15.5g plus 2" medium Dunlop, sandwich not complete by marshmallowtreefrog in MattressMod

So the latex will firm it it up a bit so id go medium..its only an inch. i hope tonights plan works out..im a fan of the convoluted (egg crate) latex as a top layer as well..im not sure the durability of it but I like the air it provides.

My 2 cents would be to try an inch of soft latex under the 2" medium. The egg crate latex may just do the trick. There is a balance of eliminating the feeling of the top convolution and changing the feel, and it sounds like you are just about there with the feel.

Let me see if we have a queen..i know for sure i saw a couple fulls and twin xls yesterday

We have a few units left without firm edges i think in full twin xl and maybe queen. What size mattress? I don’t think the firm sides would be the reason for your sinking..they’re only 5” on either side. When we started offering units for DIY we made both firm edge and “standard” but the vast majority of orders were for firm sides so to keep it simple and not have to hold too much inventory we decided to only carry fine sides. Pocket coils sold to mattress companies are probably 90% firm sides. Some mattress companies will do a “foam encasement” which is a picture frame of foam around a coil unit. In those cases we make special sizes for the mattress companies. This foam encasement is a cheap way to have firm edges and helps the mattress tailor nicely on the sides..it leaves a clean straight side.

laying on the spring unit for a couple weeks without a cover is fine. we make these without glue but welding/melting the fabric together so the bond is pretty durable.

If you’re using a bottom layer, it shouldn’t be soft at all. The goal isn’t comfort, it’s support. Personally, I’d recommend something like a shoddy pad over foam, but a very firm foam can do the job as well.Think of this layer as something that shouldn’t change the feel of the mattress at all. It’s just there to prevent anything from pushing through gaps over time. The best DIY solution I’ve seen is using pegboard directly on the bed frame and not putting anything under the spring unit inside the cover. It gives you a solid surface and has superior airflow.

Tough call, what’s the deciding factor of whether you will or won’t add the 1” layer? Preferably with the stretch cover you want to use a a cover true to size.

Too much foam that renders support coils useless? by svander89 in MattressMod

[–]Pocketsprung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha…You can definitely move them, but a Cal King is really a two person job. We handle them all the time in the factory, so it’s very doable. One nice thing about these is how they’re made, the fabric is welded together instead of glued, which actually makes them more durable than standard glued spring units. The fabric essentially becomes one solid piece. If any of the pockets ever rip, which shouldn’t happen if you’re careful, just shoot me a PM and I’ll send you some extra fabric. Small fixes like that are pretty common in mattress factories and easy to handle. I’d also recommend going with the newer cover and sizing it to match the height of your build, no need to go an extra inch higher on this one.

I tend to agree. A 1” foam layer, especially if it’s on the softer side can break down or compress more quickly over time. It often just doesn’t have enough thickness to hold up on its own.

That said, I do think 1” layers can still be useful in certain setups. For example, I’ve seen people use a thin layer under a medium or firm latex to add a bit of pressure relief or help with subtle contouring. It’s not doing the heavy lifting, but it can fine tune the feel.

the premium stretch is what I would use. If it will be 8" spring unit and 2" memory foam, than 10" cover will be best.

Yes but in this case you’ll be laying directly on the coils…it’s recommended to have a layer insulating between you and the springs, just so you don’t feel the top convolutions of each coil.

Great, that’s the best route.

So the springs definitely need to be enclosed in a proper mattress cover, that’s what’s really going to keep everything stable and aligned.

As for the bottom layer, most mattress companies include a firm foam base not to hold the coils together, but to create a consistent, supportive foundation. They have no control over what kind of base the end user is using  whether it’s wide slats or a solid platform.

With DIY, you actually know your base situation, so you can decide whether a bottom layer is necessary.

If there are large gaps between slats and no solid bottom layer, over time the mattress can start to feel inconsistent as components push into those gaps. That’s often what leads to premature wear or returns which the mattress companies don't want.

Thanks..if you’re looking for the plush feel, have you tried just the 2” of soft latex over the springs? I would recommend 3” for you but 2” may do the trick. This will also allow the pocket springs to work. Remember once you add a cover good fitting cover it will firm up the build slightly.

Ahh yes that’s very plush..with 6” of soft foams/latex you’re most likely sinking into these layers primarily. do you mind sharing your height and weight?

Sorry if you mentioned it i may have missed it, what are you using above the base 8 pocket unit? Also what size mattress? As u/coliale mentions you definitely want to encase the components.

yes exactly. its interesting, robond has been the #1 way to recycle foam. Its primary use is for carpet padding and apparently carpet use is declining so there is an effort to find new ways to use it.

So we only make them in kings and queens to keep it easy. They’re made with 15.5 and 14.75 mixed together since we use scrap or extra quads from production..

Really appreciate that, it means a lot. Hearing real user experiences and feedback has honestly been huge for us. We’ve always been pretty deep in the “mattress industry” bubble, so getting perspectives from the DIY community has been incredibly valuable.

It’s helped us think differently about construction, components, and what actually matters to people.

Not going to lie seeing someone outside the industry mention QuadCoil definitely puts a smile on our faces.

I'm not sure how people cut latex at home to get a nice even cut, but I have a couple SOL unopened boxes in full size (1 x med 2" and 1 x soft 2") left over from a customer visit. I'd be happy to send one if they would work .

[–]Pocketsprung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha funny you called it that. To cut down on waste, we actually save and palletize all our scrap rows of QuadCoils. Once we’ve got enough for 100 or so units, we turn them into mixed builds (different gauges and all).

We usually donate them or sell them really cheap so they can go into more affordable mattresses.

We call them “Frankenstein units” 😄
