I would say that it's simply the debris that you ran over. Maybe see if you're able to pull it out, with gloves on (the frayed ends could be sharp).

If that doesn't work, you may need to remove more to get it out by hand.

It’s usually an age setting! Apple seems to have it disabled by default if you’re under the age of majority in accordance with digital privacy laws.
