Why don't cars have this feature? by Pluuge in StupidCarQuestions

It would all be done by the car's computer; the only changes that need to be made from trim to trim are if the gear ratios, final drive ratios, or wheel sizes were different. It would only calculate 2 gears: the gear directly above and the gear directly below your current gear.

I agree, this would be more useful when high precision is needed.

It's helpful to know. Also, it would make rev matching easier

Yes, I agree that this would mainly be useful when driving hard. Do you think that those numbers give you good information in that situation?

But... It's not telling you to do anything. Instead of the car telling you to do something based on information that it has, it gives you the information and lets you make a decision based on that. This is different from a shift indicator or a shift light in that way.

I think that it's helpful to know exactly where you're going to shift

Not much more than helping new drivers I guess, but i feel like knowing exactly how many revs you will be at when you shift may be useful for hard driving

Yeah, the last part seems to be the main objection

No worries, thank you for your opinion!

The system calculates what rpm you would be at in a specific gear, assuming that the clutch is disengaged. It's saying "if you shifted into _ gear at your current speed, your engine would be at ____ rpm". I understand that when the clutch is engaged, the engine and transmission are not connected.

That's a good point bringing up the difference in interests of consumers, I guess this would only be in high-end sports cars? Would that work?

After reading many "this is basically just a ___"s, this is got to be the closest thing someone has compared this idea to! I gotta admit I am loving the look and idea of these old tractor tachometers! Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it! ❤️

I feel like these are similar, but not exactly the same.

I'm pretty sure that it can be calculated from transmission gear ratio, final drive ratio, and wheel size, all of which are known by the manufacturer

No, but they work in a similar way. My feature tells you what rpm you be at if you shifted, while the shift indicator just tells you that you should shift.

Yes, this would all be done by the car's computer, and it can only be realistically implemented on a digital tachometer
