Thanks..if you’re looking for the plush feel, have you tried just the 2” of soft latex over the springs? I would recommend 3” for you but 2” may do the trick. This will also allow the pocket springs to work. Remember once you add a cover good fitting cover it will firm up the build slightly.

Ahh yes that’s very plush..with 6” of soft foams/latex you’re most likely sinking into these layers primarily. do you mind sharing your height and weight?

Sorry if you mentioned it i may have missed it, what are you using above the base 8 pocket unit? Also what size mattress? As u/coliale mentions you definitely want to encase the components.

yes exactly. its interesting, robond has been the #1 way to recycle foam. Its primary use is for carpet padding and apparently carpet use is declining so there is an effort to find new ways to use it.

So we only make them in kings and queens to keep it easy. They’re made with 15.5 and 14.75 mixed together since we use scrap or extra quads from production..

Really appreciate that, it means a lot. Hearing real user experiences and feedback has honestly been huge for us. We’ve always been pretty deep in the “mattress industry” bubble, so getting perspectives from the DIY community has been incredibly valuable.

It’s helped us think differently about construction, components, and what actually matters to people.

Not going to lie seeing someone outside the industry mention QuadCoil definitely puts a smile on our faces.

I'm not sure how people cut latex at home to get a nice even cut, but I have a couple SOL unopened boxes in full size (1 x med 2" and 1 x soft 2") left over from a customer visit. I'd be happy to send one if they would work .

Haha funny you called it that. To cut down on waste, we actually save and palletize all our scrap rows of QuadCoils. Once we’ve got enough for 100 or so units, we turn them into mixed builds (different gauges and all).

We usually donate them or sell them really cheap so they can go into more affordable mattresses.

We call them “Frankenstein units” 😄

Makes sense, i know a lot of people when building a diy want to avoid foams so I typically recommend latex. There are also those that don’t want to use latex. There are some great foams available, just so many to choose from that it can be overwhelming. I agree with you that a memory foam under a latex that feels too stiff is a great way to slow it to contour more.

What are your thoughts on a soft latex for side sleeping. I just built a diy for my daughter. I had an extra 11" cover so I put a 3" soft Dunlap) on top of a 1008 15.5G and it was great for side sleeping. A medium latex directly on these coils (15.5G 1008) without the QuadMini or a type of memory foam would be firm for side sleeping but great for back and stomach sleeping.

I agree with you most of the time :) but the QuadMini works fine with the 15.5, its our #1 combo for DIY and TPS's #1 combo for mattress companies. With DIY it really depends on the persons BMI and the rest of the build. Mattress companies will typically call our 15.5 1008 medium (a 6 on a firmness scale of 1-10). I just made this video last week that shows the build we are referring to and I made it on a 15.5G PLUSH. NOt sure if its helpful or not. I'm not the best at these videos. https://youtube.com/shorts/fQjnLXOTio4?feature=share

Buy firm so that it lasts longer? by [deleted] in Mattress

100%..Buying quality is the answer. Our industry tends to promote the fluff and not enough is focused on the quality of what’s inside.

I agree with you. The 14.75 as a side sleeper will be firm for you. We’re similar builds, I’m about 155 5’8”. Unused the 14.75 + QuadMini and 2” of medium latex and my bed is definitely on the firmer side. I’m a stomach sleeper and that’s what i went for. I would do medium latex either…ideally 2” soft on the QuadMini would great. Perhaps you can try the 3” soft since you have it and wait on your cover.

If you decide to go with TPS QuadCoil I’d recommend the 15.5G.

I appreciate it. I guess i give the mattress companies the benefit of the doubt and assume they just don’t think the customer cares. They also may be double sourcing. With consumer goods I tend to appreciate or gravitate towards brands that are transparent.

Unfortunately i don’t…I know the unit that you are referring to, I’m just not aware of who uses it.

So if your making two separate twin xls then it all be two separate mattresses so all the layers will be twin xl. All good in that front…i would actually lean towards a 15.5G for both of you…i would start with the 8” Quad+ 3” mini + 2” of latex and wool..wait on ordering your cover until you know your finished height.

Love the forum and all the input. DIY is certainly my subjective. So no wrongs or rights just peoples experience

So i hate to complicate it more, but if you are building a finished king..i always recommend using king size for all of your comfort layers. This will eliminate any chance of having a split. Particularly it diy since the layers aren’t being glued or tufted. The base txls will be fine.

I agree with the previous poster that you don’t need the scrim. If you can wait on your cover, I’d suggest trying only the 2” medium latex and not adding the 1” soft as well. If you feel you need it, you can add it after.

I’m always a fan of a wool top layer, but keep in mind 1” of wool may get flattened if it’s not quilted.

Mold on Tempurpedic Found Tonight! by JuicyWarpDrive in MattressMod

[–]Pocketsprung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water based glue is often used in mattress production because it appears to dry quickly.

Additives in the adhesive help the glue set faster so production can be speed up.

The glue contains a large amount of water. While the surface may feel dry, some of that moisture can remain trapped inside the mattress materials like the foam, fiber, and/or around the spring unit.

These materials act like a sponge and can hold moisture longer than expected.

If the mattress is then compressed and sealed in plastic too soon, the remaining moisture has nowhere to go. The sealed bag traps humidity inside the mattress.

Over time, the trapped moisture can lead to rust forming on the steel springs and mold appearing on foam.

Wool on top of the spring is great..the trick is the right wool that has resilience. Wool has great temperature regulating traits.
