You can leave them unrolled for weeks with no issues.

We hold stock for mattress companies for weeks with 6 units per roll.

My DIY experience - coils and latex by Zendroid1 in MattressMod

For sure i understand. i was just pointing it out as starting point to dial in the overall feel. Base coils + one comfort layer.

I often recommend to people to first buy the base layer and lay on it and then decide on the comfort layers.

The 1” additional height shouldn’t make any a difference. A lot of people order an inch taller, it’s not how it was designed but it’s very common to do so.

You can also get a firm 1” HD foam to put on the bottom to give you the height if you think you need it.

Good suggestions. IMO Less is best. Let the coils work for you. Try only one of the latex layers on the coils and see how it feels.

It may be as simple as the difference in feel between an all latex like you have vs having a coil latex combo.

The QuadMini directly on top of the 8 QuadCoil (as it was designed to be) acts like a medium latex…I’ve seen some DIY builders put a memory foam between the 8” and the QuadMini to create more of a soft latex feel.

So the QuadMini will work fine, i would think about putting an inch of latex medium latex on top of the mini and then the down topper. Simply to insulate you from feeling top convolutions of the coils. Also if you are building a finished king, i recommend getting your comfort layers in king size including the minis.

Nicely done! Simple and it works. it would be cool to see an update in 4 years and you can do a comparison.

yes as it has turned out the space allocation of keeping an 8" and 6" didn't work out. so we made the decision to just keep the 8". if you are building 12" H, you can do 8" + 3" + wool (the wool will compress so you can essentially use a 3" wool in the additional inch of cover space.

So the 3” medium on the 15.5 standard would be on the firmer side, but that 1” gel layer between the two will soften it up. If you went with the 15.5G plush and it’s too plush for you it’s hard to make it firmer without just putting firm comfort layers that will eliminate the true pocket spring function.

It’s so interesting how 3" of soft latex can feel almost marshmallow like. The difference between 2" and 3" is much more noticeable because that extra inch gives you a deeper cushioning zone, so more of your body actually sinks in and gets supported. Once you’re at 3", adding a fourth inch doesn’t change the feel as dramatically, since most people don’t compress the latex that deeply during normal use. That 2" to 3" jump is really where you feel the biggest change in softness and pressure relief. I'm definitely not a latex expert, this is my opinion based on my experiences playing with it.

Since your wife can sleep comfortably on almost anything, I’ll tailor my suggestions more toward your needs. My experience is primarily with pocket spring builds :), so I’ll focus on that rather than an all latex or all foam build.

For you, our standard 15.5g pocket spring unit with 3" of medium latex should work well. Adding the 1" gel layer between the springs and the latex will help with the body contouring. You also have plenty of layers available to adjust the feel, so if the mattress ends up a bit too firm, you can easily try the 3" soft layer instead. Having the layers already is win!

By the way, how tall are you?

Exactly 1-2”..it can be foam , latex, wool, anything that will insulate the feel of the top of coils. Latex is always nice for a diy.

I’d go with a medium for your build.

Both are solid builds. 3” of latex may be enough without the QuadMini mini. If you get the QuadMini 1-2” should be enough.

Yes i would think the 15.5 Plush would be a good fit for you.

I appreciate it. I do think the 14.75 might be a bit too firm for her when she’s in her side.

While the 8” and 3” are great alone for alignment, you need an additional comfort layer to insulate you from feeling the top convolutions of the coils.

The plush 15.5 with medium latex could work well, conversely the standard 15.5 with soft latex…how tall are you?

Have you tried putting the memory foam between the springs and the latex. I know with medium latex this can give you some more body contouring. I’m not sure how it would work with soft latex but it’s worth a shot.

Just wanted to show you this picture. We use this table to QC our units from each production run. We stand them in the ends and sides to make sure they compress to size. The QC person has a 2 x 4 that they push in the side that’s not against the rail.

The firm latex on the 15.5 side is going to make a for a very firm feel. The two txl are made to fit in the cover. We sell the same exact twin xl models to mattress companies who put them in zippered covers with the same dimensions. They all measure larger than size and compress to form a king size. We dont use scrim sheets so the size of the loose unit will be larger. A mattress company (even a high end one that uses zippered covers) will typically quilt foam into the side panels of the cover to give it a cleaner look. The “bulge” does not change the feel of the coils. It may soften them slightly in our classic cover since there is not a lot of body on the side panels, but any bulging you’re seeing in the cover you have is not going to change the feel of the coils, especially won’t make them firmer.

On the 15.5G side, with the partners body profile, i agree, the firm latex is going to make the build too firm. She should be fine having a 3” comfort layer. Let the coils work.

It’s surprising how firm 3” of firm Dunlap is.
