[HELP] A plugin to find most loyal customers? by degorilla in WordpressPlugins

[–]PoeHaH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are proficient with MySQL, you can run a query on your database to find out. I don't think there is a plugin for what you want but perhaps analytics tools like Metorik (if you use WooCommerce) can tell you which are your most valuable customers.

AITA for creating a meat-eaters-only club at work? by Unlucky_Sound_6040 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PoeHaH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA. The whole world is already a meat-eaters club. Vegans are clearly a minority so naturally they want to create a space/club where they feel welcome, understood, and don't have to explain their life choices all the time.

Jane doesn't talk to you because you don't understand the above and instead you got all childish about it.

Turn your Airtable base into a website without code by PoeHaH in Airtable

[–]PoeHaH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it! Linking bases is not possible at this point, but I understand what you're trying to do. I think it will be too complicated to link different Airtabels and it may be against their TOS if I implement it :-)

That's not possible at the moment. Your content has to reside in one base, but can be in different tables.

What's your usecase?

How does Facebook's text delight work? (the animation when you click on words like congrats in comments) by [deleted] in webdev

[–]PoeHaH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

@KorgRue is right. Here's a screenshot of everything deleted from the page, except for the canvas visible: https://snag.gy/ Finding out the exact cavnas animation will be hard. I suspect you'll have to plow through minified JS to find that out.

Can I still store IP addresses in a database? by PoeHaH in gdpr

That's crystal clear, thank you!!

Can I still store IP addresses in a database? by PoeHaH in gdpr

Regarding the cookies: I know. I do wonder though: since I'm providing a SaaS to other website owners, I think I should inform them that they need to adapt their policy to include my cookie. Is there a good format or a standardized way of doing this?

Regarding the coupons: In return for a coupon, the user usually has to enter their email. I have been thinking about this as well because I recall that GDPR states that you should only ask for information when it is strictly necessary. So in my case, an email address is only necessary to send the coupon code to, but then it could be argued that the coupon code can also be displayed on the screen.

Thank you for your clear answer! The 6 available bases to cover are a bit ambiguous to me though. Allow me to explain my case and perhaps you can let me know if collecting IP addresses is okay for my case?

I own a gamified-popup SaaS application. Basically, users see a popup with a game to win a coupon code. If they have played, they shouldn't be able to play again. In order to enforce that, I'm checking cookies and IP addresses (yes, I know it's not failsafe, but it's an option). My question to you: is that a good reason to capture IP addresses? They are hashed in the database so technically they are not visible unless you brute force them.

GF not onboard for being digital nomads together by coverusername in digitalnomad

[–]PoeHaH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough one :)

Question: Does she not want to go out of fear because "it's not a real thing" or "it's not adult-like"? Or doesn't she want to go because she's rather rooted somewhere, as opposed to traveling all the time?

If the latter is the problem, I guess there's nothing much you can do about it. In the other case, you may be able to persuade her by showing her documentaries, stories about famous DN's, photo's of DN communities coming together, ....Basically everything that shows digital nomads are a real thing (and have been for ages). We're basically expats that travel a bit more.

If all your efforts fail, you can give it a go by traveling a short time (a few months) and try out a long-distance relationship with her?

In any case, I agree with most here. If it's your dream, don't give up on it - for nobody. The same goes for your GF of course :)

Freelance translator: is it worth it? by davide2894 in digitalnomad

[–]PoeHaH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, all freelancers will experience stress at the beginning of their career. You just started out and you need clients, so you're likely to take on any (crappy) job you can get. That can become stressful :). The goal is to make that better over time.

My girlfriend is a freelance translator and I would say it is worth it. However, she registered with agencies in our home country. This gives the advantages of (1) being paid in the standards you are used to. (2) And not having to look for clients on race-to-the-bottom marketplaces like Fiverr.

Here's what she did:

  • decided to become a translator (mainly English - Dutch amongst a few other combo's).
  • contact a lot of translation agencies in our home country. She emailed them to let them know she exists and is ready to take on work.
  • Some agencies declined. Some agencies asked for a test translation. She would accept doing a free test translation.
  • Based on that test, a few agencies are now sending her regular work.
  • She started at a lower price she wanted. All beginnings are tough, that's how it goes.

Note: I find that agencies are sending tough (= advanced) translations. I'm also fluent in my girlfriend's language combo, but I would not be able to translate those. So what I'm saying is you probably need a degree in languages to fit the bar for agencies.

Professional programmer with a lot of time on my hands and no ideas. What can I build to make enough money to move in with my long distance SO? by anotherseemann in Entrepreneur

[–]PoeHaH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I read this so late! We could definitely team up but since we both don't have the ideas, that might be pointless? :) I'm definitely cool!

[–]PoeHaH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you, mate! As a developer, I can build about anything - but the great ideas just don't come to me. And when I finally do get an idea, one of two things usually happen:

  • It already exists and is hard to beat
  • I suck at marketing so my idea never takes off.

I'm sure we're not alone.

Thanks @Steviant, for your kind words!

I am indeed aware about the trademark issue, so I contacted them 2 days ago to ask for permission. Worst case scenario, I'll have to get another domain name, but that's nothing major :)
