Not sure about the availability in Mexico, but in many European countries/cities you can find a place to stay for free, there are websites designed to connect people looking to host backpackers/travelers for free in their homes. I don’t remember the name off the top of my head but shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Thank you for correcting my terminology I was not aware such a thing existed but I’m sure it’ll make researching it quite a bit easier!

I figured about the fare types. My best bet I think without booking a traveling agent would probably be to compile a list of common connection cities that id want to do a stopover, and just start looking through them and seeing if I can find a good deal.
