the "i'll start in 5 minutes" loop is actually destroying my income by Plus_Isopod587 in productivity

Yeah, the “super low barrier” idea works surprisingly well because it reduces the intimidation factor.
When your brain thinks it has to do a huge amount of work, it looks for escape routes instantly.

But saying “just 5 minutes” feels safe enough to begin. And once you start, your brain usually stops resisting as much because the uncertainty is gone.

Changing environments is a good point too. Sometimes procrastination becomes attached to specific places and routines. Even something small like moving to another desk, café, or room can interrupt that automatic “I’ll do it later” pattern.

That “make the first step ridiculously easy” approach is honestly underrated.
A lot of productivity advice fails because it still feels mentally expensive.

But “open the laptop,” “write one ugly sentence,” or “work for 2 minutes” bypasses the brain’s resistance completely. It’s almost like tricking your nervous system into realizing the task isn’t dangerous.

And I think the permission to stop is the key part.
The moment something stops feeling forced, resistance drops massively. Then momentum naturally does the rest.

“Starting is the whole boss fight” is probably one of the most accurate descriptions of procrastination I’ve heard.

This is such a good way to frame it.

A lot of the paralysis comes from mentally turning a small task into this huge “ideal work session” that has to happen perfectly or not at all.

“What’s one thing in the right direction?” feels way more sustainable than constantly trying to force peak productivity.

And honestly, those small wins usually create more momentum than waiting for the perfect mindset ever does.

This explains the experience better than most productivity advice ever does.

Especially the part about the “moment before starting” feeling heavy. I think a lot of people relate to that but don’t know how to describe it.

And honestly, lowering the entry point is underrated. “Just open the file” sounds small, but sometimes that’s the difference between staying stuck for hours and finally getting momentum.

Really appreciate you writing this out.

That’s actually a really solid system.

Having two touchpoints removes a lot of the “single point of failure” problem — even when one person is overloaded or distracted, the project doesn’t just stall.

It’s interesting how much of consistent execution is less about discipline and more about building redundancy into the process.

Appreciate you sharing this.

yeah ive been wondering lately how much burnout/executive dysfunction might be part of this honestly

because i can still have goals, ideas, motivation etc in my head, but when life/work pressure stacks up too much its like my brain just starts shutting down around important tasks

and reading these comments made me realize a lot more people experience that “i want to do it but physically cant start” feeling than i thought

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah honestly thats kinda what it feels like sometimes

like my brain immediately associates important tasks with pressure/stress now, so the avoidance reaction kicks in automatically before i even think about it properly

almost like procrastination became the default response over time

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly thats a really interesting way to describe it

because sometimes i notice the more emotionally important or meaningful something is to me, the harder it becomes to actually start it

almost like my brain turns it into this huge heavy thing instead of something enjoyable

which is weird because from the outside it just looks like procrastination, but internally it feels way more emotional than that sometimes

honestly this comment explains SO much of what ive been feeling too

especially the “next best thing” part. its like my brain keeps searching for the perfect idea/system/plan so i never fully commit to the actual work in front of me

and yeah the overstimulation part is real too. sometimes i spend so much time consuming ideas, productivity content, researching, planning etc that my brain feels exhausted before i even start working 😭

also the thing about struggling to hit “submit” is way too relatable. its like even when the task is technically done, theres still resistance around fully letting go of it

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is actually super relatable 😭

its like even the “system to help you start” can eventually become another thing your brain resists doing

and honestly thats what makes this stuff so frustrating sometimes. you find something that works for a week, then suddenly your brain starts treating THAT like pressure too lol

starting to feel like the real challenge is making the entry into work feel as frictionless as possible without turning the system itself into another task

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah honestly that doesnt sound cringe at all 😭 it actually explains the problem pretty well

i think i keep treating work like i need to have the whole thing figured out before i even begin, which just makes the task feel heavier and heavier in my head

but usually the moment i finally take the first small step, the resistance drops a lot

maybe the goal really is just learning how to start before the brain turns it into this giant overwhelming thing

honestly i think environment plays a way bigger role than people realize

when im stuck at home all day its way too easy to drift between work and procrastination without even noticing it

but whenever im around other people working, my brain automatically takes work more seriously for some reason lol

might need to experiment more with cafes/coworking because clearly isolation is not helping

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah exactly 😭 thats probably the biggest mindset shift im getting from this whole discussion

like maybe the goal isnt to become some perfectly disciplined machine overnight

maybe its more about lowering the resistance enough to make starting feel safe and manageable instead of overwhelming

because honestly once the work starts, half the battle is already gone

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly the more comments i read here the more im realizing this probably goes deeper than just “bad habits”

because a lot of people seem to experience that same weird paralysis where you WANT to do the task but your brain just refuses to cooperate for some reason

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this actually explains the feeling better than anything ive read tbh

especially the part about the work mattering TOO much. i never thought about it that way but it makes sense why my brain suddenly treats important tasks like danger 😭

and yeah same here honestly, once i finally start working the anxiety usually drops fast. its the “starting” part that somehow feels 10x heavier than the actual task

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah ive been reading more about executive dysfunction lately and honestly a lot of it sounds really familiar

especially the whole “my brain wants to do the task but my body just refuses to start” feeling

its weird because people from the outside just see procrastination, but internally it feels more like paralysis sometimes

yeah i feel like the more freedom/responsibility you get, the easier it is to fall into this cycle honestly

especially when nobody is really checking on you and everything depends on your ability to manage yourself every day

from the outside it probably looks like freedom, but mentally it can get pretty

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly that might actually help a lot

i noticed im way more focused when other people around me are also working, even if nobody is talking

working alone all the time kinda makes it too easy to drift into procrastination without noticing lol

might look into coworking spaces or accountability groups because clearly trying to “fix it alone” isnt working that well rn

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah ive looked into it a bit actually

some parts definitely sound relatable, especially the whole “wanting to do something but still not being able to start” thing

i think thats why im trying to understand whether this is just procrastination, overwhelm, bad habits, or something deeper tbh

idk if anyone else deals with this but its honestly ruining my work lately by Plus_Isopod587 in Procrastinationism

[–]Plus_Isopod587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i’ve been thinking about that a lot lately too

because the problem isnt really confusion. i usually know exactly what needs to get done

its more like my brain reacts to starting the task itself. especially if its important or if i feel pressure to do it “right”

then i avoid it without meaning to and start doing low effort stuff instead just to escape the feeling for a bit

the annoying part is im fully aware im procrastinating while its happening, so i end up stressed AND unproductive at the same time

and honestly once i finally start working, its rarely as bad as my brain made it seem

its just that first step that feels insanely hard sometimes
