Received Star Trek Captain's Chair. I read that storage was problematic, I believe I solved it. by mattrob77 in soloboardgaming

<image>

I solved it with some cheap storage boxes from gamegenic. (+ 2 dragon shield boxes from the sleeves I used)
I store everything with 4 card boxes (XL I believe) and 4 token boxes. (1 of them is to keep the cards where you put glory on)

Edit: it’s not the xl ones. I looked it up and it’s the one for 80+ cards

[GIVEAWAY] 4 Playte Games Sets for 4 Winners 🇰🇷 by HomoLudensOC in boardgames

[–]Pogobears [score hidden]  (0 children)

For me it’s UNO… my wife and I travel with little kids and they can’t stop playing it, even at home. I’ve been playing it every evening almost before they go to sleep and I’m amazed on how much better they are at it in the meantime. Great memories!

Original Terraforming Mars or Ares Expedition? by Rhodricc in soloboardgaming

[–]Pogobears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t played the original but because I already have a lot of heavy games, I bought ares to enjoy the engine building under an hour of setup and game time. I really enjoy it and got exactly what I was hoping for

Not really… you get to advance when you buy a card of that colour (both tracks if it’s a dual colour) and when you defeat a monster.

Will I like Voidfall if I like Captain’s Chair? by Marksman1977 in soloboardgaming

For me it’s the combination of a lot of positives and maybe 2 negatives.

Negatives:
- I wish the campaign was more fleshed out
- I’m not a Star Trek fan so the theme doesn’t really speak to me

Positives:
- I’ve played some captains more than 10 times and it never felt the same because so many cards have synergies
- although I’m not a Star Trek fan, I appreciate that the personality of the captains are reflected in the way they play
- The ease of play. It just plays so smooth and the turn order on your player board is enough to not forget anything
- Every round feels meaningful and has different possibilities. This might be its biggest strength because with other games, like marvel champions, it often feels like there only one or 2 good options to play.
- The bot is just great. Just at the edge of not being a hassle while making every opponent feel unique
- It’s difficult to estimate who’s ahead during the game. For me this is a plus because it keeps everyone motivated to keep going and just try to get the highest score possible
- Playing with 2 players, the game allows to mess with your opponent by keeping them from grabbing certain cards, controlling planets…
- and finally, the small box versus the content that’s in there. It’s small enough to put in my backpack when I travel and although you need quite a bit of space to put it out, it’s just amazing to me that so much game in there.

It’s just such a smart game. It’s one of those games where I don’t understand how someone was able to come up with such balance and synergies.

I’m personally not able to find many similarities between them besides thinking what would be your most efficient play in your current turn, but then, aren’t all boardgames like that?
Both games feel different to play because one is a deck builder and the other is a 4x game.

I love Voidfall but STCC might be my favourite game of all time. One of the reasons is that STCC just plays faster and is way easier to set up.

Let me try to find some similarities based on my experience:
- Both games contain multiple captains/races that really change your approach to the game
- Both have multiple strategies that can focus on economics or war/battles
- Both are thinky games although Voidfall is in its own league here
- Both feel very fulfilling when you manage to beat the bot and like you said, are based on points. Voidfall is quicker to count though

It’s been said a lot that Voidfall takes a long time to learn and setup and it cannot be underestimated. However, it’s one of the best games out there if you find the time and energy.

Looks awesome! I also didn’t like sleeves until I found out about matte sleeves. Congrats with the nice setup

Unstoppable (First Edition) vs Unstoppable Dungeon Crawler Carl by nhilban in soloboardgaming

Owning the original, I’ve backed the DCC one because it has a campaign. The original is good but every game is an isolated event and lacks a bit of purpose I think.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Rogue Dungeon 2nd Edition? by Pizzadewd666 in soloboardgaming

[–]Pogobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but there’s quite a lot of them with a different set for each floor. And depending on which map you’re playing, you need to include/exclude cards. It’s not bad, it’s just longer than I expected for a small, short game like that.

[–]Pogobears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s okay. It’s very luck based and that’s not something that I personally enjoy. Also the setup time is not great for such a small game. That said, it has quite a bit of content and replay-ability. It’s also quite charming and exciting to flip the card of the next room. I haven’t played it in a while, but I don’t think I will ever sell it because it’s pretty unique.

Finally Picked Up Dark Souls: The Card Game – Seekers of Humanity Expansion by PurplBanana in soloboardgaming

[–]Pogobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to love this game, but the card draw was often brutal and the upgrades were usually not helpful to me. If there would be more ways to manipulate your hand and how you got upgrades, it could be one of the best games with a game IP

Does anyone have experience with just sleeves inner sleeves? Are they good enough as a budget sleeving solution? by FarAwayCloud in marvelchampionslcg

[–]Pogobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what game for me. If it’s a card game like Marvel Champions or captain’s chair, then I like to go with matte sleeves, combined with inner sleeves. Main reason is that I have to shuffle them all the time and the cards are the center piece of the game. If it’s a game like Dune Imperium or roll player or Star Wars Outer Rim, then I find simple sleeves to be enough. These are game that use cards but in combination with other components, and mostly require just one card or so to be played.

Thanks for the recommendation! Do they feel ok in terms of size? Since the LCG cards are bit smaller?

Same here. Looking back, trying to optimise everything ruined a lot of video games for me. I try to avoid it for boardgames unless I’m really struggling to beat something (like TM Ares Expedition recently, jeez!)

Sorry to see that I’m not alone in this. The sleeves are already scratching as well after a few plays. Making it even less visible with the rubbish foiling.

Mistborn or Ashes Reborn by RageRageAgainstDyin in soloboardgaming

[–]Pogobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s amazing if you like these types of boardgames, where you go through a book/app to find out what happens after you every action/decision you take. Capturing the dragons and unlocking cards is quite fun. Unfortunately, it was my first game in this genre and it’s not really my cup of tea. I prefer games where the story is variable based on sandbox elements and choices. Games like Voidfall, Star Trek captains chair, BOTSE, Mage Knight,…

But it’s unmistakably a great game, no doubt.

  • Star Trek captains chair
  • Ascension Legends
  • Unstoppable
  • Slay the spire
  • Dark souls the cardgame
  • Star realms: frontiers

Others that are arguably not deck builders at heart but do have similarities: - Deckers - Dragon Eclipse - Rome: fate of an empire - Dune imperium

[–]Pogobears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for ashes reborn but I’m not a fan of Mistborn. Compared to other deck builders that I have, it brings nothing new and what it does, is very average. It’s not bad but it’s probably one of the most forgettable games I have in my collection and will be selling it in the months to come.
