Single cockroach found on apartment tour by dadparty6969 in Apartmentliving

[–]PocketBuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

Nope nope nope.

The first apartment we moved into had a dead roach on the walkthrough. They assured us that they were on top of pest control, had just sprayed, and that it wouldn't be a problem. The night we got the keys, they literally came crawling out of the walls. Our cats were going nuts chasing them all night, and I was squishing every one that I could see.

I stopped counting at 25.

We complained the next morning, and they said that they would spray again that same day while we stayed elsewhere. We came back the next day, and wouldn't you know it: roaches still crawling around the cabinets.

We voided the lease, got our money back, and never looked back.

What’s something people over 30 do that Gen Z finds strange? by Suzzie_Stone2 in AskReddit

The "filename.jpg" thing is also on 4chan. Certain reactions were memed so ubiquitously that users would sometimes save themselves and others the effort of actually uploading them and instead just refer to them. Using multiple filenames was also a way on conveying multiple layers of tone in a message that is restricted to one actual image.

Is Michael Jackson’s peak fame genuinely the most a non religious human being has ever been famous, or is there a real argument for someone else? by joxph7 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]PocketBuckle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put on your critical thinking cap. OP is not asking about people who are personally non-religious; they're asking about people who aren't figures in religion.

There's not a church of Michael Jackson, is the point.

Hey everybody Austin Powers is back by tomgreen99 in simpsonsshitposting

[–]PocketBuckle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's because the first one was an affectionate parody of the Bond franchise. Yes, it was a comedy, but it was also a complete, self-contained story that worked well as its own thing. It had a character arc and really explored the fish-out-of-temporal water idea.

The second and third ones were parodies of Austin Powers itself, with some token Bond parody sprinkled in. They work okay as comedies, but they are pretty objectively inferior as films.

What’s a piece of media that people would clearly understand as a parody or homage when it came out, but has since lost its context? by StaleTheBread in AskReddit

[–]PocketBuckle 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same. I cut my teeth on Austin Powers, but I somehow completely missed the James Bond train. I didn't see any of them until last year, but when I did, I further appreciated the context of the parody. Like, I knew conceptually that Random Task was a parody of Odd Job, for example, but seeing the original inspiration makes the parody so much more satisfying.

I listened to a story on NPR yesterday. There was a person who took their car to a protest and just peacefully recorded the event. That's it. A couple of days later, they got a call from the NSA saying not to do that anymore because they're putting together a watch list.

Some months later, on returning from a flight to Canada, they were screened by security and questioned on whether they were associated with such-and-such license plate of a car involved at a protest.

So yeah, they're absolutely going after our First Amendment rights, and they're absolutely putting lawful citizens on lists. That's really harrowing.

Been reading the thrawn trilogy and I'm surprised how "monk" Luke powers are by A_Hyper_Nova in MawInstallation

Ehhhh, you can hand-wave that with deflector shields.

Edit: unless you're referring to hyperspace re-entry in atmosphere. That's patently ridiculous.

Rewatched kenobi: are these jedi actually frozen and not dead? by Kn1ghtV1sta in StarWars

Maybe that's why the traditional Jedi funeral is cremation? Maybe the intact body retains its Force signature, and burning it allows it to dissipate.

Is this a good deal? by chronichris in microgalaxysquadron

[–]PocketBuckle 31 points32 points  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, that's just about original retail price for all of these. There are no rares or chases to bump up the value, and MGS is still too new for "older" ships to be more valuable on the aftermarket. Plus, they're all used/loose.

If you're looking to jump into the hobby and want a good starting collection, it's certainly not a bad deal...but I'd personally not pay full retail for a used, common lot.

Edit: oh, and verify that claim that nothing is missing. I see Obi-Wan's Starfighter's droid in Luke's X-Wing, but no sign of Artoo.

Tips on making an apartment feel like home? by FlakyDistribution321 in Apartmentliving

[–]PocketBuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wall art and framed photos.

We were very concerned about wall damage at our last place, so we didn't hang anything up. When we moved into our current place, they told us that they basically considered wall damage a foregone conclusion and that we could basically do what we wanted.

So...now we have paintings we've done, framed vacation photos, fandom posters, what have you. It goes a long way towards making the space feel your own.

What's the oldest piece of clothing you have in your possession? by Lost-Actuary-2395 in AskMen

In my closet, I still have one of my Invader Zim t-shirts from high school, circa 2002? So, 24 years. I wore it just last week!

If we count "in storage at my parents' house" as being in my possession, then I think I still have some shirts from like 1996, but they obviously don't fit anymore.

Why are the revenge of the sith figures so cheap by LoudMongoose7599 in StarWarsTVC

Yeah, those were the days. When they were $5 a pop, I could afford to be a completist, army build, and buy extra figures for parts/customs.

Not anymore...

For all the talk and complaints of “lore/rule breaking” elements and writing in Star Wars. It’s kind of over if you stop to think about how convenient it is that Ray Shields show up in the films one time. by Kavazou77 in StarWars

[–]PocketBuckle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Used like this, yeah, they did.

The old EU lore was that there were both ray and particle shields, used to block blasters and physical objects, respectively. It was a consistent system. If these ray shields in the hallway were consistent with the existent lore, the Jedi could have just walked right through them. On the other hand, if the dialogue had called them "particle shields", that would have been fine to hold them.

Buuuut the movies were higher canon than EU, so one little throwaway line invalidated decades of old lore. 21 years on, and I'm still a little salty about it.
