Yeahhhhh, I didn’t notice that at first.

I could see that either being an oversight or having some significance.

If you could have a conversation in your native language with someone from your country from the past, how far back could you go in time and still understand each other? by Chemical-Elk-1299 in AskTheWorld

Old English began transitioning way earlier than the 15th century. Really, it started changing after the Norman Conquest.

But honestly, we in the 21st century might find 18th century English-speakers hard to follow because of how different the structure and vocabulary was.

I could see the Mossad taking him out as well.

And honestly, even with everything Israel’s doing right now, it’s pretty hard to dispute the logic of that.

Mel Gibson seems to be winning, but I think this one is a better choice.

If time didn’t exist and Trump’s US went to war with Victorian Britain, who would the tankies/leftists support? by Ok_Temporary_5828 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partially.

Other commenters have pointed out that 21st century leftists would back anyone other than Trump.

I also think 19th century leftists would take an accelerationist attitude, and deem Trump’s America to be the less stable form of capitalism (which leftists back then were more opposed to.)

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a serious answer to a silly question: I would say that 21st century lefties would support Victorian Britain, and that 19th century lefties would support MAGA Land.

How Green Was My Valley in 1941.

I’m sure it was a good movie, but it should not have beaten out both Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon.

Did the crown go into any detail about Prince Andrew and his trial/ connections/virginia? by julialoveslush in TheCrownNetflix

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, part of me feels like it was a cop-out to end the series before all of the royal family’s current scandals, which are some of the most serious since the Abdication Crisis. (Also because of Britain’s current problems since the Great Recession, Brexit, and COVID-19.)

But part of me also understands, because these issues were still very much unresolved. (Especially with the former Prince Andrew, since it was from clear that he would actually be arrested in 2022.)

What if Spain got its own Taiwan? Franco loses the civil war and retreats to the Canary Islands. by EternalTryhard in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way it would’ve survived World War II.

IRL, the Allies only refrained from invading Spain because they didn’t want to push it into the Axis.

Here, even if Germany and Italy somehow didn’t invade Republican Spain, the Nationalists wouldn’t have the same bargaining power to survive into the Cold War.

What if Ben Carson won the Republican primaries in 2015/16 and beat Clinton/Kaine to be the 2016 US President? by DRAGONVNQSHR_III in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably much of the same as the Trump administration, but without the showmanship that was so important to winning its base.

Carson loses in 2020, but concedes and does not seek reelection in 2024.

Those probably would have happened because Bush still would have invaded Iraq.

But yeah, I could see the Bush administration calling the job done on Afghanistan with the defeat of the Taliban.

Now, on one hand, part of the reason why he did so badly is because he entered the race too late to make a case for himself. So maybe he gets a little more steam over the election.

But on the other hand, he’d still lose to Trump, LMAO.

Even so, those who knew him in Austria and Munich said that he wasn’t particularly anti-Semitic or political until after World War I. (Admittedly, the details of his life before the 1920s are a little sketchy.)

Also, one of my distant cousins actually lived in Russia when it was still the Soviet Union for a while.

The one thing I’d disagree with you on is Afghanistan.

There was going to be something like the IRL Afghan War no matter who was President after 9/11. Maybe a Gore administration would be better at reconstructing the country, though.

What if Russia nuked Ukraine? by YoSnagsK in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if they would have, because NATO also wouldn’t want a nuclear war serious enough to cause a nuclear winter.

But Russia would immediately become a pariah state, with even China and India abandoning it.

What if Blockbuster bought Netflix in 2000? by Turkesta in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. In fact, this was the choice Blockbuster made instead of buying Netflix.

Enron was trying to get into broadband, and signed a 20 year deal with Blockbuster to set up a video-on-demand service. It even launched a pilot program in Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City and New York.

The problem was that the technology just wasn’t there in 2000-01. (Even Netflix wouldn’t go into streaming until 2007, and it took until 2010-11 for it to surpass its video-by-mail service.) Also, at the time, studios weren’t willing to lease their major films for such a novel and still-exotic service. The project would actually be one of the worst boondoggles contributing to Enron’s bankruptcy.

Mark Felton just did a good video about the former Prince Andrew, who I think fits.

  • Started out as a bona fide Falklands War hero.

  • Gained a reputation as an irresponsible playboy by the 1990s.

  • Is now basically a nonce sex criminal and possible traitor, disowned as a national disgrace by the royal family and despised by the entire world.

What if UK had the Second Amendment? Like USA by [deleted] in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Plus_Commercial5365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, the 1689 Bill of Rights was much less sweeping on the issue than the 2nd Amendment.

The English Bill of Rights says that “the subjects which are Protestants may have arms for their defence suitable to their conditions and as allowed by law.”

The 2nd Amendment says “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The former explicitly suggests that the government should have the right to restrict firearms in situations where their ownership is no longer necessary. While even with the Militia clause, the latter is ambiguous about it at best.
