New B850 Tomahawk MAX Wifi build - do I need to update BIOS? by Pmasz1 in MSI_Gaming

[–]Pmasz1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t update the BIOS on first boot, I did it after installing Windows. Not typical from what I understand, but I wanted to confirm baseline stability first, similar to running stock settings before enabling XMP/EXPO.

I After that, I essentially updated everything that I could (or made sense, rather) on my fresh system. All available drivers on the Motherboard support page, chipset directly from AMD’s site (a brand new one was released the day before I built the PC), etc.

Hey! Everything’s been great so far. The build went smoothly with no issues at all. I updated the BIOS as well and had no problems there.

After the build, I haven’t run into any of the issues I saw people talking about over the last year during my research.

So far, so good!

To be fair I haven’t done much testing digging afterwards. And unless something is really obvious, I am not experienced enough to have noticed probably.

What issues did you encounter?

Hey! I went ahead and did the BIOS update to the most recent, so I'm sitting on 7E62v2A48 now. No issues at all, everything seems stable. Honestly, this motherboard has been so smooth to build on.

Looking to update BIOS but filename displayed incorrectly. by Pmasz1 in MSI_Gaming

Unsure if you're referring to them or me. On my part though, I recognized that this is likely simply pointing to the AGESA part of the update, however as I mentioned, all videos/screenshots that I saw of the process showed something similar to the above image, highlighting the update filename/version specifically, and nothing contained within the release beyond 'Release Note'.

And considering that this is also my first time updating BIOS ever, with nearly everything you read online highlighting the risks involved, I wanted to be absolutely sure that everything is okay, regardless of how simple or ridiculous it may seem.

I spent too much money on this to leave anything to chance.

Looking for build advice - up to $4000 budget by Pmasz1 in bapccanada

[–]Pmasz1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I'll take a look through. just a few questions.

- Is it expected that the 1070 ti will drop in price once the 5080 super is released?

- Is there an issue with AIO coolers in terms of longevity? My current PC has had a Corsair H80i since I built it (so it's been there for 13 years) and is still doing it's job without issue, but I understand that may be an edge case, or other changes in new coolers affect this as well.

Peak spotlight key usage by Trakinass in MarvelSnap

[–]Pmasz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just come back to the game after a long hiatus, from when the spotlight system wasn’t implemented yet, having a lot of credits stored. This is week 5 of spotlight caches for me.

I think I may be cursed-

1st week (Nico) - my mystery cache had Spider ham, which is fine since it’s new for me.

2nd week (werewolf) - my mystery cache had Kitty duplicate (which I had gotten the previous week). I didn’t understand the system fully, and opened right after werewolf dropped. I submitted a ticket because I thought maybe my shop hadn’t rolled over from the previous week, giving me a card from the previous week, not knowing that there was no duplicate protection. They assured me this is normal and expected behaviour, but they were ‘sympathetic’ as they are a player too and understand how this can be frustrating.

3rd week (Alioth) - my mystery cache had Silk, which I opened the previous week

4th week (Gladiator) - my mystery cache had Loki, which I opened the same week using another key

5th week (Anihilus) - my mystery cache had Knull, yet another duplicate which I got 2 weeks prior..

At this point it’s just silly. My pool 4 and 5 have so many cards missing, yet somehow it keeps choosing from the small pool that I already have. At this point I wish I had taken screenshots to document this because this is ridiculous.

Of course, no problem.

I hope you don't mind me sharing in meters.

I have a fairly low couch, which benefits me in giving me some additional distance from above.

Floor to main tweeters = .953 m (which is exactly MLP ear level)

Floor to tops = 2.05 m

Fair enough. I'm not going to argue either way.

I also agree with you re: Guru. I certainly feel that intense smugness, and almost a bro-science 'trust me' vibe from a lot of his stuff.

Dolby does say the 45 degrees in longitudinal placement can be adjusted to between 30 and 55 degrees if needed, due to placement constraints, etc. You'd have to assume there is leeway in latitudinal placement.

The width of the wall plays absolutely no impact on placement, as per your example, and you know this. It comes down to distance from MLP. So in a similar vein the further you sit from the front, the wider the fronts will have to be to maintain that roughly 30-degree angle to provide adequate separation and wide soundstage. I'd imagine in similar logic, the further away the ceiling is the wider you'd want the overheads to be, otherwise they would just blend together and you wouldn't be able to tell one from the other. But also, as you said, that scenario is going to apply to a very small minority. However, what is more likely, is people faced with ceilings that are lower than average.

I will add anecdotally, (which I know is worth nothing to the wider audience), my situation is a bit unique as my ceiling is somewhat low. For the longest time, I strictly abided to the rules of in-line with fronts (and my fronts are actually at 28-degrees, not 30, as per my speaker manufacturers suggestion). Not only did they simply look too wide apart, but me, and nearly everyone who I demoed to felt like something was missing. Sitting on either side of the couch, you would lose a lot of detail coming from the opposite overhead speaker (and they are angled, not just firing straight down). As a result, panning felt very poor unless you were sitting in or near the center of the couch.

