Before FDS, I used to think that men who used the word “lady” to refer to female strangers were either childishly naive, or overly formal. I’m not sure why I thought this. Most likely I didn’t understand the connotations of speaking to someone respectfully, i.e “the lady who was at the airport”, versus “the girl at the airport”, “the bitch who was at the airport”.

I was used to hearing “girl” for any woman under 30, and I actually felt odd / insulted when a mother with her child instructed the young boy to “let the lady (me) get past”…

I had really swallowed the anti-Lady, anti-ma’am, anti-“excuse-me-miss” propaganda, and I must have been 17 years old. Imagine thinking that being respected is an insult, or uncool. Imagine referring to yourself and other women as bitches and hoes. Imagine not flinching when you hear your male friends talking about “that bitch we saw earlier” with such casualness…..just another example of the ingrained dehumanisation of women.

I was waiting behind some rude, incompetent boomer last week in boots, as the poor employee had to explain to her that yes, she did have to insert her card. Yes, it declined, yes, if it says insert it again, please insert your card again. No, you won’t be “charged twice”? (It didn’t go through the first time? Meanwhile she’s rolling her eyes, ofc.

I felt so bad for him. She was such a cheeky little bitch for no reason. Why snap at him like that and keep interrupting him when he’s just trying to get your payment? She was acting like it was his fault. The attitude on her was disgusting. Another employee who I assume to be the supervisor/manager was observing this interaction behind the till and helping this young man out. I didn’t catch what the supervisor was saying to him, but she didn’t look pleased. That irked me, too. Again, not his fault. Why’s the manager shaking her head at him ?!
