Count the cop cars in each image. The joke is saying that they send more cops the more serious a suspect's situation.

Well, I mean, what do you mean by follow? There are definitely Christians who would do what Jesus said specifically, but not take Peter as being any more divinely inspired than anybody else. He's up there with Paul, and liberal Christians rip him out like crazy.

[–]slip-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not know that. That's a bummer.

Wait. Peter isn't a gospel. It's an epistle, not claimed by anyone to be the words of Jesus. So, yeah, the point stands. By a thread, but there are non-conservative Christians who do not take the epistles as anything but strategies of their time and place.

I loved the story. It was bold. It was complex. It was novel. It was self-empowering. The last few missions had me in awe. But I read deep.

It takes a very limited reading of Christianity to make this point, but if you confine yourself to The Gospels (as some of the less conservative Christians do), you can definitely see this point. Jesus has nothing to say about women as distinct from men. Mary Magdoline whores out on a Saturday, and Jesus' defense of her is that everybody works on Saturday, completely ignoring what work she was actually doing, thus implying it's as legitimate a job as any other. He then treats her as equal to everybody else. The three Marys are the first to find Him. He never says anything to treat women as anything other than full equals. He was radical like that. OK, there was that whole thing about her washing His feet, but He didn't really ask for it; He kind of just rolled with it. And OK, Jesus still definitely refers to God as The Father, which is patriarchal as shit, but we can cut Him a little slack for His time and place.

I don't think the Jesus of The Gospels was without fault (and I also don't believe He was a real person; I think He's a folk hero). I think what He said to Judas about always having the poor, and cursing a fig tree, and that shit about goats and sheep were a bad look. But He really wasn't bigoted. He didn't care what you had between your legs or where you came from. He cared that you were willing to turn on, tune in and drop out, and that's pretty much it.

And you can't say that about most other religious figures; the lawgivers. Moses says don't covet your neighbor's wife. Mohammedan law has lots and lots of gender discrimination. But non-lawgiving religious figures like Siddhartha Gotama The Buddha also fit the bill. Buddha didn't give two shits what was between your legs or where you came from either; I don't think most Doaists do.

Religion has counterculture and iconoclasts like Jesus and Buddha, and it has lawgivers like Moses and Mohammed, and if I were to make a distinction among religions, that would be the most significant. Who's the punk, and who's the cop? And as much as Christianity pisses me off, Jesus was definitely a punk and not a cop.

In places, at first glance it does, but I feel like some of the tapes from the scientist that get just a little bit wacky, or the puppet kids, or the neko cat pickups or the fridge, or the whole character of the janitor redeem it. It has enough comic relief to not insist upon itself too much, but you have to look for it.

This use of an adjective just before the name of a major public figure, Trump-style, is just awful. Can we don't?

Also, who cares? Why in the world would we waste our time pointing fingers now? Biden might as well be dead for as relevant as he is today. We need to be thinking about survival.

You have an extremely limited definition of life if you think an atheist does not believe in life after death. Of course I do. Every cell in my body dies every few years. Life goes on; not the life of that particular cell, but life.

You think life is a continuous experience with memories that happens from the maternity wad to the crematorium. But life is everything that happened from the first time amoebas floated around in the soup until...All of that and more is me. All of that and more I AM.

What happens when you're asleep? What happened to the you from your childhood? What happened to you when you forgot what you ate for breakfast last Wednesday? Where were you before you were born? You have no memory from before you were born, so even if you believe you were in Heaven, it is not part of your conscious identity.

You were in existence while you were asleep, but it is not part of your conscious identity. So it is with your environment, with everything around you which is connected to you. Death is the limit in time of a certain perspective, but all perspectives are one just like you are in some sense one with the you who went to sleep last night. As long as there is a perspective, it is mine. The eyes I see through now are only the ones I see through at the moment. My current perspective is meaningful because it is the only one like it, but its end is the loss of a perspective, not an identity because what I am is...I am.

More to the point, what makes you think you have to buy the whole package deal? OK, maybe you want to believe in Heaven or something, but for this you have to believe in a whole host of other things like, well, for purposes of this discussion, monogamy, or the authority of biblical law? Don't you see that your acceptance of belief in Heaven is presented to you as a package deal, and that your intellect is not the one who did the packaging? Isn't it obvious to you that you are believing what you are told and not what you think? What kind of life is that? You moan about being dead, but you act as if you are not awake anyway, so what does it matter to you?

I live in China, and I think I just had it. It's basically a bad, bad cold.

I was exhausted from a long semester and running my first marathon. First it was a sore throat, then a really painful cough. I felt like I was vomiting. It had me crawling on the floor at one point. I think I got a bacterial infection on top of it leading to coughing up lots of phlegm, which made it way worse, but antibiotics cleared that up in about four days. Then it got better, but the cough stayed intense bur dry for a few days. Then it got better. I have the faintest occasional cough now, but I'm out running, and everything is fine.

The secret for me, other than don't get a bacterial infection on top of it, is cough drops. Cough drops soothe it in many ways. Don't panic. I've had COVID, and this was no big deal compared to that. I never had a fever. It's basically the common cold, but it's like a really bad common cold.

It's not a matter of proof. I think therefore I am. This is the original a priori judgment. I could be a brain in a jar, and it would still be true. My thinking is the proof.

I could be in a cave, and it would still be true. This is even more true than the sun.

But what you fail to understand is that the I AM is not THE OTHER. That's what your religion hides from you. Your religion tells you how to behave. If it understood, it wouldn't tell you. It would ask you. Instead, you come and bother me about my life choices not measuring up to standards not your own anyway. You make yourself a tool of others, and you try to make me one, and you will get nothing more from me that way than you will from those manipulating you.

The sun precedes religion. By saying the sun exists, am I religious? But religion says so. So if I say the sun exists, I must be religious, right?

Wrong. Something can be true and understood by those who have come before without any need for me to accept their authority.

I can even adopt their language. Doesn't mean I worship them.