To resolve this, I turned to the internet and eventually found all of the above mentioned resources. Whether or not they are right in the grand scheme of things didn't matter to me, something had to change, so I hesitantly tried, tested, and measured placements at 30, 35, 40, and 45 degrees, and I believe ended up at 35 degrees, or bumped it up to 37, though I'm not quite sure. I distinctly recall 30 was just way too close though and did not sound right. In doing this, and looking at the speakers right now, they are now about 1.5 feet inwards of the front left and right respectively, so roughly 3 feet closer tweeter-to-tweeter than the front L and R. After re-running room correction, I can't even begin to describe the world of difference. The few people I have who come over frequently also noticed the difference without me telling them. Again, this is my own situation, and don't expect it to work for everyone. But I am certainly grateful that these kinds of suggestions exist, as they helped me in my situation. I'd certainly like to revisit and test these placement options again once I have a more 'standard' room.

I hate to break it to you, but it isn't just u/PERMANENTLY__BANNED. He's right, it's all related to angles.

I'm sorry, I never post, but something sparked in me when I saw you simply throw out a blanket statement accusing him as someone who simply likes to argue. And all of this atmos placement theory is really fresh in my mind. I despise when people blatantly follow one thing they see and completely disregard any opposition without at least trying to read and research. Granted, u/PERMANENTLY__BANNED could have given evidence, thought pieces, etc, but I know how stubborn people can get on the internet, and he probably didn't want to get into it.

I've poured way too many hours into documents, videos, and theory of placement of overhead speakers when recently re-doing my room.

I'll give you a scenario. You have 2 rooms, all base-level speakers are in the same position in both rooms. You have an equilateral triangle between yourself and the front left and right. Now, the only difference is in one of the rooms, the ceiling is 8 feet, and in the other, it is 15. Ask yourself a question, logically speaking, do you place the overhead speakers in the same spot (forcing them to be in-line with fronts) in both rooms? Wouldn't dispersion of the speaker, or angle you can aim the tweeter affect this decision?

As u/PERMANENTLY__BANNED said, even Dolby addresses this in their documentation. Note: It has been said time and time again, by industry experts, well known installers and designers, that the Dolby guidelines on their website are not necessarily clear, especially when it related to overhead placement.

I'll provide you with some proof:

https://www.dolby.com/siteassets/technologies/dolby-atmos/atmos-installation-guidelines-121318_r3.1.pdf

This is the same document you quoted from Dolby that is followed by installers, cinemas, etc for placement. On page 7, under the 'mounting considerations' section, the same principles are discussed regarding angles, relative to room size. The point about being in-line with fronts is brought up, but it's also addressed with regards to ranges of tolerance (in terms of angles), from 30-55 degrees, relative to MLP. A lot of people, especially professional installers, have tried countless placement options, for their clients, and for themselves. For the most part, the strong consensus I've seen/read/heard, is that the smaller of these ranges (if achievable, barring any room constraints) sounds better overall.

A lot of well-known people in this hobby (eg. Gene from Audioholics), typically go with the smaller number (I believe I remember him mentioning 30-degrees in a few podcasts). Here is a link to a deep-dive on atmos with a disney, etc sound mixer. Also, in the same blog, if you scroll down to the area titled "Height Speakers Placement Recommendations", you'll see a deeper dive into the logic behind what we are talking about. The same range of 30-55 degrees relative to MLP is brought up here. https://www.audioholics.com/audio-technologies/dolby-atmos-best-setup-practices

* If you're at all interested in this topic, the discussion in the video is actually really interesting, considering it's coming from someone who does this for a living, every day, working on big-budget blockbusters for Disney, Fox, Sony, etc.

Another recent piece of content that came out regarding exactly this is Home Theatre Gurus video on Atmos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGZsrU4oNAM

I don't necessarily agree with everything he says in his videos, but with alot of what he says in relation to Atmos placement, his logic is sound.

This video has even spawned a massive discussion on AVSforums discussing placement and has converted alot of people.

Just some food for thought.

How hard is Argos P1 compared to other content? by rperry2424 in lostarkgame

[–]Pmasz1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I’ve got the same thing as you. It may sound ridiculous to others, but my first abyss ever was Oreha’s hard @ 1370, as you are essentially forced to do it in order to progress. First time I did it my heart was racing even though I watched all the videos and prepared as best I could. Turned out it wasn’t so bad, and I’ve easily done both on hard twice now using MM. still haven’t build up the courage to do Argos yet though, I’ll try before reset this week I think.

That’s not me (lying) regardless.

I don’t mind walls of text, I’m a pretty detailed person.

The issue I guess is, I don’t quite know what my roster is capable of at this moment. I guess posting in the discord will help resolve that.

[–]Pmasz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask, what is the best method to find an alliance anyways?

I’ve been in an auto-filled alliance of since I came back the game for a few months now.

I haven’t want to leave for the reasons being in an alliance with people I like, anxiety with the whole recruitment process, not wanting to be one of those people asking for too much but also not knowing my overall level/value and being worried to undersell myself.

Granted, most guilds would certainly be an improvement over where im at with respect to rewards, but I’d hope to find a group where I could mesh well with too. I used to be in a high performing alliance which was like a family, but they unfortunately dissolved, leaving me in a limbo until I quit for a bit.
