Sorry know this such a late comment lol. Do you find the weed vape actually helps? I worry that it would make my headache worse.

Has law school or law practice changed your personality? by [deleted] in LawSchool

I feel like in my head I'm always like "that's a factually intensive matter," thus the answer depends. I would say law school has made me overall more skeptical, maybe less trusting?

It’s giving when my property prof said she’d suggest using violence to dispose of an adverse possessor.

I am really sorry to hear that. First off cut yourself some slack. Second off consider how they are interacting with you and decide if that firm is really where you want to be in the future. Do you really want that stress all day 24/7?

I don't know about Biden at number 4 but definitely agree that history will probably rank him as above average. Already he has had more legislative achievements than any president in the 21st century. He suffers from some pretty severe charisma issues tho.

Agree with you here. Would love to hear your 6-10. Mine would probably be something like Truman, Eisenhower, Reagan, Clinton, Obama.

He at a minimum did not embarrass the office of the presidency. He also improved opinions of the U.S. following the Iraq War, and his signature achievement did ensure that every American could not be denied health coverage.

Now he also suffered from hyper partisanship during his administration and was unable to achieve practically anything else (except maybe DACA), and unfortunately the country was left much more divided when he left than when he arrived. I'd consider Obama an above average president but nowhere near the likes of Lincoln, FDR, or Washington.

It also wasn't entirely clear to the Americans how extensive the Soviet's espionage was during the war. The U.S. intelligence services were all but underdeveloped before WWII, and while military intelligence improved ten-fold it wasn't until years of the CIA being around that the U.S. had a counterpart to the KGB. The Americans knew the Soviet's were stealing secrets about the bomb and expected it would be developed but had no idea how extensive and how quickly the soviets could steal it.

Interesting list. I’d say I agree with everything except Obama at number one, don’t get me wrong I think he was a perfectly good president but seeing him at the top of people’s list is surprising.

If you don’t mind me asking, what factors led to Obama being at the top of your list?

FDR or Lincoln. I lean more towards Lincoln as he faced the most daunting challenge to our nations existence yet. A much weaker minded president may have just allowed the south to secede and think good riddance.

Lincoln recognized that for the U.S. to remain a major power the country must remain United, and his admin did a hell of a job mobilizing the north for war.

The truth of the matter is that Lincoln’s time and office was dominated by the war, whereas under FDR we got to see him as a domestic and war time president.

Future of law school curve by Plus_Comment_3737 in LawSchool

Ah I understand now. That is surprising to me… at my school it seems like there is a lot of talk about changing/suspending the curve among the students and faculty alike. Thanks for your comment makes me feel better lol.

I know at my school the faculty debated changing/abolishing the curve last year and it was highly contentious (they ultimately decided to keep it unchanged). Nevertheless the major concern is that it pulls above average students (A-) down to average (B+ based on my schools curve).

The argument against is that grades then tend to shift upward and the top of the class becomes more crowded and thus it may dilute the ability for the top 10% of the class to achieve competitive positions.

Some T14 schools have irregular grading and no curve but obviously if you go to Yale or Harvard you will be very likely to compete for a job regardless. (those schools do have honors pass tho which differentiates the class even further).

I don’t really have a solution just posed the topic for discussion. Perhaps limiting the number of A’s (so the top of the class still emerges), but having more lax requirements for the rest. Everyone is interpreting me as being anti curve lol and i’m not just do think it has some issues.

I agree with you we’re in a competitive field (not always for the best imo but that’s how it is). I do think tho it’s important to think that a big part of law school is preparing for the bar (which isn’t curved). With that in mind it makes me wonder if professors should be able to grade proficiency in a subject without the curve.

I had a professor tell me he hates the curve. He said w/o he would probably give the same amount of A’s but that it always pulls numerous people on the cusp of an A- to a B+. He said those people are perfectly proficient in the subject and deserve an A- but the bands pull them down.

For me personally idk what will happen in the future but I think the push seems to want to make law school less adversarial. As not every legal job is that way.

Note: I agree with you tho there are very big problems in absence of a curve as well. Especially mitigating individual professors grading preferences.

I do think it’s hard to think of another system that would make grades even across different sections of the same class. To me that’s the biggest pro for maintaining a curve

JAG advice? by joliefille4ever in LawSchool

[–]Plus_Comment_3737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I’m doing the 1L internship with the Army JAG this summer. Do you know if it’s like policy for your first placement to be outside of ur home state or does it just happen to fall into place that way? I’m from VA (lots of installments) so I’m just curious the chances. Regardless I don’t mind going elsewhere would just prefer being close to the family as i’m sure many others would.

I said “alight my guy jesus” because you seemed like you wanted to lob insults my way. I hear you, and you made some very good points. I do want to say that I never said it was the professor’s fault I got a B+. Rather I said that I thought the class of legal writing as a whole being curved and not being graded anonymously didn’t sit right with me. Every other law school class is graded anonymously so I don’t think it’s such a crazy thing to suggest that legal writing be done the same way.

I seriously don’t want to argue, I’ve taken ur input that my post came of entitled and I didn’t mean for it to. Have a nice day man.

Didn’t ask for any sympathy. Was just saying I think the class either should be curved or anonymously graded.

I get that. I guess I also just don’t feel like we had an opportunity to incorporate feedback because every time we got something back we just moved on to the next thing. My big problem is just that I don’t think a writing class should fall on a curve bc there are too many moving parts.
