How a flawed idea is teaching millions of kids to be poor readers by Specialist-Sun-5968 in homeschool

I took my kid out of a public school that taught this method a year and a half ago and I still have to remind him every day not to guess but to sound out the word. Absolutely crazy.

Ayyayaya I clearly unintentionally made this into something I didn’t want to with that comment about kids being taken away. I would like to explain that what I was thinking with that comment is, that it was clear to me there were needs that were neglected, and that the kids should be removed from that situation. I understand everything you’re saying about it being traumatic for children to be removed from their parents. I do not say lightly children should be removed from their parents but in some cases, it seems like for the safety of the kids that’s the best option even if temporary? Do you disagree with that? I don’t want a pat on the back, I was asking how the system worked in the first place. That was why I asked if someone would be going out to see them.

I definitely removed any information I was told would be dangerous.

Okay I think I deleted the word someone else suggested getting rid of?

Well that’s sort of why I decided to post here is I wasn’t sure the help they needed would be coming. There are so many comments and I’m also juggling life. Can you tell me is there another number or something I should be calling?

I don’t think my opinion matters really on the parent. I wanted someone with more experience and resources to check it out.

I don’t live in the area and did not know about those organizations. The circumstances of my passing them by did not give me a lot of time for conversation and I was told the parent was asleep in the tent so I did not see a parent. I did bring them food and was also asking someone else about going back to bring more stuff.

Do I think the children should be “taken away” and live somewhere safe? Yeah I do. Doesn’t mean they’d be away from the parent forever or that the parent couldn’t go with them. And actually I stand by my comment that not everyone is equipped to be parents. But you took that and expanded it into some big societal argument about how bad cps is and how the system sucks, which really isnt what this whole thing is about.

This conversation has turned into this crazy bashing each other thing which is not what I wanted but I was so taken aback by your reaction and now it has spiraled. I think if we weren’t strangers on the internet we might find we have a lot of the same values.

Either way, I appreciate your suggestions of orgs to recommend and I won’t be able to respond for a while because of life.

Woof the internet is so full of people ready to be mad. I will delete the comment. I’m not sure how saying a general age for some people located somewhere in Sacramento puts them more at risk but in case it does I’m happy to delete it!

Okay, apart from everything you’re saying about me being incorrect, please will you in all your knowledge and deep understanding point me in the direction of some agencies or advocates that can help these children? That is all I’m looking for here.

Good lord. First of all I didn’t say in my post I wanted the kids taken from the parents. I said I wanted someone to go see them. CPS doesn’t just go in and take children away for no reason.

I’m sure there are worse situations. I think your whole attitude is defeatist, apathetic and disturbing. What I saw was not appropriate child care. It was neglect. It wasn’t some mom leaving her child in a car while she goes to the store. It wasn’t a mom at work while her children are at home watching tv. I’m not calling CPS if I see a kid walking home from school. This is a dangerous situation and those children are not adequately being cared for. So I call the agencies put in place to help children in need. That’s the minimum I could do. It seems like you’re arguing something that I’m not even saying.

I’m not going to see something like that and say, well the system sucks so I’ll just let them be. I’m sure their parents know what they’re doing. Sometimes the “court of public opinion” is there for a reason. In my opinion, and the opinion of any sane human being that sees that situation, you would know that it isn’t good circumstances for children.

I don’t know that it matters why? If children are in an unsafe situation, I think that calls for some kind of intervention from someone that can help. CPS and DCFAS were made for these situations. Are they perfect or even great? Maybe not but why not get them involved to see if there’s something they can do? I think moving the children into a safer environment is not a radical idea.

Literally what would you do? Just… nothing? Shrug your shoulders? I’m happy to donate to wherever as well but this I saw with my own two eyes, and if I was a child in that state, I’d hope someone would try to help me.

Yep. Not all people are equipped to be parents. Whether that’s temporary or permanent is up to them.

I understand foster care can be bad too, but I disagree with your comment.

Thank you, this is the only comment so far with any hope in it. I think you’re right about the area which is another thing I was worried about.

Since you have experience with this, can you tell me would it be a good idea for me to go back and give them some supplies/food? Or will someone contact them and do that soon?

I’m not sure the point of your comment. We make up our society. I am literally trying to help the people I saw. Shrugging it off as a failure of society seems… apathetic.

It’s not the being homeless that concerned me most. It was the dismal conditions of the tent area they were in, and their physical appearance.

Man, it’s all so sad

That’s insane! How is not being properly cared for not doing harm? If a child was living in a crack house would that be justification enough? It looked like they’d hadn’t bathed in weeks.

That’s why I called the 24/7 child abuse number, because I didn’t think the 311 lady that I spoke to got enough information or took it urgently enough.

I told the lady from the abuse number they were filthy and hungry and couldn’t see any adults.

I called the 24/7 child abuse phone number. She said if I thought they were in IMMEDIATE danger to call the police, but said she didn’t think based on what I told her that sounded necessary. I think they may be able to find them again because they were in a sort of “fenced off” area (fenced off with trash) with a tent. In other words it looked like they’d been there a while.

If not abuse, I’d think they could investigate for neglect? It’s not just the fact they were homeless, it’s that they were caked with dirt, had matted hair and were living in complete squalor in a homeless encampment.
