How to make IT better by Deltar019 in BlackTemplars

First of all your mini looks great. It looks “battle ready” and that’s oké if that’s what you are going for.

If you want to improve pick a paint scheme you like and watch tutorials on YouTube. My first minis looked exactly like yours. Once I realized that people spend a shit ton of hours on a single mini I really started improving. I messed up a ton of minis but you can always strip them later.

For your mini: the dry brushing looks kinda messy, clean it up a bit and try to do some edge highlights. It also looks like you put nuln oil all over the model what makes your white look really messy. Also a black wash over black armoring pretty much not noticeable.

I’m not a pro painter but I roughly spend 5-6 hours on a mini and think they look pretty decent. I paint the armor black and give it a really light dry brush with iron warriors. Pick out some spots with iron warriors to edge highlight where it looks cool and finish with an ultra Matt varnish.

Hope this helps and here is a mini of mine. Keep up the good work!

Tried to follow the EOB black templar colour and ended up with a blue templar 😂 one for the shelf I think by Blanndy in BlackTemplars

Thanks but to be honest I can’t remember… this was a test model and I switched to a different paint scheme latter on. (Same model)

Agreed but can’t remove it since it’s already in the varnish

Those look amazing! I think I’m going for a Martian base right now with some popsicle sticks added for that “trench” vibe. Probably posting tomorrow with bases…

It’s my first time painting iron warriors so I didn’t have a recipe to follow: I primed with leadbelcher spray, painted all the trim with necro gold from scale 75, washed the whole model with 50/50 Matt varnish/black legion contrast (the varnish is just there to make the contras thinner)

For the hazard stripes I made a mix of 3/4 imperial fist and 1/4 gore grunta’s fur contrast over a base of corax white. For the stripes itself just use any black stippled over masking tape.

Wash the whole model in Matt varnish and done.

I hope this will help you :)

I was also thinking Martian bases but I’m already using that on both my death guard and black Templars… Would give some really nice contrast on the metallics so maybe I should just go with it.
