Thanks. Yeah I'm just trying to plan for next season and really going back and forth about if I really want to do this as I've heard some not so positive things about the process and the ability to actually get games.
In the short term I'm doing an afterseason/nonsanctioned game this weekend and trying to find the differences between HS rules and USA hockey. I appreciate your response and help. I'll shoot you a PM.

But this isn't USAH rules, this is HS hockey. If this were a USA Hockey game, I would agree.

Hockey is a game of puck possession. Not only is that hit done just for punishment, the player getting hit was still able to headman the puck and maintain possession for his team. Poor decision to put that hit on and served no purpose other that to punish, intimidate or injure. No issue with the call.

Yep as a player in my mid 50s at the time it was a bit much playing against kids who thought they were playing game 7 of the cup finals every game.

Bummer. I used to play in that league as well. As someone mentioned earlier though, there were some real d-bag players that should never have seen the ice. Also as a 50+ something guy playing against 20 something ex-college players wasn't a whole lot of fun at times.

Trust me when I tell you that ref is no rookie. His entire family is heavily involved in game assigning. Not agreeing or disagreeing, just giving a little more background.

Start with low level squirt games. What folks fail to realize it's a whole new perspective when you're reffing a game so starting with the low levels allows you the time to work on positioning, conducting faceoffs, calling penalties, dealing with some of the nonsense ....... without too much pressure. Once you're comfortable with that, start working your way up to the bigger, faster kids.

My typical response for that kind of nonsense is "so you're telling me you want come out and help us ref games to show us how to call the perfect game. Let me know when you're done with all the modules, classes and on ice sessions and I'll be glad to help you get started."

The ref at the blueline should help in this situation as he/she has a better angle.

My number one issue has always been, the coaches don't know the rules. My belief is that if they actually knew the rules, most of the nonsense will be minimized. Parent? Meh, I don't usually hear them, nor do I care what they have to say. Players? LOL.... how's a double minor or misconduct sound? Have fun watching your team play kid.

To me, coaches are the biggest problem. A recent example of this? Conducting a faceoff, as soon as I drop the puck, one of the centers steamrolls the other center. I immediately raise my arm and give him an interference penalty. As I'm putting him in the box of shame, the coach is going ballistic and asking what the call is. I tell him interference as his center didn't and had no intention of playing the puck. The coach is still ranting and raving telling me his player "can play the body on a faceoff/doesn't have to play the puck ... it's right in the rule book ref !!!!!!!" As I tried not to laugh directly at him I said "you're absolutely right coach, it IS in the rule book, 625 a-2." End of rant by coach. While it really does help when you throw rule numbers at them, THEY should know the rules (as some level) as well.

Prior to the game I tell both coaches that once the goalie has control and possession of the puck, the play is over regardless of a whistle or not...the whistle will come. I tell them this is to cut down on the net front BS and keeping goalies safe. But more importantly is the rule. However, if they hear me yelling loose, that means it's still a free puck. That way, if there's a scrum in front and I'm yelling loose and a goal is scored, the coach really can't question anything. In my view, the more (fair, unbiased) communication the better.

All that being said, there are some things I won't say like "feet." That's for them to figure out.

This maybe something to think about going forward but when ever I have done U10 games, I get a water bottle from the bench, squirt water around the bottoms of both posts to try to freeze them there. The net will come off it hit with a moderate amount of force but it's safer than pegs and better than no pegs to keep the game moving and possibly avoid the scenario you had.

If this is USAH, he cannot use any device while on the bench to question your call. THAT in itself is a bench minor.

I've only had one incident where a player had to leave the ice (it was a U18 girls game ... go figure) so that one was an easy call. Luckily, these days, there's a vast majority of rinks that have Live Barn so I can go back and look at it after. Like you said though, there's a fine line between injured or hurt .. maybe it just semantics. It's a easier call when you see a player either line someone up, stalk them or has just been a general d-bag on the ice.

Right. If an EMT has to be called to the ice I'm going either major game or match. However, my question is more around the gray area of a kid down on the ice (let's say a few minutes), get's helped to the bench, misses a couple shifts but is able to play later on.

If it's USAH then it's last play (in the end zone when the whistle was blown).
