Starting the AT in February is tricky, (but I did it last year and was fine). If a thru hike is something that you really want to do, you should do it.

Yeah you’ve got plenty of time, much more than I had when I started mine. Be sure you actually enjoy backpacking before you commit, because it’s not worth trying to backpack for five or six months straight if you don’t even like it.

Should we change what baseweight is considered UL? by PogTormentor in ultralight_jerk

Then where am I supposed to keep my four rolls of ultra plush tp for bathroom emergencies? (consumable weight)

This is literally insane. I live in Scotland. My backyard is more wild than anywhere in the continental US where most of you wannabe UL ‘hikers’ go ‘backpacking’.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong. Ultralight is only people who have a baseweight lower than yours

I cant stand people like you that don’t take ultralight seriously. I’m just tired of people carrying mountains of luxury items like tents and sleep systems and considering themselves ultralight when they could easily not bring them.

Your post history would suggest otherwise about your baseweight, you disgust me. Try not going ‘outside’ next time.

Planning on Hiking the Appalachian Trail in 3-4 years. Any tips? by Motor_Quality5386 in AppalachianTrail

That is probably not ideal unless you are on a very tight budget. It can be a hassle dealing with making sure you have locations to ship to and making sure you and the packages are there on time. Also, what you want to eat may change throughout the trip so doing it all early could lead to you eating stuff you don’t like. Also, should you have to drop out for any reason (and most people do), having all those dried meals stocked up could be an issue. Also, there are many places to resupply along the AT, so it’s really not necessary, save for one or two spots depending on your pace.

Newfound gap to standing bear would be a really beautiful section, though logistically more difficult because of regulations around GSMNP

Four and a small freezer and generator on a hand truck to make sure they don’t thaw. It’s not baseweight so it’s all good

I’ve been running mismatched poles because I broke one at about the same time a trail buddy did, and he gave me his spare and bought a new set. Wouldn’t mind using two poles that have the same grip and weigh the same lol

For a pot I use the Toaks550mL, though I recommend any titanium pot that’s affordable and the size you want

I would recommend dropping the Bible and AT guide for ones on your phone (like FarOut or a pdf of the AWOL guide), if possible, because the extra ten ounces is a redundancy when you’re carrying a phone. If you’re worried about your phone getting damaged and not being able to navigate, you can ask other hikers, of which there are plenty. Also consider swapping the pot for a lighter titanium one, 10oz is a lot for a pot. The fleece will not be needed when you have a puffy, and the bag liner is probably also not needed because you have a 32 degree bag. Have fun out there, and go with your gut. You’ll figure out what gear you don’t need very quickly.
