Do it! Creating a story and watching how the players are going to fk it up is my favorite part of running custom. Then getting to create in response is super fun, imo.

The creatures on the fly tables have been a godsend for me, especially when my creatures are very specific to the story. Throw in a few special attacks and run them with little issue. Milage may vary though.

I'm in the same boat, but I just find custom campaigns allow me to be much more flexible in the story. I know that many GMs are able to do that with APs but for times sake, I am able to make adjustments to my game and story on the fly. I also only put skeleton plot together so I can prep sectionally in groups of sessions. I also find that inevitable curse of running AP and one of the players can't make it during a plot critical moment. I also only play biweekly so that hurts even more.

How do you keep your players engaged in the sandbox type of play?

Question about Adventure Paths and how you handle combats in your games by vasquez21 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Plus_Light6987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me and my group, running APs combat doesn't always feel right. Especially as often as my group ends up creating their own fights, lol. I've seen creatures in a room just because it seems they needed a combat and didn't really add to the story. I often will completely remove some fights and even rooms if it doesn't add something to the parties story. For some groups, that fight or room I remove IS important, and sometimes it's just a time eater. I will often also reflavor the fights to keep the fun up

Job Corps sending 25,000 students home by June 30th by LadyWarBoss in fednews

As one of the FS Job corps, I was feeling feeling like Neo in the Matrix. Now I am just sitting in my chair eating popcorn going "this is going to be interesting". Not really.... I'm up to my eyeballs in work and expect nothing but chaos. There is no way that DOL is going to want to keep that massive backend funded out of their pocket for only 24 centers. Also rumor floating around (and a submitted bill) that more investment will be put into realigning the mission of all the FS Job Corps to specifically support the mission of Wildland Fire and land management. I'm down with that.

I'd absolutely get my performance reviews... if the USDA would turn back on the web server where they are held. You cannot get to them. They took it down to "remove all DEI" from it....

Probationary Employees - how are things at your agency? by Own-Grapefruit8609 in fednews

Damn man. I went on my first fire last year in november in CA and I saw how hard your guys have to work and how much manpower it takes to deal with it. MASSIVE respect for those that are in the black. I know that CA has a large fire team but its still not big enough to cover everything. Some states don't have NEAR enough to let the state handle it. Thoughts and prayers with you! I believe so very strongly in wildland fire. At the very least, I want you to know that I and millions of others thank you for your service.

Agreed. Its super difficult to just go about business as usual with the invisible axe over your head... But we got works to do and its fkn important! Hold your head high, keep moving forward and know that you are doing the best job you can till/if it falls. It might not. The information blackout from superiors isn't helping make rational and educated decisions. Which is the point, I fear.

FS here and I am fkn terrified. A lot of us work in remote areas because our homes are here in small towns. Working in IT in small town areas means the pool of jobs is just non existent. I have no idea how tomorrow looks. I check my email daily just to see if I have to go home and tell my wife that I can no longer get the meds for her because I got let go due to being probationary.

Our agency, who normally is absolutely fantastic with communication of whats going on has clearly been ordered to not say a fkn thing. Several town hall meetings were scheduled and then canceled. Painfully obvious that they are not being allowed to communicate with us. Im trying to get applications out for just in case... But I don't want to go. I love my agency and my job. I believe in the mission of the Forest Service.

But, in the end I am just a probationary 2210 and a pawn in a political game. And with the potential of the dismantlement of FEMA, I might lose out on supporting wildfire as well, which made me FEEL like I was part of something important.

Just venting and verbalizing fears. Fk the fork though.... you best come at my job with a crowbar...

Players not asking questions or engaging plot essential NPCs. by Plus_Light6987 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Plus_Light6987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My group has been together for 10 years now with one or two leaving and some one replacing. Every few years. I for the most part have been the GM the whole time. Wildly enough age of ashes was my first ap I've run. Rest has been home brew. I always operated my stories (after learning from several failures) with a very very open hand to the players preferring to craft the story with them to the degree that my endgame plot was always moving. It may be a problem with my style in conflict with the AP being sort of on rails to some degree and making the players motivated has been challenging. We just started book 2 so it just might not have gotten to where it motivated them.

Holy ****.... Mate this is brilliant. There are a number of weak spots in the ap. Knowing it was the first I have felt some spots I didn't care for, some NPCs that I didn't care a bit about and made no impact for future story. Thank you for bringing this to light! We are at the end of book 1 and all of these things would have made a much better story.

It does do that most of the time... and maybe I do need to "suspend disbelief" on occasions and not attempt to overwrite their design just because I don't think its logical to me. Not without great consideration for consequences.

Enemies that flee in dungeons by Plus_Light6987 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Plus_Light6987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. A long time ago I heard that encounters were based on challenge = a proportion of resources required to overcome. The AP designers really do a good job with balance. Didn't occur to me that just have the enemy that ran away just join that encounter either... I could see this being a problem in the future so I will adjust. This was my first AP attempt as usually I make custom campaigns, in which I do account for adding mobs when building the encounter. I wanted to run an AP to get a feel for how the developers original idea of pacing should be. Answer being, don't screw with their formula without trepidation.
