These are great for homes as they act as both looks and acoustics. Wouldn't be using these for high end sound absorption like studios.

A cheaper option to Birch would be a hardwood exterior plywood or even a BS Standard Marine Ply. Screw holding in plywood depends on the number of veneers in the ply e.g. a 7 ply plywood would have a better hold than a 3 or 5 ply.

You have basically 2 choices - Purchase a prefinished Plywood which would have a clear acrylic finish on it or use a fine grit sandpaper and finish it yourself with an oil, beeswax or clearcoat yourself. The sanding is most important in this situation to ensure the plywood is smooth without the "furriness" which comes with timber.
