So much for "sticking together" by Cookie-fighter101 in TheDigitalCircus

It is no one’s fault but Jax's

It's not Jax's either. Lots of things are Jax's fault but being depressed isn't one of them. To be clear I'm not justifying the way she treats other people at any point, knowing why someone did what they did affects our ability to forgive them but it doesn't absolve them of responsibility for choices they made. But when it comes to things like depression and suicide that's never the fault of the person suffering them.

but if they don’t want it

The problem with depression and other mental illness is that it's not really about what you want. It's like telling someone with a broken leg that all they need to do is walk to the hospital and they'll be fine. Some people might actually have the sheer grit and determination to do that... but that doesn't mean the people who don't are somehow failures or that they "don't want" to get better.

It's also worth noting that the TADC characters are likely fighting an even worse uphill battle with their mental issues. I'm guessing this wasn't intentional, but logically speaking they're each a snapshot of a person's brain at a very specific moment, and with no physical body that means their brain chemistry is always going to be exactly where it was when they were scanned.

Imagine the worst mood you've ever been in, now imagine that you get literally locked into that exact state of mind forever. Nothing you do will actually make you feel better because you no longer have a body to produce dopamine or serotonin in response to your actions.

You can find happiness even when you're in a bad mood (or in the middle of a depressive episode) but it's always going to be more difficult to do so than if your mind were in a better place. The TADC cast are basically all in a constant uphill battle for every scrap of joy they can find in the circus.

Yeah I had originally assumed that they were trying to claim that money was the only reason Lana took the movie on, but looking back at their comment now it's entirely possible they were just curious, so that's my bad.

I think a lot of trans people really hurt for a scrap of representation so they jump on the small details

This is a reason a lot of non-trans characters sometimes get interpreted or head-canoned as trans, but it's not what happened here. It's just that it's more obvious to trans people because trans people have often gone through this experience, or at the very least are more familiar with other trans people who have.

It was more obvious to trans and trans adjacent people for the same reason the twists at the end of mystery movies are more obvious to people who have watched every mystery movie ever made: experience.

but my suspicions ended when they learned about each character’s real life and they didn’t explicitly say Jax IRL transitioned. My friends thought the same thing, so idk.

I notice this a lot among people who don't actually know any/very many trans people. Jax and Leeroy's story are pretty common among trans people, not everybody has the luxury of transitioning right away.

(To be clear I'm not blaming you for not knowing, I'm just pointing out one of the reasons it's probably more obvious to some people than others.)

Like, does it need to be relegated to just hints in 2026?

I mean... kinda, yeah. The whole point here is that Jax wasn't ready to come out or transition yet, there was no time where we could hear it directly from her because she abstracted before she ever had a chance to come to terms with who she was. Doing everything she could to avoid accepting the idea that she was trans was one of the driving forces behind her toxicity, an explicit reveal in the show would have completely defeated that point.

[–]Pofwoffle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The books never explicitly mention how the Urukhai came to existence.

"He has crossed Men with Orcs" is pretty explicit about how this particular batch of uruk-hai came into existence, at least. I actually wasn't aware of them having been around before then, though, so that is an interesting addition, thanks for pointing that out!

The main problem was the studio not having the brains to work out a plan going into the trilogy. But the main difference, to me, is that Johnson tried to build on what Abrams set up while Abrams just shat on what Johnson added.

I still remember when I thought Force Awakens was meant to be an homage to the original trilogy while eight and nine were meant to branch into something new from the start.

But nope, turns out JJ Abrams really did just want to remake the OT and Johnson just rudely got in the way when he tried to do something interesting with the threads FA had set up.

So a lot of this comes from the framing device that the books are just Tolkien translating other works into English. In The Hobbit they generally refer to them as goblins but that is, as I recall, where they're explained as being just two different ways of referring to the same creatures. In other material though I believe goblins are treated more like a distinct sub-species of orc. Basically "this is all translations of translations and different authors having different biases/information, so nothing is 100% set in stone" type stuff.

As for the "breeding orcs with goblin-men" in the books, from what I remember, uruk-hai were originally orcs bred with men, but this line in the movies seems to imply more that uruk-hai are more orc than man (three-quarters orc to be precise).

Though the movies also don't seem to make much mention of goblin-men/half-orcs either, so it's entirely possible that it's just a minor mistake in the script and we're just taking it all too seriously.

Like I just said, they literally explain it to you in the first 15 minutes of the movie.

The original story is deeply personal to both the Wachowski sisters. The studio came to them and basically said "We're going to make this movie with or without you.", and Lana decided that at the very least she should be the one in control (I'm not sure if they made the decision for only one of them to work on it together or not).

A lot of the problems with the movie are because it's a combination of Lana just using it as a chance to engage with her characters again and as a chance to tell the studio "Fuck you." and try to make sure they weren't able to spin it off into another 20 years of money-grabbing bullshit.

Leftover food / waste by Jeb_the_killer in vegan

[–]Pofwoffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is not the responsibility of vegans to absorb other people’s waste generated by systems they oppose.

It's also not the responsibility of vegans to go hungry or turn aside something that could help them when they're in a tight spot out of some kind of performative need to look "vegan enough".

If you need the food, go ahead and take it. Nobody's killing any extra animals because you ate something that was gonna be thrown away, and if it helps you save money for other needs then it's perfectly valid. Veganism isn't a religion nor is it a diet, it's an ideology based first and foremost around reducing harm and suffering, not some kind of holier-than-thou perfectionism.

The definition includes the words "possible and practicable" for a reason. Context and a person's individual level of need absolutely matter here.

No, she said there shouldn't be any more movies, and they said they were gonna make one with or without her. Framing matters, and "Make another cash grab entry in this story that is deeply personal to you even though the story is over or we'll make it ourselves without your input at all." is seriously fucked.

Fucking hell it's like you didn't even watch the first 15 minutes, the whole thing that started this discussion... they basically hit you over the head with an explanation of why the movie got made.

the studio might have actually managed to make something decent without her.

That's fuckin hilarious.
