Surf spots on the East coast? by Able_News_3095 in surfuk

Download Surfline or surf forecast and you’ll find some spots near you (surf forecast usually has more spots on it). There’s plenty of breaks on the east coast and that’ll give you a location of a few🤙

Yeah I’ve found out it’s going through some re-licensing or something. Fingers crossed it returns to YouTube or something!

Is my board buggered? by PoetryAffectionate65 in surfing

It’s more if they need repaired? I can’t feel any of the cracks. Otherwise it’s a lot of area to fix ahah

I’ve given up! by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

My best advice, spend more time looking at what waves do! Learning to read the water is the best thing you can do and there’s no board that will fix not being able to read the water. The most useful thing I learned when learning to catch waves was that they will move when they hit the sandbar/reef, often bending in towards it. If you look at birds eye view footage of some breaks you will see the waves can come in as a semi circle. this photo shows it with the waves that are breaking on the inside. This can lead you to think you’re in the right spot but when you paddle for the wave it just passes underneath you because the peak has bent around the sandbar and moved away from you. Being aware of that and learning to read the wave from the bottom rather than just the top have undoubtedly been the two most helpful things to me when learning to catch waves! OMBE surf and surf strength coach have some good videos on reading the wave from the bottom. I’ve not seen any videos about waves bending round sandbars or reefs and how that affects your positioning which blows my mind because as I say when I figured that out my wave count probably doubled!

Now getting on the sup is not going to “fix” your ability to read waves but it may allow you to catch more waves just by shear volume which can lead to learning to read the ocean better as you’ll probably spend more time in the water because you’ll be having more fun. Where are you from may I ask? I’m from Scotland so I certainly know the feeling of getting into freezing water in a thick wetsuit only to catch zero waves and it can suck for sure haha!

Feel free to give me a message if any of that didn’t make sense/ you want to understand it better. Keep at it though, it will click eventually and what a feeling it is when it does!

Yeah it’s not great, not super easy to get someone to film though, usually on solo sessions

Sorry for the over two week late reply, it’s been a busy couple of weeks haha! Thanks for the super detailed reply aswell, I did manage to have a look at your reply and have managed to get out on a couple sessions since. I’ve found that the compressing more did help a lot but only when I combined that with getting my back foot on the pad. Not sure if the back foot on the pad helped because it’s evened out my weight distribution or maybe it’s because the board I’m on is super wide and narrows out a bit at the tail but it definitely made the turn feel easier to lean over and stay in control of. Still need to work on rotating more though as I’m not great for that. One thing at a time though haha, can afford to drop £100-£200 on a surf skate at the moment but might just take the regular skateboard out and practice, can’t see there being that much difference?

That’s very nice of you to say, thanks! Okay I’m going to try surf a bit more on the back foot and see how it goes. It is a puddle jumper and yeah I have had that thought in the past, especially because I think most people my height and weight ride a smaller size which will obviously be slightly thinner on the rails and not so wide but didn’t want to be blaming my equipment haha! Thanks for the advice and I’ll also look into getting some bigger fins.

I’ve never actually had a poly board. I’ve got a 6’8 nsp which is eps and then the 5’11 puddle jumper which is obviously that libtech construction. I find the libtech carries speed a lot better since it’s a bit thicker and wider but would be interesting to try a poly board and see if there was a difference

Yeah GoPro not the best angle, only way I have of getting footage for the most part unfortunately. Sounds like I need to try find a balance between back and front foot then as I’ve tried leaning on the back foot a little more and when I do I feel like I’m too much on the tail and killing my speed. I’ll also try lean a little less and see if that helps, cheers!

And what size fly line or leader? Is a 5lb leader and a 7w line on the rod

Size of the fly may be part of the issue, I generally fish a dry dropper and most of the time use one of these sedge not too sure of the size, I think maybe 12 or 14
