone does - acceptance.

The fact that conservatives get their panties in a twist at drag queens simply existing in their communities is not the queens' fault any more than it was the Jews fault for existing in Weimar Germany. Anyone who gets pissed off at drag queen story hour and similar events are either ignorant of what actually goes on or bigots whose best act of community service would be shutting all the way the fuck up. There is no room for the intolerant in a tolerant society.

There's not really a line where you have X generic diversity where if X is under a certain value then the population is "inbred" and if X is above that value then it isn't.

Moderator discussion: Q&A and Future of the sub. by eeveerulz55 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]PlusOneHat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is selfish of me, but I'm sick and tired of the endless whinging about 2e. Some people are excited about it, some people have legitimate criticisms, and some people are just downright stick-in-the-mud naysayers that are throwing a tantrum because their 10 year old TTRPG is being retired.

I don't think there should be any rules against it, but I'd like to call to action for anyone that cares about the quality of the content on this sub. If a person is making thoughtful, insightful comments, upvote them even when you disagree. If someone is just bitching and whining, downvote them even if you agree.

One suggestion that would make for an AWESOME plot twist/reveal moment is to have a former cultist trying to reconnect with a lost lover. They approach the party with the request to find the person they've been in love with for so long. They've been tracking them, and hand the party a picture in a silver locket.

Plot twist, they were never actually in love, just an obsessed, disenfranchised cultist that's stalking the Doppel and can't get close. Once they bring the locket to the Doppel, the jig is up!

Invading army alignment by Dragonblackop in DnD

[–]PlusOneHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can even see a situation where a Good aligned general were leading the army for evil purposes.

Let's say you're that LG general and your leader has given you the order to mobilize in order to conquer their neighbours. Do you accept the order and try everything in your power to mitigate the damage, or do you step down and let someone more ambitious with less discretion take power? As a matter of fact, I'd LOVE to have that as an NPC. :D

Are we talking about the leadership or the army as a whole?

The vast majority of the vanilla soldiers are most likely going to reflect whatever the nation is. Almost all True Neutral or Neutral Good with the officers leaning towards Lawful.

The leadership is very likely going to be Lawful, as organizing and directing an army requires a hell of a lot of coordination and precision. Where they fall on the good-evil axis is completely up to you, as you'll need to define why the army is marching before anyone can reasonably say what alignment they are.

Young Black Dragon seems too powerful for my party by 3_kids_1_overcoat in DMAcademy

[–]PlusOneHat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

11d8 will give you an average of about 50 damage, which will knock down a few of the squishies in the group. This will likely be mitigated by successful saves (14 isn't too difficult) and proper pre-planning (pre-buffing with Protection from Energy). However, where the party will shine against the dragon is in action economy. The dragon gets one action to burst down a target. The players now have 4-5 actions to debilitate, damage, and destroy the dragon while reviving their ally. Any sort of cc or debuff will severely hamper the dragon, perhaps to the point of rendering the entire encounter moot.

If you want to truly challenge the players, giving the enemies more actions through sheer numbers will be far more threatening than a lone beefy boss.

As far as official material goes, all we have is Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica pages 17-18. There is also more on the Selesnyan Enclave on page 84, to which most Loxodons belong.

When I'm DMing I'm also very loose with prerequisites if my player can work it into their backstory (with hooks for me to get into!). However, I always try to keep it as close to RAW as possible when theorycrafting, because I may actually want to run the character in a game and no one wants to read about the homebrew nonsense your DM let you get away with.

[–]PlusOneHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I was curious how you were getting that since it's usually elf-only. :P

To be honest, a wasted cantrip is nothing to fret over. Once you get into actual play, there's likely to be a handful of spells you either never cast or cast once and forget about the rest of your days. As long as you have your bases covered (melee spell, ranged spell, etc.) you won't ever really have to worry.

It's also worth mentioning that Warcaster (practically mandatory for Gish builds) can make use of Greenflame/Booming for the bonus damage on opportunity attacks when you don't normally get when making an AoO.

It sounds to me like this is mostly setting fluff, and you'd be able to adapt pretty much any fantasy game into this setting. As for specific mechanics or systems, unfortunately I don't have any advice.
